DSC removes $200 late application fee; deadline extended

Dr. Donald Peters is president of the DSC

New President of the Dominica State College, Dr. Donald C. Peters, has asked his administrators to refocus the College’s resources and systems towards the creation of a college environment where “student success” is at the heart of the enterprise.

In that respect, effective immediately the two hundred dollar late application fee being charged to students by the College will be eliminated and the deadline for receipt of applications for the new academic year has been extended from July 31st to August 20th, 2010.

@Shame: I DO NOT KNOW WHO YOU ARE,BUT I WOULD SHAKE YOUR HAND.WELL SAID.DOMINICA’S LEVEL OF EDUCATION IS SO MUCH HIGHER THAN THAT OF THE U.S,AND SO THIS FOUNDATION FROM HOME CAUSES US TO EXCEL.THEY SHOULD TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY OF THIS HIGH LEVEL OF EDUCATION,AND MAKE THE MOST OF IT.IF THEY HAD A DEADLINE TO PUT DOWN ON A BLACKBERRY THEY WOULD HAPPILY DO SO WITH NO WORRIES ABOUT THE AMOUNT.I AM LIVING AND GOING TO SCHOOL IN NY,AND TRUST ME,I PAY FROM MY POCKETS EVERY FOUR MONTHS FOR MY BACHELOR.I KNOW EDUCATION IS VERY IMPORTANT,AND SO DESPITE OF THE DIFFICULTIES THAT I FACE,I STILL DO NOT PLACE ANYTHING BEFORE MY EDUCATION.I WOULD NOT DROP THE 200 LATE FEES,TO PLEASE THEM.THEY TOO WICKED.

It is evidently clear that the administrative body at the college is in chaos. One set have one story, and the rest have their own story, how much more unprofessional can this be. I am well aware too that persons in management are still challenging the fact of who is the new president. This doesn’t make any sense at all. Dr. Peters need you all support and encouragement, not staff working against him, chupes man. The man is well educated and know exactly what he is about. I mean i still do prefer my days at the college when it was CDCC, that was the bomb at the time, but give the man a chance. There is a very good reason why he is the head and not another.

The college is straight off divided. There are some who have their own clicks and fume over the fact that their pal did not get the position, but get over it. Most of the people up there have been at that college for a very long time, i’ve been there over 10 years, and they’ve been there since, and what good change have they brought about, so why would a position or title make you do differently. If you’ve been there that long, the positive change should have started already, so that whoever comes will just build-up on it. For example, it was during that same time when this presidency post was being advertised that the need to paint the college only came about? For what, just to say that i did it, to score some points. The college needed a good paint for years now. Instead monies were being spent uselessly in other areas. So please stop the grudging, stop the politics, and stop the backbiting. Do the work that you all are paid some really good salaries to do. Give the students the services that they desire and paid for, stop making it you all business, but rather the business of all involved.

I have a brother going up there, and it is really demotivating. I have other siblings, and i will try my best to inform them of better options. Unless the change at this institution is evident enough, it will just continue to crumble. And please, management, train, train, and train some more your staff. You all have a good human resource manager. Customer service is very important. And it’s high time that the educated and older people up there act their age and respect other people and their families.

Oh please, a lot of you Dominicans need to start setting your priorities right.

You prefer spend $300 on weave, and $150 on a new outfit for every event you attend. Don’t forget $1500 on the fanciest phones around.

BUT, $150 on school fee is too high. It’s wickedness to charge that amount for school fees, right?
That’s too much to spend on your education.

Ingorance makes many of you unaware that your college education in Dca is what gives most of us the basis to excell when we go to university. You criticize A levels and the Associate Degree for not being able to transfer credit and do fewer years, and do not realize that you acquire analytical, writing and comprehension skills that make Dominican students stand out wherever they go.

But it’s ok, spend the $350 on the phone, ipod, weave or latest pair of sebago, buy a bag to match the colour of every shoe, and NOT on your education. Education should be $10 so we could have the rest of the money to spend on kfc or hennessey every Friday night.

    Good luck people. Congrats.

Thats very nice. I think what needs to be done now is a workshop on Customer service for the staff who have to deal with prospective students. Too many times students with little self esteem and motivation attempt to register at the college and are turned down or somewhat demotivated because of the responses and treatment they receive from college staff.

