Dominican students to study in China

The students pose with officials

A stern warning to always remain committed to their studies and not get distracted has been issued to nine Dominican students who will be on their way to pursue higher studies in China.

The warning came from Kelver Darroux, Parliamentary Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, who told the scholars that they should always maintain a high level of discipline.

Darroux who was addressing a ceremony Friday also told students to get ready to face a culture shock.

“China is a beautiful city but you have to remember your mission there. It is to study. There will be distractions, there will be a lot of things who will entice you but you have to remain focused and you have to ensure that at the end of the day you are very productive,” he said.

He encouraged them to maintain a high level of discipline. “You are not only representing yourself, you are representing Dominica as well. You have to set your priorities straight. You have to show interest towards your school work,” he added.

Meantime Education Minister Peter St Jean said government has realized that the main pillar of a country’s development is the education of the people.

“The most important element of our human resource capacity lies in our young people. We articulated very early that it is our vision that by 2015 at least one university graduate per household in Dominica. We are well on our way to achieving this goal,” he said.

Ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China Wang Zonglai told the students to make good use of their time in China.

“Keep working hard and never give up. Your belief and efforts will get you through all challenges in life,” he said.

All nine students received their admission notices from the Acting President Dr. Edward Watty and Chinese Ambassador Wang Zonglai.

The students are Jessima Barry, Bianca Talbot, Darius Jones, Husa Seaman, Mikhail Elizee, Eldon John, Casius Darroux, Lizra Fabien and Vernelle Nelissa Samuel.

They leave for China in two weeks.

107 Dominicans have studied in China since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2004.

These students will go to China and return with some knowledge of the Chinese language/s. This will strengthen relations with China and Dominica, especially with the Chinese who’ve settled here. Always a catch.

I congratulate you that you are chosen to study, a higher education in China.
Dominicans have not been told what they will be studying. I do think that Dominicans should know be informed about this.
When help is extended, there is usually an expectation of some sort of pay-back. We do know in this world, people do not do ‘nothing for nothing.’
Keep in mind that China is a communist country. There is no freedom of right in China. The Chinese government controls every one and every thing.
Religious rights and practice as Christianity are oppressed in China. China controls when, where, what time to worship and by whom.
Bishops and Priests are persecuted, prosecuted and also executed. They are forced, under China’s regime to disobey specifically the Catholic Hierarchy under pain of suffering, imprisonment and execution as also disappearance, never to be heard of again.
My fellow Dominicans, to be fair and just, while the government of Dominica and other Caribbean governments rub shoulders with China and due to China’s help, be aware of those situations. Also do your research in such matters.
Those of you who study in China, I hope you do not return as agnostics and atheists, denying the Living God who is your Lord, King and Saviour and thus condemning your souls forever. Ensure that you keep being on the right hand side of God.
There is a tendency in this world that people sell their souls for prestige, status, education, money and material possessions, eventually to their eternal detriment. Please keep this mind and when you return, hopefully, to DA with higher learning.
Since you will be traveling to China and will be there for sometime, I wish you well and in your studies. Keep your mind open but observe and at least take mental note (no one can penetrate and pick your mind).
As you are told, you represent Dominica and nationals. Therefore, govern yourselves accordingly.
God bless and protect you from all harm and other evil elements. May you return to DA safely with no impediment democratically and of course educationally wiser and in other respects.

Have you been to China? I live in China and my rights are not oppressed and I am free to worship any day at anytime, I attend church service without the fear of being arrested, so what are you talking about? People live in so-called democratic countries and become atheists and antagonists, so your point exactly?

I wonder if you reside in China or that you merely wrote your propaganda for the sake of writing. If you told a lie, God will hold you responsible for this – lying to readers, stating the untruth on this Website.
I am emphatically stating to you that you are a downright liar! Are you not listening to and reading the News, Catholic and secular especially in recent weeks? I hear it all. I also have information from years gone by about China’s oppression of Christianity.
The truth must be told. It is the obligation of those who are aware of it to inform everyone, the entire world, those who are ignorant of this fact. If it is not, someday, all the islands that China helps may be in for a rude awakening.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Those who know and do not say/do anything, it is a sin.”
A Canadian parishioner visited China, to teach, a few summers ago. She also related the conditions to me.
This does not mean that some Chinese who are not Christians would not like to become Christians and to worship. As God enlightens, if they have the inclination and wish to do so, it must be done secretly.
There are underground Catholic Churches in China but if the Chinese government finds out, it will be imprisonment for the Bishops/Priests. They will be arrested and will disappear, never to be heard of again. Western Governments should be aware of that.
Keep in mind Hitler. Read and listen. Do not be blind and deaf to this reality and what which happened and continues to occur lest you be taken unaware and suffer in the end.

What church service? Who are you trying to deceive? Surely, it is not the Christian church service but that of the one that the Chinese government has instituted that you attend, not when you wish to attend but the time and day that it has appointed. This is not freedom of worship.

Justice and Truth what are you talking about???? Have you ever been to China or are you just regurgitating hearsay and what you googled? I am Catholic and have been studying in China for 4 years. There is mass twice a day on Sundays and I have never experienced religious persecution nor heard of anyone else experiencing the same. The Muslims, Adventists and members of various denominations are also FREE to worship. As to not having freedom and rights…We live very free. Very, very, VERY FREE and comfortable. Every country has its rules and they have to be respected but our rights n freedoms are hardly in any danger. At least mine aren`t so before spewing so many words of advice and “wisdom”, why don`t you go do some proper research and really wise up about China and what things are like for us. On behalf of the new students and those of us who are already here, thanks for the blessings though.

    Greetings:

I wish to commend all the students who have been awarded the privilege to study in China. Thanks also to the Government for creating the opportunities. I however would like to single out Bianca Talbot, my “daughter”, group member, dear friend and someone who is certainly destined for greatness. I have worked with many young people and little Ms. Talbot is one of the few that has really impressed me. Please do your best Bibi as we pray for your guidance. You parents should feel very proud at this moment; even more proud that they have been. The future is yours to shape. I wish you well…may Yahweh be your perpetual guide.

Darroux you need to enhance your speaking skills. China isn’t a city, it’s a country. Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo are cities. Dominica is a country and Roseau is the city.

    Then you said:
“there will be a lot of things who will entice you”, Darroux ‘things’ can’t be referenced as ‘who’. Who is related to persons not things!

Are these really the people leading Dominica?

    • Tom
      August 13, 2012

They are there based on popular vote and you put them in. No one said anything about degree. You should go up next elections with your doctorate, that will make you win.

      • Original Eagle-Eye
        August 13, 2012

Anyways Tom not for nothing but are you implying that if someone has a PHD they will not be elected to political office in Dominica?

Are you indicating on the WWW that in Dominica we have not reached a stage to demand better of our elected officials who are at the very least making statements on Education of all things?

Are we not sophisticated enough to move beyond rum shop politics and corn curls and elect intelligent people to attend to the affairs of the country and lead by example?

It is commendable that these young persons are getting an opportunity to study abroad, but what is the use if they return and our electoral process still settle for dim wits and yah yah kan? Not saying this about the ministers I’m referencing your argument.
