President of the Dominica State College (DSC). Dr. Donald Peters, received high praises on Friday for what was described as his “prudent management” of the institution.

Education Minister, Petter Saint Jean, said at the 12th Commencement Ceremony Spring Edition of the DSC, that the DSC’s financial deficit has been reduced by more than half, thanks to Dr. Peters.

“Significantly the administration has been successful in reducing its financial deficit by 55 per cent,” Saint Jean said. “Through cost cutting measures and reduction of expenditure this has been achieved. This is no small feat and I commend Dr. Peters and his team for their prudent management of the college’s affairs.”

Saint Jean said if the trend continues, “there will be no need for additional resources.”

He also congratulated the entire staff of the DSC for “the work that they have done to position the college as a truly modern tertiary educational institution.”

Meanwhile Saint Jean noted that during the past five years the DSC has presented citizens with “many opportunities” through the introduction of new degree programs.

They include Mass Communications, Plumbing technology, Political Science, Pre-Teacher Education as well as Hospitality and Tourism, Law Enforcement and Para Legal studies among others.

He also mentioned that works are in progress for a school of Agriculture and Tourism.

“There are also plans afoot to establish a fully functional and supported school of Agriculture and Tourism, two of our main economic drivers,” he said.

He stated that the programs at the DSC are also aligned with the Ministry of Education’s recently renewed focus on Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as it is in the process of introducing a degree program in Fashion Design and a certificate program in Fashion Technology and Instrument Repair and Maintenance.

Peters said they are expected to come on stream in September of 2015.

“Other significant achievements include the establishment of new articulation agreements with a number of universities thereby providing Scholarship opportunities for Tourism and Hospitality students to intern at these Universities and I have been advised in Nova Scotia Canada,” he stated.

He said a group of students are expected to depart in August of this year for Canada and congratulated the facilitators of the program.

More importantly, what’s the student retention rate? In other words, what percentage of students ENTERING the college have graduated? This would be a much more important statistic as regards the efficiency and effectiveness of DSC.
    HOTEP!

Great job! One great advice that this man gave me and some people never pay attention to is that college is a place wher e we NETWORK. Some of the people sitting next to you can be future leaders and CEO of companies in the future.
