DSC plays an active part in national carnival events

Tasha P

Dominica State College (DSC) students actively participated in Dominica’s National Carnival Celebrations 2011.

Tasha Peltier aka Tasha P, a tourism and hospitality major, won three competitions, namely, Stardom Monarch of the Tent, the Calypso Queen of Dominica and the Dominica Calypso Association Calypso Monarch for 2011.

Michelle Joseph, our 2010 Miss DSC Mas Jamboree, currently a student at DSC, participated in the Carnival Queen competition and copped the award of Miss Intelligence.

Davidson “Observer” Victor, a student in the Faculty of Health Sciences, placed second runner-up in the Stardom King of the Tent competition and made it to the semi-finals of the Dominica Calypso Monarch competition.

For the first time since its existence, the DSC participated in the opening parade of the Dominica Carnival Celebrations, through a float which showcased the 2011 Miss DSC Mas Jamboree contestants.

The college also held its second annual DSC Mas Jamboree at the Harlem Plaza. This event was a very successful one. Ms. Daina Matthew, a literature and economics major, was crowned Miss DSC Mas Jamboree. Ms. Zethra Baron, a psychology major, was placed first runner-up; Ms. Normanna Jno. Baptiste, a nursing student, placed second runner-up and Ms. Terisa Lewis, an architectural technology major, was placed third runner-up.

Performances came from a number of DSC students along with some of Dominica’s top calypsonians. Two young bands played at the event KV4D and XS Groove, while the curtain was drawn with a riveting performance by Dominica’s number one bouyon band, WCK.

The Dominica State College is extremely proud of the achievements and contribution of its students for Dominica’s Carnival 2011 and looks forward to this continued trend in the future.

President Donald Peters said that higher education requires that students integrate their academic work with co-curricular activities.  Carnival is a national event and I am pleased that our students are not only taking part in the event, but are performing at the very highest level.

We wish to take this opportunity to thank all our student performers who participated in the various competitions, and extend our congratulations to Tasha Peltier on winning the title of 2011 Calypso Monarch.

Excellent to hear this. Our culture is sooo much a part of who we are. I commend everyone who helps bring that out to us each and every year, all the calypsonians, the writers, queen competitors and other competitiors in the other shows………………and off course all the persons behind the scenes who make each activity happen. THANKS AND HATS OFF TO YOU ALL.

To the “saved ones’ – who criticise people for having a good time. Go back and read your bibles. It is your kind that does the worst things behind closed doors. Apparently you people do not know what it is to have good, clean fun. Go on pretending you are living such a clean life. Hope you can cast the first stone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Excellent participation by students of the Dominica State College.

Hj you need to pray for yourself as I think you need a lot of it. It’s people like you who hide behind the bible and do terrible things. These students need to be congratulated and this is what you should be doing. Stop making people think that you are preaching God’s word. Go pray for yourself.

(in regards to your comment) “Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown, ignorance can be educated, drunkenness sobered, but stupid lasts forever” Aristophanes (Greek: Aριστοφάνης, ca. 446 BC – ca. 386 BC)

Rebellion is •refusal to accept some authority or code or convention; “each generation must have its own rebellion”; hair style, music, dress etc.. it is not all negative!

•organized opposition to authority; a conflict in which one faction tries to wrest control from another

IF THEY REBELLED IT WAS IN A POSITIVE WAY TO ENCOURAGE THE DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURE AND A CHANCE TO NURTURE SOME OF THEIR TALENT!!

so learn what the word actually means before you use it as a meansof trying to act smart. Silence is a much better way of reflecting wisdom!

Tell your students go and pray, study their Bibles and they will realize that the almighty Father does not want them to take part in such activities. You boast there like it is something good they are doing. God is turning his face on the young people who engage in such corruption and rebellious attitude. You Mr. Donald Peters should start having Bible classes at the school so this world will know and understand what is the will of god for them. It repented the lord that he had made man the bible says. Read your Bible all the signs are showing one after the other. Earthquakes in diverse places. Wars all over. The coming of Christ is at hand. Discourage your students from taking part in such shameful activities. I’LL PRAY FOR YOU. BECAUSE I REALIZE YOU NEED GOD.

