Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development to address PTA concerns at NECS

Broken windows at the school

The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development has extended an invitation to the executive members of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and principal of the North East Comprehensive School (NECS) to meet with senior education officials on Monday November 28th to discuss their concerns.

Education officials will dialogue with stakeholders to address their most pressing issues in relation to the physical environment of the school, and outline the ministry’s plan for the continued development of the NECS.

The policy of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development is that education is not a privilege but a right of every Dominican child. Therefore, the ministry will continue to provide support to all educational institutions in Dominica.

As part of ongoing schools’ maintenance, work on the technical block of the NECS, funded by the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) in the amount of EC$813,417.00 is near completion. An additional amount of EC$114, 766.00 has been approved by the BNTF for its completion.

Improvement works under the Dominica Education Enhancement Project (DEEP) began in August 2011, at a cost of EC$112. 882.00. Plumbing works in the Food and Nutrition Room and installation of curtains and a mirror in the Clothing and Textile room have been completed as well as metal works in the Food and Nutrition, Technical Drawing and Auto Mechanic rooms.

Additional works are ongoing on the construction and installation of storage cabinets to the Technical and Auto Mechanic rooms and installation of electricity in the Technical Drawing room.

In June 2011, seventy chairs were supplied to the school and fifty more will be delivered by next week.

In 2007 twenty (20) new computers were donated to the school and in 2009 thirty (30) additional new computers were provided under the ICT Development Project. The school was also equipped with a fully functional server and network.

The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development will, during the Christmas holidays undertake phased work at the NECS to replace damaged windows. This will involve the installation of twenty-four windows on the western classroom block and two windows on the administrative block.

Work on the walkway, linking the classroom block to the other parts of the school compound, will commence during the summer of 2012.

I went to the St. Andrews High School, and we respected our school. But let us face it, a lot of the parents today, are still kids. They still think, act and behave like kids. You cannot lead where you don’t go and you cannot teach what you don’t know. When the so called parents grow up and start conducting themselves as adults then we will begin to have well trained kids. Just my honest input.

EVEN IF THE CHILDREN DO DAMAGE THE SCHOOL,IS IT NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE GOVERNMENT TO FIX THE SCHOOL.WHATEVER SCHOOL IN WHATEVER COMMUNITY!COMMON PEOPLE!NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE POLITICS!JESUS HELP US!

I saw this coming to NE Comprehensive

    The signs were there:
    1. The security booth at the entrance to the school was vandalized. No one said anything.
    2. Littering was rampant. None said anything
    3. Graffiti started. It was brushed aside
    4. Furniture was damage. It was not addressed
    5. Windows were mysteriously damaged. No one cared.

A school is made up of a leader (the principal), the staff, the supporting non-teaching staff, the students and the parents (PTA). If any combination of these goes bad, we have problems. I suppose you can look at the school potentially as an arrow. The principal is the tip of the arrow and the rest of the arrow head is the staff. The long and slender neck is the diverse student body. And the ultimate rudder (feathers) represents the all important Parent Teachers Association. You can have all the good intentions in the world but if the structure is not sound and functional, that arrow will not fly to the target you are aiming for. So we need to look at the leadership, the staff, the quality of students and the support from the PTA and the community at large.

I personally don’t know what else government can do that it is not already doing. We need to be honest about this business of preparing children to take there rightful places in society. This can not be a game. There is no room for politics in this business. Politics is best defined as public entertainment. Moulding children is no joke!
The Grand Bay secondary school remained without a single scratch on its walls for more than 10 years. Then almost overnight, hell broke loose there. Enough said on that. The most recently built schools are the Salybia and San Sauver primary schools. And of course there is the DGS plus improvements to PSS. The public needs an update on the condition of those schools. Taxpayers will be footing the bill for the construction, repair and maintenance of these complexes. No more taxation without adequate information on the condition of those school buildings.
    I’m upset!

Stout man, it is not that serious, I never intended to abuse or attack you, let us simply chuck that up as nothing more than spilt milk!

No hard feelings, by the way, because someone uses the term, or word word ignorant, it’s not an indication that the other person is an idiot, or actually stupid, it could simply mean the person does not know, about something or aware of a situation.

I.E. if I drove around a connor, at eighty miles per hour, and ran into an obstacle that was placed there without my knowledge, and saw no warning signs on approaching the obstacle, I would be ignorant of the obstacle, but that would not make me a dumb or stupid person.

