DSC delivers successful business initiative

A participant in the program receives her certificate

Dominica State College, Fine Foods Inc. and Auto Trade Ltd. came together to celebrate a very successful Microsoft Excel for Business Course delivered by the College to management staff of Fine foods Inc. and Auto Trade Ltd.  The packed Auto Trade Ltd. Coaching Room in Canefield comprised officials of the Dominica State College, the Managing Director of Auto Trade Ltd., Mr. Karl Nassief and the successful participants.

The Microoft Excel course was 18 hours long and delivered on Saturdays and Tuesday evenings from 30th April to 5th July, 2011.  The course was delivered at two sites, the Auto Trade Ltd. Coaching Room in Canefield and the Save a Lot Office in Roseau.  Mr. Larry Thomas, the DSC Facilitator of the course, speaking at the Award Ceremony, described the participants as “highly motivated and eager to learn new knowledge and practical competencies”.

DSC Director of Continuing Education, Merrill J. Matthew, in his congratulatory remarks, highlighted what the Department of continuing Education had learned from its first delivery of a course to company managers, on-site.  He revealed that the Department had learned three critical lessons, (1) the effectiveness of informal contacts; (2) the value of effective communication with the private sector; and (3) the harnessing of the competence of staff.  Mr. Matthew thanked the management of both companies for the opportunity to work with their staff to learn these lessons and announced the intention of the Department to approach more companies to work with them, on-site, in upgrading the knowledge and skills of their staff.

Outstanding participant, Rosemary Thomas, overjoyed to receive her certificate of competence in Microsoft Excel for Business, spoke of her immediate use of the new knowledge and practical competencies and how that had improved her effectiveness in her supervisory function.  Junella Dover who topped her class in the final assessment, had much praise for the College for its instructional competence, and for the Management of Auto Trade Ltd. and Fine Foods Inc. for their continuous interest in staff development.

The Managing Director of Auto Trade Ltd. and Fine Foods Inc. expressed great satisfaction with the outcome of the course and urged his Human Resource Manager, Miss Freda Blaize, to provide the same opportunity to other members of staff in a similar customised training programme.  Mr. Nassief was particularly pleased that the successful learners were being certified by the Dominica State College as competent in Microsoft Excel for Business.

Miss Blaize who skilfully chaired the Award Ceremony, ended on a very high note of praise to all who had participated in the course and expressed the hope that there would be many more training collaborations with the Dominica State College.

It is the hope of the Department of Continuing Education that similar collaboration will be formed with companies in the private sector to ensure that the quality of excellence amongst our nation’s employees is always at optimum level.  The net effect will be a society of highly productive workers who are able to compete effectively in on our global stage.
