Education more important today – Steve Hyacinth

Graduating students at DSC

Chief Education Officer Steve Hyacinth says education has become more important now than any time in the past.

He told the graduation ceremony of over 275 Dominica State College students that if a country is to increase its competitiveness, innovation, productivity and standard of living, post secondary education of the current workforce, as well as that of the low income population must increase.

“The Secretary of the United States of America has predicted by 2012, almost 70 percent of all jobs in the workforce will require a post secondary education. Let me hasten to say that the future demands for post secondary education and lifelong learning will define the economic opportunity and security of both the individuals and nations,” he said.

He said recognizing that Dominica is becoming increasing dependant on knowledge and skills of its citizen, “we are obliged to compel our students’ to face the challenges. Our economic future is tired to the success of our students”.

According to Hyacinth, the graduates have received the education to make them more competitive in the market.

“Today is your day, enjoy it but don’t stop there, continue to climb up the ladder,” he said.
