Former education minister says stagnant economy is creating a situation of gloom

Ron Green

A former education minister says Dominica’s stagnant economy could take the blame for the low enrollment at the country’s sole college.

“In truth and in fact, the economic situation in the country has never been worst,” Ronald Green.

The Office of Admissions of the Dominica State College (DSC) had expressed serious concern about the small number of students who have submitted applications for entry into the 2010/2011 College programme.

One of my question is that I wonder to what extent the economic situation in the country is a factor and whether this might contribute to the lower level of registration at the college… Unemployment level is very high, opportunities for work and new signs of growth in any of the sectors are not there. It is even creating a situation of gloom,” Green noted.

The DSC expects between 900 and 1,000 to submit applications for admittance to the 2010/2011 programmes but, so far, only 385 students have applied.

Meantime Green said he is commending the executive of the DSC for measures put in place to reverse the situation.

The State College has waived the late applicant fee of $200 and also extended the date to accommodate registration.

“I wish them well and hope that they can get the expected level of registration that they want. I am sure that there are other issues that have caused a high level of frustration among students, which may also be a contributing factor,” he added.

As a DLP Supporter, I commend Ron Green for his concern about the education status in Dominica and like him , we must encourage our young people to pursue a higher education in order to reach their goal whether in Dominica or the wider caribbean.

Iether we should change our local college to that of university status withaffiliates from overseas or let Ross head the management team of DSC.

Is it the economy or the reputation of the collage. In poor economic times, students are more motivated to go to urther education to enhance their job opportunities.

Where is the current Education Officer? Why is Ron Green that is showing distress at the poor number of registration of student to the college. The current education officer should be proactive and step forward and look into the problem.

It may be that it is cheaper for students to study overseas than at the college. It may be that the students see the students who graduated from the college selling drugs or sitting at home doing nothing just like the students who graduated from Standard Seven. ( I remember after completing high school in the ’70s, I sat at home doing nothing, even if I applied for jobs. After two years of sitting at home and getting very despondent I went to see the Education Officer who took mercy on me and got me a teaching job)

I do believe that incentives need to be put in place to encourage students to study in Dominica and also new jobs need to be created so the students can be gainfully employed. It is the worst thing to think that after you have done all this studying and your parents made all that sacrifice that there is nothing to do and there is no one who give a damn!!!!!!!

Why can’t we listen to the message instaed or pointing fingers at a pass Education Minister who did well for DA in his 4 years in office. What Ron is doing now as a private citizen is his business and am sure he is doing well. Let us concentrate on what the others are doing in public office to help in the country development. They are the one that Tax payers paying, NOT Ron. When Ron time come we will concentrate on him but he did well in his 4 yrs as Education minister…For the record you can read his achievements…they were excellent……Let us get off our ignorant horse and think progressive.

Why must everything be so political? The man is making a good point but you people cannot see beyond your party colour and so the point fall on mute ears.

Although you may not agree with his statement it is true to some extent. Observe he said “I am sure that there are other issues that have caused a high level of frustration among students, which may also be a contributing factor.”

Stop being so political… lets not forget Ron Green was one of the best education ministers Dominica ever saw…. In his time as minister of Education we saw an increase in students going to Cuba and study, we saw the text book initiative which helped so many of your children in primary school and gave parents a major ease up on paying for text books, we saw lunch programs in some primary schools where for 50 cents a child could purchase lunch from the schools, we saw the construction of the Grand Bay Secondary School, we saw the additional wing of the Portmouth secondary school, we saw the construction of the Castle Bruce high school and soo much more…. how easily we forget the good that one has done for us for petty reasons (politics).
