Liselle Joseph is the recipient of the second Nurse Geraldine Roberts Scholarship.
Geraldine Roberts is a well-known retired registered nurse in Dominica who worked at both Portsmouth and Princess Margaret hospitals. Her academic competence earned her the valedictorian of the class of 1970 at the Princess Margaret Hospital School of Nursing (now the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) of the Dominica State College (DSC). Her son, Dr. Garth King, an internist based in Louisiana, USA, is the donor of the scholarship, in honour of his mother. It is for Dominican nationals pursuing the Associate Degree in General Nursing offered by the FHS of the DSC.
To be eligible for this scholarship, a nursing student must demonstrate academic excellence and evidence of financial need. The scholarship, valued at EC $5,540, covers the full cost of tuition and other programme-related fees. But in keeping with the high standards set by the donor, the retention of the scholarship is dependent on maintenance of a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5.
Ms Joseph completed the pre-requisite Certificate in Pre-Nursing with a GPA of 3.11 thereby providing evidence of her academic potential even at a time of evident personal economic challenges. The FHS believes Ms Joseph will bring much joy to the heart of the sponsor by her excellent performance on the Associate of Science Degree programme in General Nursing which she begins on January 18, 2011.
A shocked but extremely elated Ms Joseph, with heightened emotion in her voice, expressed profound gratitude for having been accepted by the selection committee and promised to demonstrate this by consistently performing at a high standard for the next two and a half years.
DSC sees this scholarship as a vote of confidence, by a person of repute, in the quality of training delivered by the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The Dean of the Faculty, Mrs. Denise Edwards, welcomes this award and publicly invites other graduates to follow the example of Dr Garth King to sponsor or part sponsor students in pursuit of their dream to become one of Dominica’s leading nurses.
Dominica will ultimately be the beneficiary of such sponsorships.
This country definetly needs caring people like you.
