Mathematics is everywhere

The Ministry of Education and Pearson Education Publishers held a two-day Caribbean Primary Mathematics Teacher Training/professional Development Workshop last week in Roseau.

The teachers from primary schools around Dominica met for several hours developing teaching skills, developing creativity, building awareness and enhancing learning in mathematics using teachers guides, pupil workbooks, teaching aids,  Games and puzzles, CD-ROMs, websites and other technological devices.

Chief Education officer Steve Hyacinth said this exercise has come at an opportune time for the ministry as greater emphasis is being placed on numeracy.

Pearson Education Publishers Primary Mathematics books series is already available to grades 3-6 in Dominica’s primary schools. They are also working with the ministries of education in the sub-region to produce texts relevant to the common grade-six exit examinations due to come on-stream in the New Year.

Here are two websites I believe would be beneficial to students the elementary and secondary levels of education. Funbrain.com is an interactive site that teaches children from kindergarten onwards. http://www.patrickJMT.com is an important learning resource that can be useful from First form to college level mathematics

Teachers have not made math a fun subject to this day both at elementary and secondary level. I think the math teachers do it as a job and not because they have a passion for it or really want to see students excel in that area. Teachers need to love thier subject more so when students pick that up from the lesson, they will share in the feel and passion.
This comment goes in general for school. Learning is supposed to be fun and teachers have not been trained to make it fun. Test are a punishment to children. So many schools strive on surprise tests a habit that has been removed from most learning institutions years ago. I want my children to have a different attitude toward math than how I was at school 20 years ago.

Every school in Dca must have access to internet services, so our kids can have a knowledge of the internet, what its all about and what it does and so they can have acces to what ever info.

People, this is the man (center of photo) who cultivated this year’s island scholar from Petite Savanne Primary. Its a shame that all media houses in Dominica underplayed this particular news item…i guess it would have been different if it had come from a “Roseau” school…
