New DSC students gets warning about illusion of truth on internet

Lambert spoke at the start of DSC’s Orientation Week

Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Dominica State College (DSC), Dr. Ian Lambert, has warned incoming students of the College of the illusion of truth on the internet and about believing everything that they read there.

His caution came during a ceremony to launch the school’s Orientation Week 2017, which began on Monday at the campus in Stock Farm.

Lambert said that notwithstanding the fact that almost every single one of the student present at the opening ceremony has a cell phone which makes information more easily accessible, it still continues to create an illusion of the truth.

“If I had to do a survey or a check, there is a cell phone, possibly in every one of your pockets, which means, therefore, we all have access to more information than at any time in human history. We have that information at the touch of a button. But ironically, the flood of information, by and large, has not made us any more discerning of the truth,” he said.

He added that in certain instances, the availability of any and every piece of information has caused people to be “even more confidence in our ignorance” and only rely on whatever Google says.

“In some ways and in some quarters it has made us even more confident in our ignorance. We assume that whatever on the web is true and in some cases to get a degree, we simply go to Google University and whatever we see there and read there, again we assume it is true, you will learn the difference,” he stated.

He remarked however that despite the fact that “opinions masquerade as facts” and the “widest conspiracy theories are now taken for gospel,” the students have come to DSC for a reason, which is to make a change, and he trusts that the institution will provide “tremendous assistance” towards the students discerning the truth from the lie.

That’s rich from a man who taught me that I am spinning around at 1000 miles an hour on a globe earth that is spinning at a far greater speed around the sun, which is spinning around like crazy in a universe that is spinning around…etc. :)

That we we came from monkeys despite there being records or monkey that can talk :).

That the universe came from a big bang and that there was nothing before the bang??

    Really funny!!!

The truth is that the earth is flat, space is fake, we are the supreme being on earth and guess what, GOD created the earth and us.

Discerning the truth from a lie has always plagued us since our existence on this planet, it’s an ongoing daily battle we are faced with living on this planet called Earth, the discernment of the truth from a lie is our liberation and freedom. It is a fallacy to believe that institutions of higher learning are providing the tools necessary to assist in discerning the truth from a lie.

This is a political statement dressed up as academic deference. What the state college needs to do, is create a learning environment where students and entrepreneurs can hone their ideas and turn them into practical tangible outputs. We boast of our flora and fauna however, what linkages do we have with research labs to find cures for modern diseases? This is the direction that the DSC should be aiming for. Dr. Lambert sounds like one of those old-time Dominicans from the 1950s.

I can read between the innuendos. Seems like everyone has to take an oath of allegiance some way, some how..

Iam glad this statement was made. I experieced it. One has to be very careful even with google. Students please be careful with info u get on the net. It is not always accurate.

Sorry, but I’ve lost the plot of the Dr. Lambert’s reasoning. The same could be said about the introduction of the printing press hundreds of years ago.

The discerning student will make his or her own choices and not be told by the DSC what they can – or cannot – agree to, consent to or debate.

What exactly is this man trying to say? As there has always been good and evil. There was never a given time everything we read was of credible authenticity. College students should be smart enough to decipher between credible and non- credible news.

Big Banan I am guessing he saw the need to tell them because of the level of gullibility he has noticed among them? Why are you against him cautioning them? Do you spread fake news too?

The most important instution in the country is the dominica state college , a must required course is exporting water to the world . Our water is going to waste and the world needs it, we must learn to own it , sell it and bring the money back home to develop our country . We can no longer teach our young people how to be come civil servants . We must train them to own. The Dean and president in on the right track , we cannot keep teaching people to beg for jobs we have to teach them how to be job creators , the government alone cannot solve all problems .

Dominica state college is the only instution to save dominica . Teach students to control the most important resources in the world , water , and we have it going to waste . No other subject is as important as ownership of our water , we should not be poor begging for crumbs . Teach students they must own the factories and boats to deliver the water . We can no longer teach our young people to be civil servants and beggers, we are in charge now the British have left . Every body is either red or blue fighting over nothing , and you see the same pattern all over the caribean and Africa . It’s the government fault they are not helping me. After the British gave us independence we are still begging for someone to save us. We better learn to think and save our selves . I have to command the Dean and president of the college they are on the right path, water compaines that’s the way to go to save us from constant begging and poverty .

While it’s tempting to dismiss this as being obvious, so many people seem so eager to believe the most ridiculous things that I suppose it’s always worth a reminder!
