DSC hosts first Annual Parents Day

The Dominica State College (DSC) will host its first edition of its Annual Parents Day on Thursday, September 1, 2011 from 9am at the Goodwill Parish Hall.

Our statistics have indicated that the majority of new students entering the Dominica State College (DSC) are high school graduates, between the ages of sixteen (16) and twenty (20) years old, most of whom are still under parental control. Therefore, the parent is an important constituent to the DSC and this explains why this year we have set aside a day for parents dubbed “Parents’ Day”.

Parents Day offers opportunities for the parents of DSC students to interact with the Administration, Faculty and Staff of the DSC, learn more about the workings of the DSC, as well as acquire invaluable information that will assist them in helping make the student transition from high school to college.

This year Parents’ day will feature a keynote address by Ms. Christine Burton a former parent of DSC students, whose students has excelled at the DSC. Out of her four children who has passed through our doors, two (2) received the island scholarship while one received a special scholarship for being one of the top A’ Level performers. Ms. Burton will speak to “the role of parents in students’ achievements at a tertiary institution”. Other speakers include Ms. Helen Royer who will address our parents on the importance of Health and Wellness to their children’s performance and Pastor Marcus Francis who will deal with the importance of Spirituality. The college’s Registrar and Bursar will also make presentations to the parents.  Dr. Donald .C. Peters President of DSC will also address parents.

We at DSC value the contributions and experience of parents.  Therefore, a major outcome we expect from this year’s Parents Day would be the establishment of the DSC Friends of the College (FOC), a group of dedicated DSC parents who could serve as liaisons between the community and the college.  Parents from around the country are invited to serve while their students are on campus.  The Friends of the College group will keep in contact with current parents; host a function  during Orientation Week, volunteer for students projects, provide input and guidance on student  services, and support the college through fundraising activities and planned giving campaigns.

All Parents of DSC Freshman’s group 2011-2012 are encouraged to be at this important session.

This is simply an excellent idea and event! Hope it is the first of all the years to come. This is probably the last period in a young person’s life that a parent can still yield some positive influence and guidance.

Wonderful move! All parents of students attending the DSC should make the extra effort to attend.

i am truely glad about this, because when my daughter got into some difficulty and i went to her department head, i was told that she is “off age”, I told her even though she is 20, i am the one paying the fees, and she is under my roof. I am 100% responsible for her. The age means absolutely nothing !!