So, simply view it that way, I do not mean you are dumb at all!

It is an interesting statement you made Mr.Telemaque, “In Wesley, it common to hear children say In Wesley, it common to hear children say my ambition after high school is to go to my ambition after high school is to go to further my studies, meaning they intend to further my studies, meaning they intend to move on to collages and universities! move on to collages and universities! I used to laugh at my Niece Tiffany, when I used to laugh at my Niece Tiffany, when she threw that rhetoric at me,she threw that rhetoric at me.” I guess its common for you to laugh at young people even your own family who are ambitious instead of encouraging them…..SMDH….SO SAD!

really sad.i m sure if we could choose who our family members are this one would not be on tiffany s list.

You are been ridiculous, I do not even understand why you plugging me, I am aware of the errors I made, however, I discovered the mistakes after I post the message.

Normally, I do not edit my writing; I am guilty of that, and if you think I am in the habit of laughing at children, that’s in your opinion, however, all of my life that’s my personality and habit, anybody who knows me well in Wesley, will tell you when I was a kid growing up; from a distance they saw my big white teeth long before I got to where they were, one of my nickname was teeth, and the other was fingers:

And I doh telling why eh, just doh ask me!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I always laugh, even now, I clown around and make jokes with my family, I can be an idiot when I feel like becoming one.

And let me tell you, in spite that I laugh at my nieces’ rhetoric, I have been an influence, in her life.

She came to Califorina, to visit with me when she was about nine years old, I was in School at that time trying to change career, going from the electrical, and electronic engineering profession into the medical profession.

Tiff, one day asks me if I could let her look through a pile of books I used in class, I allowed her, she started scrutinizing my text books, and immediately decided she wanted to take that route also, I am very happy to tell you I am more than happy of her success right now, and believe it or not we make each other laugh our heads off!

As recently as this summer when I visited with her and my sister, in Jersey, she and I laughed and clown around like a couple of kids, I been the older.

Laughter is pleasure, laughter keeps away stress, and anger!

Try laughing sometimes even when there is nothing to laugh about; simply force yourself to laugh, and you will experience something very healthy.

If you find a pile of errors in this one simply ignore them, cause I doh editing this one and it aint because I doh can write, and spell, and doh can talk English oui!

Let common sense prevail. That’s the right thing to do. Teach the kids to take care of the school and their civic responsibilities.

    • November 23, 2011

Stout Man, you are as ignorant as many of the others who makes all sorts of ignorant statements; you people do not know half of the Students, of Wesley, and the neighboring villages who attends that School.

I mean it is ridiculous, how you people are making the Students the scapegoat.

Be realistic, we are talking about a high school:

At what age do students enter High School?

They are adults with ambition, unless they are all mentally deranged, I suggest it is impossible for them all deciding at the same time to go on a rampage and destroy the place were they go to prepare themselves for their place in society.

In Wesley, it common to hear children say my ambition after high school is to go to further my studies, meaning they intend to move on to collages and universities!

I used to laugh at my Niece Tiffany, when she threw that rhetoric at me, she graduated at that high school, eventually, she indeed went to ” further her” here in the United States,in the State of New Jersey, where obtained a degree in health science, and some other discipline; and is on her way to Medical School.

She is the daughter of younger sister Bernie, my niece is less than twenty-three years old!

That is our tradition in Wesley, that is why our village has produced so many scholastically educated people, including Gloria, her brothers’ Evance Dods (Dodds)and Cyrus, who himself is a former school principal, and her sisters, and, I the kid her cousin who is an Electronic/Electrical Engineer, also a Health Science Major, medical student dropout!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

So,let us place the blame where it belongs, and do not blame the students.

As everything else people need to maintain the house in which they live, failure to do so will result in the decay of the house due to termite activity, the use of poor cheap, and inferior material used in the construction can be a contributing factor.

It is false to impress on anyone that the building is only Six years old, and the children vandalized it, when we all know that construction commenced on the building in 1999; thus 2011 – 1999 = 12; that makes the construction of that building twelve years old, and I stake my life on that.

I have a sister who lives close to the school, standing in her yard, the voices of the student echoes in out ear. I do not visit Dominica, and Wesley very often, however, I am very much in the know concerning everything that goes on in my village. I have been a contributor of money, hard cold cash to purchase certain things for that school, the last contribution I made, they told me it was to purchase a PA system for the school.

