Gov’t assistance not motivated by votes – PM

Skerrit believes government has a right to assist the needy
Skerrit believes government has a right to assist the needy

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has pointed out that government’s assistance to the less fortunate is not motivated by votes or getting votes.

He made the disclosure at a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the existence of the Alpha Center on Monday morning.

“When this government that I have the honour to lead help people I am not motivated by vote getting,” Skerrit stated. “I am not saying if I get the votes that I will not take it, but that is not my primary motivation.”

The prime minister stated that Dominica is not a rich country but the government has the responsibility to help those in need.

“This country is not a rich country. We do not have a lot of money in the treasury contrary to what people think,” he said. “And the tax dollars which we collect every day is not sufficient to run the affairs of Dominica. But that does not mean that the country does not have a responsibility to its citizens especially the voiceless and the less fortunate.”

Skerrit told the ceremony that the monthly operating cost of the Alpha Center is going to be a thing of the past as it is going to be part of the next national budget.

“I want to say to the Alpha Centre that come September the challenges which you had in putting together the resources to operate this very important institution will be something of the past,” he said. “As minister of finance I have ensured that in the budget coming in July you will have the full operating cost and this will be for as long as the Alpha Centre is operating in Dominica.”

Furthermore, the prime minister said, government will provide transportation and uniform allowance to the 37 special needs student attending the school.

“I will also ensure in the budget, which I promised when I visited you, a transportation grant for every student who attends here and a uniform allowance to every student,” he stated, pointing out that the transportation allowance will be similar to that provided to government scholarship holders.

At Monday morning’s event, over 40 certificates of recognition and appreciation were given to the many that have in one way or the other assisted the Alpha Center through the years.

Among them were the government of Dominica, numerous private citizens and companies including J. Astaphan and Co. Ltd, the Elias Nassief Foundation, O.D Brisbane and Sons.

A 40 year anniversary magazine was also launched.

The anniversary is being observed under the theme: Celebrating 40: A Beacon of Hope.

    Oh Rol

I am in total agreement with you.

Francisco Telemaque appears to be using DNO to publish his books.I have previously commented on the overly lengthy comments from Francisćo but he continues in the same mode.DNO please save us from Francisco Telemaque.

Who are you a nobody without a name to talk about someone with a name: I have written a book, and simply store it on a shelf, I am into a second one. If I wish my book published, I do not need DNO to publish it. I can spend my money which I worked for to publish as many books as I wish.

I do not have to beg, or anything like that to publish my books, I have my personal resources to accomplish that, I take care of my needs wherever they arise!

Secondly, if I need a Website to publish any book, or write on daily I can have one built any day of the week. I maintained my personal Website for more than twenty years,; I closed it last year. have you ever heard of http//www.yvonnedods.com, that was the domain of my site. Shut up you idiot!

You do not have to read my comments, simply pass them all over, pretend you did not see my submissions, I would not have seen your crap, had you not mentioned my name, as far as I am concerned you are an nobody!

Honestly this is a good gesture but the education officer is now asking small preschools with one teacher to close down, what happen to Early Childhood Education for all? where will our poor children be? on the streets? exposed to being abused? Alas! take control of the preschools we know the importance and those of us in the small communities have needs too.

This is a typical example. Everything is on the back of the government. Is there not a few D/cans who could operate a non-profit school for early child education and which the government could subsidize?

Where is your love and generosity, primarily all for the love of God? You will pay for this someday.

2 Corinthians 9-6-10 – God’s Indescribable Gift – Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written: “He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor, his righteousness endures forever.” The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

Wow, a nice manager who was employed without a wheelbarrow to his name, becomes a millionaire while the company is recording losses and accumulating massive debts. Now where is the company profits going?

So is loans they taking to get rich for the less fortunate to pay back? Is wicked allu wicked because you know the country not rich but you taking loans all over in the millions. Garcon just go and repay all those loans you took and stop playing Santa before elections.

I’m so upset. That day should have been all about the Alpha centre, the kids and all the good people who do such wonderful work, day in day out, giving themselves selflessly and anonymously. The assistance is welcome but this should not have been hijacked for the glory of a politician who gives money that is not even his own and in any case was promised long ago.. That is so sad. All the praise should go to the Alpha centre.

“The prime minister stated that Dominica is not a rich country but the government has the responsibility to help those in need”

I do not know that there are many Dominicans that will disagree with such sentiments, nevertheless, that help should not be limited to the diehard supporters of the Labor Party alone. There are Labor Party supporters who are receiving anything they ask for; or demand. Meanwhile, there are needy people who has reached out for help, and were ignored.

The people they ask for help; say I will help you, however, they never kept that promise. Indeed a politicians promises is a fools pleasure!

