Newtown to get modern primary school

The Education Minister Peter St. Jean and MP George at the site of the new school

Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau South Constituency Ambrose George has promised a new “modern” primary school for Newtown.

“We are delighted in the sense that we are going to receive a modern school,” George said during a recent visit to the proposed site of the new place of learning.

The new institution is to be constructed through grant funds provided by the Chinese government.

According to George the school will contain three levels. “The designs make provision for three levels: the ground level, a first floor and a second floor. The components of those floors will include science labs, cafeteria, an auditorium, office space for principal and vice principal, space for staff of the school, and approximately twelve classrooms,” George pointed out. “The school, when complete, will also have several amenities such as an art room and a computer room.”

The new Newtown Primary School will also make provision for physically challenged children, according to George.

He said the new school will also accomodate more students than the one that now exists. “I think there are over 200 students at the present school. The new school will make provisions for an increase in the number of students attending that school,” George noted.

Preliminary work has already been done in preparation for actual construction which George said, will begin at the end of this year.

Speak of learning environment, Newtown is a community plagued by high unemployment and drug which could have been helped through the necessary jobs, which are given to the chinese to construct this school. tell me how can our people relate to something which is design and built by and for a different culture. this does not help the culture of poverty which plagues this community, in fact it helps to reinforce it, since people are treated as non-existent. this is work which can be done by the men of this and neighboring communities. it’s about time the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica start showing interest in it’s citizen and their development as a society!

Are you trying to tell me employ unskilled people who are unwilling to work to build the school. Have you any idea how difficult it is to get those guys to work. I challenge to pass and try then publish your results. No bars are set up where Chinese work and they work night and day.

B_Arch: «tell me how can our people relate to something which is design and built by and for a different culture.»

Well, even if we were to accept your logic, there remains a fat question. How do you know that the new design was done «by and for a different culture»? The article does not say so. Have you seen the design? Do you know the process involved in getting the designs done?

Additionally, the government has spent large sums doing preliminary work there. I know so because this story has been in the news. Do you know who did this preliminary work? Do your research before spewing orgasmic and ill-informed comments here. Here is a hint: It certainly was not a foreign company.

      Stop the ignorance.

Bearing in mind that this story has already been published some months ago. It been so many years that things such as water system, road rehabilitation, remodelling of school, assistance for home repairs etc has been promised. I believe the republishing of this story is because of the water system that was recently “opened” in Morne Bruce, not really for the residents but for the Cruise ship passengers, just to SAY Ambrose doing things.

But if you ask any person from the area they will tell you is his “followers – Friendship Crew” that getting all the benefits. Who have cleaning business, gangs on the road, etc, etc, etc.

Resident: «But if you ask any person from the area they will tell you is his “followers – Friendship Crew” that getting all the benefits. Who have cleaning business, gangs on the road, etc, etc, etc.»

Do you really believe this, Resident? ACE Engineering built the water tank. Is Ace Engineering part of Hon. George’s «followers – Friendship Crew»? The preliminary works on the Newtown School site, also done by a member of that crew?

Lol, Resident! Stop spreading untruths. In other words…lass manti!

Good job Mr. George! Leaders who love the future of their country and especially those they represent in cabinet, should see education as a must and as a result, should ensure that they give children a place that is conducive to learning. So congrats to the people of Newtown!

This being said, let me ask the Hon PM, who is minister of Finance, and Palrep of the Viellecase costituency, of which Thibaud is part of; when will he build the school in Thibaud?

In 2005, after a trip from Lybia, the PM annouced on radio that he got $ 1 million dollars from Lybia for the construction of a new school in Thibaud. As the 2005 elections got closer and Skeritt realized he could win his seat without Thibaud, he went ahead and took the said money to build a school in Sansoveir instead, where he was losing. Since then he has totally ignored the people of Thibaud and really continues to reward them with bitterness.

For many years now the people of Thibaud were forced to have their children shoved in a very small, very hot, and a building that is just not conducive to learning. I refer to it as a small pigpen.

Though I am not from Thibaud, I feel for them because the old school building meant everything for the people. It was where their children where schooled, their hurricane shelter, community hall, and offcourse, a place for village feasts and dance was held. Under Skerrit that’s gone!

I cannot understand why Thibaud people still shouting, “Labour power!” Labour and Skerritt have certainly hurt them.

The old building which was built by the late E.O Leblanc, and recieved timely repairs from previous administrations, was totally abandoned by Mr. Skeritt until he closed it over five years ago. Somehow he convinced the people that they do not need a big building for some 35 children. However, his village school of Viellecase has no more than 45 children and yet he continues to take care of them.
Is the palrep punishing Thibaud for their past sin for which he is now taking revenge? plese tell the people.

Them fellars really brite,we have heard of the building of this school for years. Is it a coincidence that they chose this time to build the school which will be completed just about election time and hope all the criticisms of the bad roads especially in Kings Hill and the lack of representation of the New Town constituency for approximately three years will just go away. I hope Ambrose will have many people of the New Town constituency employed on this project. I hope that is isn’t another case of Chinese fund,Chinese workers.Expect a lot of action by Skerrit and the DLP Government during the next fifteen months.

I see that the goal post keeps shifting. We have been hearing about this for the longest time. Recently we were told that construction work would begin in August or upon completion of the wall. The wall has been completed months now and the project has been halted. This I must say as a concerned parent and member of the new town community is overly disappointing. What this means is that our children will go back to school in the same deplorable conditions. The classrooms are severely affected by the dust which accumulates and can hardly be swept out of the classroom adequately. More and more we are find children are I’ll because of some of the conditions at the school. This is just pure nonsense. Our children cannot learn in this environment. Please stop treating our chilsren this way. This new school has been coming for much to long.

Why is it only now that we are hearing from Mr. George about the school. All efforts on his part has failed. The PTA Executive met with Mr. St. Jean to discuss the commencement of the new school and was given a committment that it would begin during the summer and completed just around September/October 2012. Why do we have to be informed that it will begin at the end of the year through DNO. Has this contradicting informaiton reached the Principal or the PTA President. Such disrespect on behalf of the Ministry of Education. We the parents will not sit idle by and let our children continue to suffer when better can be done. Action will have to be taken.
