Grand Fond Primary School holds Literacy and Skills Day

Students at the event

The Grand Fond Primary School on Thursday hosted its first Literacy and Skills Day aimed at improving reading among the male student population of the institution.

The activity was held under the theme “Boys on the Move,” and was developed after an assessment revealed that, in many cases, boys were performing below class level.

“The focus is on the boys. We are trying to get them motivated to read more and to read better. We see this activity as a stepping stone for them to perform better not only in reading but in all aspects.

“We named the event ‘Boys on the Move’ because we want them to be participatory in their own learning so that they begin to feel invested in their own success,” said Hatty Leslie, Principal of the Grand Fond Primary School.

The event began with a special assembly led by the boys and culminated with a motivational march led by cadets from the area, to which the entire Grand Fond community was invited.

During the assembly, the school honoured those boys who read at or above their level, using the opportunity to emphasise the importance of learning to read well.

Parents were also invited to view exhibits prepared by the students, depicting “all things boys” like cricket bats, kites and trucks. The boys benefited from motivational talks from elders in the community and demonstrations in agriculture, cooking, carpentry, use of computers and art & craft.