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Mr. Prime Minister, there is a way of doing things, if you are really serious about helping the poor, the best way to accomplish that is to make it legal by setting up a welfare system where the unfortunate can go and apply for welfare; let there be a welfare line. The taxpayers of the country I am sure would not mind contributing to such a program. I came to America a healthy man, found me a job in a matter of days after I got here. I worked a few years before I had an accident on my job at Whyle Laboratories, where I worked. I was incapacitated for a very long time, by which time I collected my unemployment, when that ran out, I collected State Disability, when that ran out, by then my wife got tired, and decided to divorce me.

All of my savings went into making my Mortgage payments on my house, when that became depleted, I had no alternative than to apply for GR (general relief) that is going on Welfare. Because of that welfare system, I was able to survive without begging, until I received a huge settlement via the workman’s compensation system, which got me back on my feet to this day.

Yes indeed, I collected welfare to survive, so who want to laugh go ahead until it happen to you, and by the way, children who are born in certain hospitals here before they are discharged from the hospital they becomes a recipient of WIC, which is from the same welfare system!

It is alleged that there are poor people showing up at some place, where they were sent to meet with you, where you simply puts your hand into a draw and pull out some money, and hand it to them. That is not how it should work; that system of giving is political, there is undoubtedly a political motive behind that system of helping. My comments here may anger you, nevertheless; that is the way I am; I am outspoken, and my outspokenness usually offends people. If it is broken, and I can repair it my business is to repair the broken component. There are people who will smile in your face, and let you believe the way you are helping is great, however, behind your back it’s something else.

If you want to be respected by the nation you lead, there should be no halfway measure. If there is a welfare system in place, all our citizens will have the opportunity to benefit from it. The way it is right now; many are called but few are chosen, and believe me Mr. Prime Minister, I have first hand experience, I know people who are literally hungry, and suffering right this moment in Dominica. As recently as Saturday someone reached out to me for some help, it was late. At 9:00 A. M. this morning I went to the Bank and got some money and wired to that person, all day I am trying to call home to give someone a coded number so that they can go and collect the money, all I am getting when I dial the number in Dominica, is that “all circuits a busy try your call later”). It is 8:00 P. M. Los Angeles time, I am worried about that hungry person.

If there was a welfare system In Dominica Mr. Prime Minister, that person would not have to depend on me totally for help, and that person is not the only one there are others I help too. I seems obligated to help from time, to time! Let us get it right. Someone is a public school teacher in our country, the man got beaten by a student, it turns out the individual could not even afford to pay for an Ex-Ray, the man is employed by the government, why has the government not provide insurance for it workers? Let us get it right Mr. Prime Minister, a welfare system would be the appropriate thing to get organized in the not too distance future.

You know, sometimes when I read the comments on DNO about Dominica and Dominicans and I hear some of the statements made overseas about this country and the people who live here, I say to myself which country are they talking about? Not the one where I live and have always lived?

      • Francisco Telemaque
        June 24, 2014

Barbara, here is the problem with; one and three sentences; I do not know what you are referring to when you say; “I say to myself which country are they talking about?” (Barbara Saunders).

“Not the not the one where I lived?”(Barbara Saunders).

The reason I fail to understand your comment is because it reference nothing; good nor bad. Assuming that people are making claims that Dominica is the most developed, and prosperous place on the planet, if you have evidence to refute that; commented stating the comments are true or false, your comments might be more understandable.

If the people in question said Dominica is the worst place on earth, and you wish to counter their opinions by presenting an argument to refute, or repute their argument, perhaps I would not be responding to your comments, be specific, there is nothing written in your submission which is informative in anyway, you simply made a closed comment, of which you are the only one who knows what you are talking about.

I don’t know which part of Dominica you live but may be it is sheltered away from the daily grind and poverty most of our people experience. No offence to the people, who live there but I would invite you to go and live for a week or so at Pond (right at the back of Mr. Skerrit’s office), Gutter and so on. The best assistance Skerritt and his DLP Gov’t could give to the Dominican people, especially those who are marginalized and made poorer, is to get off their backs.

Dominica could do without a Massa, a new colonial master. The country and its people have be impoverished over the last decade. Their standard of living have plummeted. Meanwhile, a few of those in power, have become excessively rich on the backs of the people.

Skerritt has yet to address the burning issue of Electoral Reforms. He has said nothing. The Cabal has rendered the “Independent” Electoral Commission almost obsolete. Heavy political influence has caused the Commission to accept what the Govt. wanted, NID Cards, instead of Voter ID Cards and to clean the bloated Voters’ List.

The main concerns of the people now is FREE and FAIR elections. The elections will never be FREE and FAIR without those reforms that the Commission recommended almost 9 Years now.

