Gov’t to launch education mentorship program

mentoringPrime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has announced that Government will launch an education mentorship program targeting primary and high school students.

“This programme is targeted at College students who are not working now,” he explained  during a function in Dublanc earlier this week. “Together with the Youth Division and the Adult Education Programme, we are going to launch a major program of education mentorship, where a number of our young students at high school and primary school, who have no help at their home with homework and studying and may have challenges will get help”.

He noted that college graduates will be employed in this program to provide educational mentorship support to these students who need learning support after school.

He said the Government will pay these college students a full salary to carry out those functions.

Skerrit also that some 99 citizens from the north who registered for a Hospitality training program at the Dominica State College (DSC) have officially commenced classes.

He said upon completion of the programme, participants will be placed on attachment at various tourism establishments across the country.

In this light the prime minister has urged unemployed citizens of Dublanc and other communities to embrace the employment opportunities afforded to them.

“I am urging you that when the opportunity comes for training you should take it, you cannot stay home and say that you are unemployed, if the initiative comes for training you should take it,” he noted.

The training is part of a National Employment Mentorship program which will be fully financed by the Government of Dominica and is expected to benefit 400 unemployed citizens.

Don’t forget that most of our college graduates need mentoring in a lot of areas. makes one wonder what they learn at college. So how are they going to mentor children? too many cooks spoil the soup. Please think about this carefully before we confuse children even more. Let teachers do their job and pay them more to do it.

This is an excellent initiative. There must be proper supervision to avoid abuse of the system for petty political gains. I am eager to see this project move off the ground. Great idea indeed.

Dominicans, when a regime have ran out of ideas as this one has, they are begging to be put out of office. PM want to go and do other things with his life. So please be wise and get his message, he has nothing else to offer Dominica,he served well, so now just let him go and rest he is worn/burnt out.
He gave you all Charles as President purposefully so all you could remove both him and Charlo from office, and now all he has is feverish activities which mean nothing.

Just one question, why this feverish activity all of a sudden, what was happening the last 14yrs,why were these things not done then, why now, how long will these initiatives last for.

If he is giving them a salary or stipend, small as it is it is a win-win situation for both college grads who are just unemployed and idle plus the kids being mentored. The grads will have something useful to put on their resume, plus earn a little change. The kids in school will get help with homework and hopefully advance academically and the time spent will help them stay out of trouble. How is this a bad idea? Besides playing politics, I mean.

Aside from the poitics I’m thankful that some intitiative will be taken especially for graduates like myself who have yet to find work in the private sector.

Again and sadly Dominican voters are not smart at all actually they never had it in them.

what were the issues did they vote them back in 2009 for..do citizens hold regimes accountable on promises in their manifesto etc…

will always say if Dominicans in General were smart thinkers and had vision, their would be not even a sniff of this regime surviving to govern.

but again it’s dominicans way to droll and lack lustre to even think, is so it is..the dominican mindset of being proud to be ignorant.

The education programme will benefit you!! Number one please use proper grammar eg., there instead of their and secondly please DO NOT insult Dominicans like this. How dare you generalise and say that we’re not smart. It’s insulting to say the least.

Those things are going to just frustrate those college grads…

this labour regime has no clue how to expand and grow a economy…Dominicans need to try a new set of minds for governance and see what happens..

The US,UK and other civilise Countries simple change Regimes when they are expired as this Labour regime is for over 13 years….

Bring on new blood in Dominica..time for change

    Questions need to be asked..

can Govt sustain paying salaries to all these mentors, will it be $300.00 a month or $2,800 a month…things need to be done properly and professional in my view..not just a loose cannon type of way…OMG i feel sad for Dominica..

    no vision the citizens perish..

Seems like a eruption of ideas and plans have all of a sudden bombarded Dominicans, by Labour..

Please Dominicans this is just a pre-election catch a vote…

Remember they are in Power for over a decade…

Labour reign has caused Dominica to be listed by various agencies and the US State Department Cables as the “Poorest in the Eastern Caribbean”

Is it as a result of they (labour party) having to spend lots of money fixing grounds which were broken, tous pas tous, by UWP and left unpaved?

And who will be overseeing this program? I would love to apply

It’s rather sad after 13 years in ruling a regime lacks ideas…well labour party never came in with a plan, it was corruption against the UWP!

so where is the 500 jobs he said he would soon speak about…

those things will just continue to breath poverty in the island…

Prime Minister let your skilled nationals build the school at newton under supervision, they bust stop let them build it..that’s how money spills over into the economy…

where there is no vision the citizens “Perish”
how sustainable are these things, why not review the “Vat” in certain areas, expand the economy that’s how u release the pressure…

For Dominica to discard as the Poorest in the Eastern Caribbean, their must be a effort to think “BIG” investors love when regimes think Large and futuristic my friend…

what sort of salaries will those mentors be paid..
why not down size on your crippled cabinet of ministers, take a 10% salary cut to let the citizens see you care..

Labour has brought darkness and death to Dominica, God help the UWP to rid the curse..it won’t be a easy task..lives may have to be lost for change, as it will be difficult to vote em out by the ballot..they will intimidate the voters at all angles…sadly dominicans are not known to be firm and militant in their approach they fade away too easily..

It is interesting to note that a Youth Mentoring Programme was initiated by DAAS as follows:

“A meeting was held at the Public Service Training Center on February 19/2010 (?) with a group of students from a number of secondary schools in Roseau. The meeting was arranged by Ms Barbara Dailey of the Ministry of Education to introduce the proposed DAAS mentoring program to students from the secondary schools around the island as well as the Dominica State College.”

      And…?

    • Nature Spice
      October 11, 2013

Well that is the Modus operandi(MO)of this government. They have ran out of ideas and initiatives, so they (the government) have to highjack other people or organizations ideas and make it pass as theirs. Remember the Waitukubuli National Trail and what they did to Bernard Wiltshire.

The other issue I have is why is Roosevelt Skerrit is the one going around and speak of initiatives from other ministries. Where are the Ministers and in that case the Minister of Education?

It does not even make sense give this government ideas or alternatives because these ideas are not being take seriously.

I have never seen Dominica in that state and it is very sad. We are going down a sleepy slope or are we there already?

that is taking out bread in people mouth. we have after school programs who are struggling why not support the programs and then have these students employed at these centres. the Government is competing with private citizens. This is so unfair…. people have got and created employment for themselves this money should be given to these programs that already exist to upgrade their facilities and then have these students work at this institution. these college students need more help and will not be able to cope withe the challenges that these students face.

but wait wait wait. how to please allu people nuh.. when he send them to the private programs don’t they have to pay? smh. the students will b paying and the governement is paying the tutors. toneh man. anything that is done obviously is competition. if i open a snakette now is competition or a salon is cometition a a. so as i already want to go to the program for help and i do not have to pay u want me to go to a private program i already cannot afford eh? i ready to go to the gov’t afternoon program and skerro will pay my tutor ok. my 2 cents