As one called out of this world and a missionary for the Lord it is my duty to point out to the young people that their choice of life is not pleasing unto the Lord.

        yow yow

Okay, but could you not send your objections to hj alone? I mean did you have to write “u christians?”

While that person may have a small point, he or she has simply expressed his/her personal opinion, you know!

I love God Almighty in His Person, Jesus Christ, but hj did not speak on my behalf, nuh! For Jesus has warned me not to judge people, wee! He even advised me to love my enemies. And boy, I am trying to obey His commands, you see!

I also have the wisdom and understanding to know that God has already chosen His people and He will call them at His time. People have different cultures as well–all people. God commanded the People of Israel to celebrate, through all kinds of feasting in the past. Not very many of them did those feasting with Him in mind either. There is all sorts of carnivals and masqeradings in different societies of this world.

Santa Claus Parade; Gays and Lesbian Parade; Caribbana Parade; in the City of Toronto has nothing to do with God either. Last year there were people demonstrating on a street of Toronto, completely naked; the news said that people were doing the same thing in other countries of the world, on that same day.

But what can I do or say about or against those pratices, except to keep my hope for the time when God’s Holy Spirit will start to speak to those people’s minds, for the sake of their Salvation, and they will listen to Him.

God is full of mercy and compassion, He knows our ignorance of Him and His Ways of Love. For that reason, He knows also, that the majority of Dominicans are simple accepting carnival celebrations as part of their culture–a way of having some fun, once a year. God is not holding that against poeple, only people who do not know better, either, makes the judgment for God. Jesus stayed among the prostitutes and the tax collectors all the time He was here on earth, so that He could heal them from their sinful habits.

Like I said already, God calls His people at His time. He has called me, in that I do not care to take part in carnival; since I now understand that it does nothing for my spirit. But that is no reason for me to lash out with judgment against those who now participate in carnival. If God has chosen them, He will call them out of the world at His time, just as He called. Their choice to hear God’s calling is their responsibility, not mine.

The truth is that people are indulge in all sorts of things that does nothing for their spirit, whether they read the Bible all day and everyday, because they do not know anything about spiritual living–the Ways of Love, which is Life–the Ways of God.

And those of us who knows God and His Ways of Love, should use our knowledge to love people, as we love God and our selves; not going condemning who do not do things our way. Most of the time our ways is not God’s Ways either. For God said: “And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines, the commandments of men. Matthew 15: 9

Why make that a war. You are a christian you don’t like the article pass it straight. I find it is very unchristian-like to be causing confusion. May God bless you all the “Holier than thou”

Are you saying that it is un-chiristian-like to participate and contribute to the culture of one’s society? Are you saying that it is unchristian-like to express one’s God given talent in the form of song (especially the lyrics of which are uplifting and will change the lives of many people- for the better?). Are you saying that people’s God-given talents should be suppresed and reserved for the glorification of God when they are inspired by other things in life- like God’s gifts of nature, culture, world events? People are inspired by the creations of God and can sing and dance to a melody, lyrics or whatever they are moved by- because of past experiences, hurdles overcome, celebration of events. I am very disappointed that someone who claims to be so christian-like can be so narrow-minded. God must be disappointed in you!

The meals Jesus eats with different people play a vital role in the unfolding story of Jesus playing a vital role in his community events and shareing in his cultural heritage!!!

They’re important because of who he eats with – often the social misfits, the outcasts, and the religiously unacceptable members of society. And they’re important because of what they represent – the future great feast in God’s kingdom.

Pray YES that you dont just read the bible but you truly understand what it is saying !! NOT what you would like it to say to suit you !!!