People want to be gainfully employed and not be treated as beggars. Skerritt wants Dominicans to think is Papa-God that give him the money to share. In fact, in his fantasies, he says so.

Again, in that instance, the Welfare Division has been disrespected and not allowed to be the institution rendering the services of assistance to those really in need.

Public service employees wont make it better if they had more money, they will only do their best when its their turn to move. Skerrit aint bad. Lazy, selfish, greedy, racist and oppressive Dominicans are who make the system hard.

You are not God. Leave the judging to God. If he is lying then he will get his just reward – God will make sure of that. Like Christ told the people who condemned Mary, look at the mote in your eye first before you condemn others. We all have our issues, and we all sin, and in God’s eyes no sin is bigger than the other. Instead let me pray for each other as a people.

If we would follow your reasoning we would not need courts, let people do what they want and let God be the judge. No police, no judges, heck we would not even need expensive lawyers. Don’t know what world you live in but I live in a real one, where people are judged, convicted, or acquited and sentenced by their peers.

General Elections are to be called soon. Coincidence one, $500, 000 were given to the church which had started its renovation approximately two years ago. Coincidence two, the Alpha Centre is forty years old, Skeritt has been Prime Minister and Minister of Finance for approximately ten years, he has decided to upgrade his responsibility. Coincidence three, their will be a reduction in cabinet Ministers, after the elections, should he win he will go back to same. Coincidence four, two months before the General Elections, Public Servants will get increases of 2%, 3% and 3%.

For those who were bla bla ing when people refer to Dominica as a WRETCHEDKY poor country, here is Skerrit saying the same thing in different ways. Let me add the main reason why the country is so miserably poor is the poor management that it has gotten from 2000 to 2014. Imagine a minister of finance who cannot even understant basic economic parlance, but the same minister is taking economic decisions on behalf of the nation!
THAT’S WHY CHANGE IS A MUST.

But why exactly is Skerrit so scared nah.? This has been going on for so long, only now you want to tell us about it? We know all about it Skerrit. Those who have gotten $$$$$$$$$$$$$, especially the YOUNG AND STRONG ONES always had their story to give to someone. What they had to say to their master, how they had to dress, the amount they got, if they got more than they expected, if it was for the purpose etc. if they returned for more, etc. WE KNOW IT ALL SKERRIT!!!!!!!.
I just find it darn malicious and wicked that peoples tax money in such a poor, badly bruised and badly managed country is being used by one man to buy votes so that he will perpetuate himself in power. IT IS INDEED A SHAME, AND HAS TO STOP SOON!!!!

surely at such a function the PM should be praising the people who have worked tirelessly for years to ensure the alpha centre is what it is today – instead he using it as a moment to score political mileage? Same thing he did at a church service – talking about public works on pulpit?

A time and place for everything and everything in its place and at its time PM!

Mr Skerrit – if you were not doing certain things to score points you would have the designated ministers making certain announcements – for example, alpha centre should be under the responsibility of the Social Services Ministry or have you taken over that ministry as well?

It would help your credibility if you could post a list of all the assets of the government ministers and their salary . Then post a list of all the members of opposition and their salary followed by the same information for the ministers in all other Caribbean Islands.

      • Anonymous
        June 23, 2014

        – IPO has that information…except from those who refuse to cooperate.
        – don’t you think we have enough troubles of our own without putting our noses into other islands affairs?

Typical tactic of diversion, it wont work. Today we have people on the ground, who are aware of that an know how to counteract. No fear.

      • June 24, 2014

Yeah, and while u at it, plz put up the assets that Skerrit had right before he entered Parliament because unlike Linton who owns his vehicle and house the PM did not own even a book cover to drive fly.

Of course there is no other way that such colossal wealth could be amassed in such a short period of time and on a Dominican minister’s salary.

I would like to suggest that we all play the Euro Lottery and win win win!

Nothing is motivated by votes or getting votes for the young leader. Not even giving away free travel tickets for the sole purpose to go home and vote, is motivated by votes. Such disclosures are nothing new, and they won’t get old once the lies continue. By now we all know “actions speak louder than voice.”

With all the promises, promises, promises by one man, makes you wonder who is who and how can we allow our beloved country run as an estate owned by….?

We know and support government assistance for the less fortunate should always be first on the social welfare agenda. The idea to keep mentioning responsibilities as above and beyond is disingenuous and silly.

Mr. Prime Minister, please get yourself a copy of The Prince (by Machiavelli) and then let’s talk.

This is politics and there is only one motivator in that game, and that is power. Every move a politician makes is designed to keep him in power.

Nobody is saying that what you do cannot be of benefit to the citizenry, but when all is said and done, you have to be the main beneficiary in the end. That is how the game is played.
