Chief Youth Development Officer John Roach has made a plea for the agricultural sector to be given greater prominence.
In an interview with DNO following the 2013 Computer Literacy Job Attachment briefing, Roach said agriculture should be made more attractive to the country’s youth.
“In Dominica I find there needs to be a little more emphasis on our Agriculture,” he stated. “And I don’t think there is a notion that the young people are not interested in Agriculture but I think the youth is interested in Agriculture but you must really design the program in such a way that will appeal to them.”
Roach said according to a review from the from the briefing, participants thought social skills were the most beneficial.
“They also spoke very highly of the social skills … it boosted their self esteem, self confidence, was very beneficial to them more than even the computer skills at their place of attachment,” he said.
The Youth Development Division has introduced a new Agana program which is currently underway in the Marigot and Roseau districts.
The program is done in collaboration with USAID, Partners of the Americas and the Youth Development Division.
Fifty computer literacy and six computer maintenance students, who were on temporary job placements, spoke about their place of attachment, experiences obtained and their future plans.
Well said Roach
Very true…Everyone cannot be employed in an office or driving bus.
Mr.walters, dapex, etc need to work together and do more alot more and not just build feeder roads because even if road build and product not selling, its of no use.
Dominica have so much potential, its a shame what happened to our industry.
“In Dominica I find there needs to be a little more emphasis on our Agriculture,” he stated. “And I don’t think there is a notion that the young people are not interested in Agriculture but I think the youth is interested in Agriculture but you must really design the program in such a way that will appeal to them.”
My question is…. WHO IS THE YOU THAT HAVE TO DESIGN THE PROGRAM???
We always play blame games, you Mr. Roach as a Youth Personnel must commence the design of that attractive program, there is nobody else so get on with it man!!!!!!
There is a problem with the STIGMA that exist in the farming industry, and adding pain to this injury FARMERS do not live up to standard, they always cry poor, have the worst wardrobe, worse vehicle and worse houses…. they potray hard work and no money…. youth cannot find that attractive…
If farmers show they are making money and that the hard work pays off then yes…..