In the end we found out the person whom we gave our money to for the purchase, did spend the money for what it was intended, except he took all the credit, as if it was all his personal money that went to the purchase.

I am not going to get on his case for that because he is (me cousin also) you see.

There you have it Stout Man, do not shift the blame on the students, I believe there is a lot of politics involve which caused the neglect of that school causing it to fall in the state we now find it.

Though Gloria, is not entitled to use her personal money to repair the damages, it is her responsibility as our parliamentary representative to draw the situation to the attention of the Education Minister, and the boy Petter should have taken it from there and resolve the problem long before the building deteriorated this bad.

If this is the Bernie I know and her daughter is tiffany, then it means Tiffany attended St Andrew’s High and not North East Comprehensive. Sir, you are well within your right to defend your fellow villagers, but I draw the line when you would say that they would not engage in damaging furniture and other school property.the children do need to be taught to respect public property. you are not helping them when you say this. BTW Tiffany, quite a relative you got there LOL

      • November 23, 2011

Anonymous, I messed you up lots of times, because I know that you are a dunce, but I think I have to come to the agreement with you, that some of the damages might be caused by a few of the children, however not all okay.

I had to come to that conclusion after talking with my sister in New Jersey about an hour ago.

None of my sisters have ever lied to me in the past, so I have to believe her when she told me that there are a few who indulge in the consumption of alcohol on the campus, in that case, drunken students could have caused some of that damage, but not all.

And in that case the culprits, or offenders should be expelled from school because of the destruction of public property.

In as much as I lay the blame on Gloria’s shoulder, I have to be fair also.

This does not mean I am prepared to let you off the hook as of yet, because I still consider you an idiot, and a dunce cap!

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahah!

That’s what you get for knowing my sister and niece, I will clear you from the idiot, and dunce cap category when you commence writing under your true name, and not some fictitious phantom name; endorse what you write even if it is filled with errors, and do not know what you are talking about.

And if I am not mistaken I saw where you refer to me as Mr. Telemaque, I wish you would refer to me as what is sign below, or simple Son, that is what I am call by everyone in the village, from the day I was born to now.

I am second class you see, and I do not wish to change that!

        I am:

Francisco, when did “teaching kids to take care of the school and their civic responsibilities” become an ignorant statement? I deliberately refused to comment on the first story and here I am supporting the repair of the school and I am subjected to your verbal abuse.

For your information, kids enter secondary school at 11-12 years. Gifted ones who skipped classes may enter at 10. Remember also that this is a comprehensive school with a technical wing. They teach Auto Mechanics, Home Economics, Computer Technology and very soon the Electricity and Wood Work shops should be operational.

The government is currently spending over one million dollars for maintenance, and that does not include the classroom windows. Wouldn’t it be killing two birds with one stone if the kids are involved in the maintenance? That’s an internship program right there at the school. It’s called hands on, Francisco. But am I surprise getting a lecture on ignorance from you? You are most suited for that job.

But you are right, Francisco. High school kids from Wesley will not damage their school. Unlike PSS students who cause bodily harm to Castle Bruce students, Wesley students are exceptional. Had it not been for limitation in space I would have told you about the most beautiful school in Dominica. It was a gift from the Canadian government of PM Pierre Trudeau. To cut it short, the entire western side of the 2 storey and 3 storey sections had glass panels from ceiling to floor. The desk and bench combo were on wheels (casters). Need I say any more. That school was in my community of Grand Bay as part of a 5 school gift package to the people of Dominica and were located at Castle Bruce, La Plaine, Goodwill, Vieille Case and Grand Bay. So Francisco, do not choke on your vomit.

Come on Francisco, make up your mind. Is it North East Comprehensive School or St. Andrews High School? Do students damage furniture or not? Am I ignorant or is it you? Do the kids go to school drunk or were you drunk before your sister straighten you up? Is the school 12 years old or 6 or less?

You see, Francisco, I was trying to encourage and uplift, resulting in you spewing vomit on this blog. Now you resort to degrading the students of Wesley by calling them drunks instead of humbly admitting to your error and ignorance. What goes around …… But it didn’t take long to vindicate me. Do not choke on your vomit.
