Gov’t to take youth unemployment seriously says Charles

Charles said youth unemployment has become a growing global concern

Youth Affairs Minister, Justina Charles has stated that the government will be taking a serious approach to the issue of youth unemployment, following the presentation of a $1.million contribution by the government to the Dominica Youth Business Trust (DYBT).

The money was handed over to the DYBT during a ceremony at the Windsor Park Stadium conference room last week.

Charles said that the challenge of youth unemployment and its impact on any country has become a “growing global concern.”

“This has caused youth unemployment to be a regular feature on all agendas relating to youth empowerment and youth mainstreaming,” she said.

She also said that promoting an entrepreneurial spirit and conducive environment can “ definitely help in addressing the unemployment concern.”

“The young people with all their entrepreneurship ideas find it extremely difficult to start their businesses, and this probably has been so because of the constraints or challenges day to day to source the finance for their businesses,” Charles stated.

According to Charles, the majority of the youth who engage in such businesses do not possess the collateral to drive them to start their small businesses.

“Therefore government continues to give the support to initiatives To empowering our young people,” she said.

Chairperson of the Dominica Youth Business Trust Josephine Dechausay Titre expressed gratitude to the Dominican government for their contribution, saying that the “funds will go a long way.”

“This manifestation of your support is very encouraging. Please be ensured that these funds will go a long way in strengthening the operations of the program….We commend the beneficiaries of the DYBT program who are making us proud based on their local, regional and flowing international impact,” Titre stated.

The Dominica Youth Business Trust (DYBT) is an initiative of the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) and the Government of Dominica, with support from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

Justina, that is so embarrassing. That E.C. 1 million is a drop of water on a hot plate. You spent over $140,000 on a reception for Baroness Scotland for the chosen few and can only find $1 million for unemployed youth? It would be laughable if it was not so painful. All you doing is buying yourself a good image but none of us that stupid to swallow that miserable bait my lady. SAkerrit would never have put you in that position if it was not for your deceased husband and never forget that!!

Justina, you all have failed Pierro Chares Big time, ur government is incompetent, visionless, corrupt, abusive to we the Dominican people and poverty increases and the youth lament in prison.

It there a whiff of election in the air?

This Govt has failed the youth on the island miserably by the lack of planning, vision and sound development policies. Youth employment should be tied into some of these development projects (lol) but the cabal were always more interested in lining their pockets in the first place.
Dominicans will wake up to this when they realise just how wealthy some politicans have become in the last 17 years while feeding them lies.

The only way to bring down the unemployment rate is to give the private sector the chance to invest more and in return they will hire more people.. Cut down the import duties on raw material. You cant beat a dead house to walk again… The poor man don’t stand a chance. That’s why our main export continue to be Dominicans looking for an escape out there..

So Justina, you mean after almost 20 years of DLP rule its only now that “the government will be taking a serious approach to the issue of youth unemployment”??????
What about this new approach that will be different from the old approach????
No wonder Dominicans continue migrating in droves to greener pastures.

Justin, please behave yourself with this non-sentimental business about youth. Charles said youth unemployment has become a growing global concern. Correction, Youth Unemployment in Dominica is and has been A creation of your inept PM and corrupt Labour Government. Our dedicated, decent Brother Pierre Charles (a Clean politician and Prime Minister, a champion for the youth – NYC) must be turning in his grave, and you should have some level of guilt to be part of these corrupt team. Your government has killed the enthusiasm of the youth and all you do is offer outdated statements making no sense.
This growing phenomenon will continue in Dominica for a long time under you

You guys been in power for 17 years. More admissions of failures. 17 years later kids who were 17 are now 34. Effectively a whole generation has been f’ Ed up. What are they going to leave for thier children? Absolutely nothing. There lies the story of our future. More dependency and poverty. A 34 year old today cannot afford to buy land, and build own home on and individual teacher pay. Yet they sit and say nothing.

NEP is Skerrit personal youth Programme to prop him up, he has no quality initiative to give us, so use and abuse the name of youth as an excuse. Skerrit is clueless of development and engage in a fast food obesse diabolical plan to ………the people of Dominica meaningful development.
