Newtown Primary School to be opened for new academic year

“Slight changes” has caused a delay in the completion date of the new Newtown Primary School, Prime Minister Roosevelt has said, but the establishment will be opened in time for the new academic year in September.

In March of this year, Education Minister Petter Saint Jean promised that the EC$ 6.8-million facility will be completed by the end of July.

But earlier this week, the Prime Minister said changes the government wanted have delayed the completion date.

“There have been some slight changes in regards to the completion date for the school because the government had asked for certain changes to be made to the design,” Skerrit said.

He stated that although the changes were slight, they did have an impact on the project.

“The idea is to have the school functioning by September,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister noted that the Ministry of Education is already in the process of acquiring furniture and other necessary items to ensure that once the school is completed, they will be available for students to move in.

The school is described as a “gift” from the Government of China to Dominica which the Prime Minister said “we are very grateful for…”

“When you compare where the students used to be and what they are receiving, our hope is that it will enhance learning,” he said.

Upon completion, the school will have a total of 14 classrooms, labs for science lessons and the performing arts, an auditorium as well as an elevator to cater for students with disabilities.

The contract for the school was signed on October 9, 2013.

For those of you who leave over seas takes every thing very serious. You understand very little about any thing. What do we give China, Europe, or America. What help do they want from us besides chip labour to work in their factories. The Americans ask the British for one thing give me Liberty or death. Why do people people have to give us every thing. How do you call that one sided giving. We should fall flat on our faces pick our selves up and some day we will do for our selves like the chinese do. Why do our leaders beg because we are a bunch of Drunckards who refuse to work. Call it what you want when are we going to take care of our selves and family’s. Governments should not be in the business taking care of us. They should be limited in our lives. They are not good at running busineses the private sector is better

Thank you China, and thank you PM for “begging” on our behalf. Education is of great importance to a people.

You compliment and then you use a debasing word. I do not know why some of you call it “begging”. It is also narrow-minded, insulting and low to use this word to your PM.
Traveling and asking for badly needed help is not begging. Those who offer it and provide it know very well it is not begging. They do not look upon it as that.
All governments travel to request help and for investors. They make their country known and that it is open for investments. Why do some D/cans find it necessary to say it is begging?
We who reside abroad and that is especially the broad-minded West Indians of all never view the government in the country they reside in as begging. These governments do a lot of traveling, for the benefit of their country.
I am informing those of you who use this word to cease doing so. Furthermore, the money is for the benefit of Dominica in general, nationals benefit.
All must be grateful to the PM and to the benefactors of these projects as China.

How much was spent on elections. Five schools could have been built with that kind of money.