How many students from the ghettos and poor areas of dominica struggle for a free ride to come to college after haven eaten nothing at home not knowing if there is a plate on the table when the day is done , come to an empty class with no teacher, or a teacher who would do nothing but insult your intelligence, or a this or a that … just pushing them to give up hope and go to the streets .

I hope Dr Peters also put measures in place to deal with the large number of students who come in without adequate resources. Open door, wash your feet and come policy is at a price.
DSC needs to consolidate now then expand later.

The whole system needs an overhaul, the financial system, the nervous system, the respiratory system, the managemental system, the skeletal system… all the systems too numerous to mention!

From the very moment the body was purged from CDCC tO DSC, the body started to schrink.
How can I continue my education without receiving any credits here?

    July 28, 2010

so what reallly was the 200 hundred dollar fee for??????

the DSC has ripped off many in the pass
    EXAMPLE

    1) a 20 dollar fee and restriction of access if you change you picture on your online page(even if the option is there for you to do so)

    2) a $20 fee if they make a mistake with your exam schedule and didn;t notice it within a specified period.

    3) cheap new uniform shirts for $40 when they only worth $20..

the list goes on and on!!!!!!!

    just a rip-off

There are many reasons why the children do not register, There are reports that after they pay their fares to travel to the college only to find that the tutor is absent without informing them. And the amount the college charging to research on their computer is too much. there are many more issues. When they spend so much money to go college they cant get jobs. BTC help them get jobs after they graduate.

@Shocked: I agree. That is bull s**t. When I applied to the college the late application fee was $20, in addition to the $40 registration fee. And that was just two years ago! So I want to know who come up with that $200, if is the new president well he can jus go back where he come out. Them people too greedy in their MLS…

    July 28, 2010

Good step, now start addressing the administrative issues. A good college should have a good computer system. Consult me – I can build a program for all you eh for a good fee, lol! But these things should be addressed to get matter moving!

The decline in registration is an indication that the 80% of Dominican who depends on Agriculture for their sustainance is no longer able to sustain themselves and as a result cannot send their children to school. The 20% that can afford it is directly reflected by the 20% of the poulation who have the funds— The friends and beneficiaries of Skerrit Economics– We will pay for that 5- 10yrs from now and it will be bad ——

We will soon have to import Mechanics, Farmers, Plumbers, Capenters, Masons, Tailors , etc — NO TRAINED SKILL FORCE In DA- AH _LA POOR DA— SKERIIT KILL THE country—

  17. Concerned Dominican
    July 28, 2010

BJ, you don’t make any sense. In all university systems there is a late fee penalty applied for registering after the deadline. That’s why if you want to do the program and you do not have money, you should register early and in that way any possible scholarships available you can also apply to receive it.

  18. AuditorPostmortem
    July 28, 2010

A thorough (wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor) internal audit of the college is urgently needed before it’s too late. The removal of the late fee is just a drop in the sea. What about payment for subject clashes how is this justified?

Please, please clean up the mess that is in DSC for the sake of our children who are seeking to excel using the very limited resources we have.

LEAVE OUT THE POLITICS WHEN DOING SO.

$200 late application fee. Now that’s just nonsense. Not even the American colleges charge that much for late applications

  20. oh oh
    July 28, 2010

It was about time.. i’m attending college and i was yet hear of a Late fee to be over $30USD… after the kids paying some money some of them can’t even afford, their parents are working hard in dominica to be able to pay their tuition. all you charging a late APPLICATION fee of $200EC… that was a rip off ofcourse. STUPES… DSC te’ ke’ weste’ la doh.

    July 28, 2010

HHMMMmmmm well Mr Peters I hope you all are SWOT analyses to find out the reasons why students are not registering like before. All the reasons given on Marpin News are so wrong. Face the facts and hit the nail on he head students are refusing to register mainly because of the problems they encounter. Best the college had stayed how it was in my days CDCC it was better more organised and all students were happy. RIght now it is mordernises and it is way not organised. Students face to many problems. etc etc

This $200.00 late fee was just a rip-off . I’m glad it is revoked ?

    Good move DSC .
