Kitwanie Carbon has become the first recipient of an education initiative undertaken by the Marigot Development Committee (MDC) in partnership with Versan Education Services of Jamaica.
Carbon, a 2012 graduate of Convent High School, was successful in securing the scholarship, through the experienced guidance provided by the MDC/Versan Initiative.
She will pursue college/university preparatory studies at The MacDuffie School in Massachusetts, USA, starting September, 2012.
The 16-year-old was also successful at the 2012 CXC examinations with eight Grade 1’s and three Grade 2’s. Through the intervention of the MDC/Versan Educational Programme, Carbon’s scholarship will cover over 90 percent of the cost of tuition, board and lodge for her two year programme at MacDuffie.
Kitwanie, the daughter of former Government Senator Swanston Carbon and his wife Corinthia, earned the honorary title of “Junior Tourism Minister” after she emerged winner of a Caribbean Tourism Organization youth conference in St. Maarten last year.
Versan Educational Services of Jamaica has been in operation for over 18 years facilitating students in Jamaica and the Caribbean in preparing for and accessing, with funding, accredited college/university preparatory boarding schools, colleges and universities in North America.
600 students from Jamaica and 1,200 students worldwide who have participated in the Versan Educational Programme have been awarded scholarships this year valued from US$25,000 to US$55,000.00 per annum.
The MDC has partnered with Versan to offer the services in Dominica.
Local Program Director and MDC Chairman, Michael Pascal, stated that this early success and substantial scholarship award is an indication of significant benefits that can be obtained by participating in the Versan/MDC Scholarship program.
He further indicated that a number of promising athletes from WesMar Rangers of Marigot have also been identified for assistance under the Sports Scholarship component of the programme.
These athletes are expected to attend US Universities on Sports Scholarships in fall 2013.
Kitty, I’ve been following your progress closely.I know you will continue to shine, I have no fear for you. Your parents did their very best, you are well grounded–spiritually, educationally, socially and domestically. You know right from wrong—you gonna continue to shine! Love you always. May God continue to bless you and your parents.
Congrats- keep working this hard and opportunities will certainly keep coming your way- make the best of it each time!
congrats, way to go MDC,let us hope that more parents and students take care of this opportunity because Dominica has alot of bright people, but the opportunities and money is not always there,
The Marigot Development Corp? WAW! Big up MARIGOT!
With the success, comes more challenges, yet greater opportunities in life. Face them both with the same zeal and determination, as you have always done. Congratulations to my little sister and best wishes for your future endeavors. Love you…
Congratulations young lady and best wishes in your endeavours.
Congratulations, you are a bright star for Dominica. We wish you well.
Kitwanie my dear cousin, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! Go out there and excel. I wish you God’s richest blessings in all that you do.
Excellent move MDC. Continue to demonstrate to other communities that we can forge ties that will impact the lives of young Dominicans positively. Human resource development equalls Dominica’s devlopment. Congratulations to Kitwanie. You have been demonstrating your ability through Secondary school and I am sure you will do extremely well at college.
YAYYYYYYYY Kitty!!! omg i am soo happy 4 u!!! :):):):):):):) lots of luv:D
God’s speed and guidance Kitwanie…All the very best in your studies…we know you are quite capable and this will be a challenge only because you will be away from home and in unfamiliar territory…keep in mind however the support that will still be available under the programme when those tough days come your way.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Congratulations to you Kitwanie. I wish you well. Swanston do not grudge other parents who are also looking for opportuities for their children. We all want to assist in Dominica’s development.
huh? What maypwe you giving Mr. Carbon? It would be you that’s grudging. Why don’t you take that up with him personally? You see this is my problem with Dominicans. Stop with the envy. I know Mr Carbon and his great man. Please stop your childish rant. ugghhh disgusting!! Just say congrats. She worked for it!
and what do you mean by that? it seems that you are the one with a grudge.
A little twisted this one…
International travel and experiences will certainly broaden your outlook on the world. Stay focused on the discovering the truth because there is much deception that will be thrown your way that will be put forth as truth.
congrats Kitwanie and good work MDC we the people of Marigot at home and abroad 100% behind you
keep up the good work and urging us Marigotians to give more support
Congrats Kitwanie. Congrats to the parents for nurturing a smart child who seem to know what she wants in life.
As a graduate of the Convent High School, this young lady is more than prepared to enter directly into any US college/university. I began my college education in the US straight from high school and I was perfectly evenly, if not more advanced than US students from high school. All Ms. Carbon needs is to take the SAT and apply. I think the MacDuffie School is an unnecessary step.
I think it’s an okay move. It gives her the opportunity to orient herself to the academics and way of life in Mass. I wish someone had did that for me when I moved to the states. Although I was able to find my way it would have been nice if I could have found out a few things in advance. It’s just two years and if she wants to apply to MIT, Harvard etc it will be an even smoother transition from a US school. Kitwanie is a very community focused individual so you know she’ll get involved with extracurricular activities which doesn’t hurt for college applications. I think it’s okay, she’s just 16 years.
Your opinion…………….congrats Kitwani you make your parents proud they have done a wonderful job. Be all that you can be
At least have the humility to include somewhere in there in your piece ” in my humble opinion”.
How arrogant you must be to just assume that this young lady’s situation and yours are exactly identical so that her path to university education should be identical to your too.
Lastly you could be just a little gracious and offer Ms. Carbon your congratulations somewhere in your snark. You could have found space for it.
It is also a very expensive school. But look who is paying the bill. I would think that she would be able to attend a Community college for a year. if necessary but maybe the application deadline had passed before she got her scholarship.
I remember when Kitwanie was a little girl running around her parents’ store in Roseau…goodness, it’s been a good 10 years now! Seems like yesterday!
Strong overture by the people of Marigot. The highly literate people of this community recognise the need for local subvention when government is financially challenged.
keep moving up kitty gods blessing towards you sweetie…………remember in everything sweetie give thanks …..tiney
Nice, make the best of it my dear. Bright young lady, your future looks bright!
This is a very significant move by the MDC; it has finally started to see its role in the overall development of the country and there is no better way to so do than investing in our human resource development. You all “are coming to come”.
Congrats. Kitwanie. With diligence and perservarance, you will succeed. Dig up to MDC and Versan Education Services! Dig up to Swanston and his wife!
CONGRATS
Congrats Kitwanie. Keep shinning the sky is the limit
Awesome! Happy for you Kitwanie. I know you will do well.
