The 2014, Kalinago Summer Scholastic Challenge is being hailed as a success by its organisers- the Ministry of Carib Affairs.

The program, initiated by the National Employment Program (NEP) interns attach to the Ministry, was hosted in an effort to enhance the literacy skills of children between the ages of 9-13 of the Kalinago Territory.

“It is not only our responsibility to keep the children safe, but it is also our duty to educate them,” Kerrel Dangleben, who is the Community Officer for children at the Ministry of Carib Affairs, said.

The summer program which ran for three weeks ended last Friday with a price giving ceremony for participants and winners of the scholastic challenge, which included a reading, spelling and mathematics competition.

Kalinago heritage formed a major aspect of the program where participants were introduced to Kalinago Language and Kalinago history.

Participant also received sessions on building positive self image and boosting confidence in school and personal life.

The program was made possible through the generous contributions of Fast Cash Dominica, Jays Ltd, the East Dominica Children’s Federation and diaspora Kalinago Cuthbert Cuffy.

Just over 40 students participated in the program.
