Domlec gives scholarships to deserving students

The Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) has awarded scholarships to five students around the island to attend secondary school.

On July 22, 2010, the company presented text books to these recipients in a small ceremony at the company’s Fond Cole Office.

According to Acting Human Resource Manager Edith Roberts, students will receive all text books, annual stationery worth $100, and a monthly transportation allowance of $50. Students’ Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examination fees will also be covered.

Roberts noted that these scholarships are part of a DOMLEC scholarship program which has been in existence since 1986.

She explained that two out of the five recipients, Valjean Obrien Jr. and Simeon Tavernier, were children of DOMLEC employees.  A third student, Lemuel Jeremiah, was the son of a deceased DOMLEC employee. The two remaining recipients were members of the public, Emmanuel Phillip and Andrez Joesph.

Scholarship recipients are later  given the opportunity to gain employment at DOMLEC.

Under the terms of the scholarships, students are expected to provide DOMLEC with a copy of their reports cards at the end of every school year. In cases where students have difficulties with school work DOMLEC ensures that they get additional classes and counselling, according to Roberts.

Roberts noted an increase in the cost of books, and stated that DOMLEC has taken the initiative to increase the amount awarded for  text books from $350 to $400. The stationery allowance was also increased from $50 to $100.

General Manager of DOMLEC Colin Cover stated, “It is our joy, our absolute joy and honour to do this. We do not consider it to be charity because every child in here has done something noteworthy of. That child may not have gotten an island scholar or something…we think there’s potential there that needs to be developed…”

Cover said that DOMLEC intends to continue this sponsorship in the future, “Because we really think that the children are deserving …We have customers all over the island and so we try to give scholarships on a very wide basis to any deserving person that we can”.

There were 84 applications for scholarships from various schools on the island. Presently, there are 17 students attending seven different secondary institutions under the program.

A Very well deserved “thumbs up” to DOMLEC. I like when corporate businesses take measures on securing a future for our youth. Thats an excellent help for those parents of the children who were awarded. When I read DNO these are the type of news that make me smile for me country, Dominca. Keep up the good work DOMLEC, maybe one year an immediate family of mine will be awarded.

i am happy that there are intelligent institutions who invest in education knowing that education is the only way to build a country. some spend millions in other functions and at the end people return home as brainless as they left…. good job DOMLEC

Good that Domlec is giving back. I like the idea where they will provide support for struggling students. Domlec should make it a point of duty to monitor the progress of these students and take very early action.
