Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has announced that all schools in Dominica will remain closed until Monday as the island assess the effects of the passage of Tropical Storm Matthew.
He also said everyone should report to work as normal on Thursday but has called on all Dominicans to move around with caution and care.
“Cabinet has taken a decision this morning to close school or to have schools remain closed up until Monday,” he said on state-owned DBS Radio. “So there will be no school on Friday tomorrow, and no school today, so the students will return to school on Monday morning by which time we expect everything to be certainly close to back to normal.”
He said this is being done as a precautionary measure.
“As you know we are still grappling with the effect of Tropical Storm Erika and of course the soil is saturated,” the Prime Minister noted. “We don’t want to have a situation where we have our children at school and the after effects of the rain manifests themselves and our student will find themselves in difficulties.”
He said the rest of the population must move around with an abundance of caution.
“We have received tremendous amount of rain and also wind,” he noted. “Therefore, we are asking for people to be cautious and careful as they move around dong their own business because of the level of saturation which the soil has one can expect land slippages, erosions, landslides, mudslides and the like.”
Skerrit pointed out that there are reports of fallen trees and land slippages in some parts of the island which will all be taken care of when operators receive the all clear signal.
Notwithstanding, he noted that everyone else should report to work.
“There will be work today for everybody in the country, so people are to report to their workplaces” he noted
The Prime Minister said that weather situation will be monitored although a Tropical Storm Warning for Dominica has been discontinued.
“Some parts of the country there is still rain,” he said. “As I said, based on the advice received, we will continue to see rain for the course of the day.”
Where is SKERRITT!!!!!!!! I am told that this broadcasts are being made from New York where he still is. If that is the case, this man is more of a disgrace than is imaginable!
So, you need him sometimes?? I don’t at all.
Allu parents have jokes eh
We need to institute community parenting!
So wait a while school is a babysitting service? For 2-3 days parents cannot make arrangements for their children? Interesting!
Yes, it is.
lol.. I cant stop laughing.. let me spoon feed allu.. I have no problem in the children staying home for safety reasons.. what am saying is when I have to go to work and the day care is closed what should I do? parents should be alone to stay home with their children.. and @ shay triple k and fest not for me.. Its for u too fast Dominicans
Mr. Pm is world Creole Music Festival still on? My friend told me she wants to come down but is forced to wait until the last minute to buy tickets because you so like to shut down the country uselessly.
Does all schools include Ross, All Saints and Dominica State College?
By the way Friday was already a day off for teachers in Government Schools. It seemed that some patents made children for schh9ls..
But what is wrong with these parents eh smh..
Count our Blessings.
The parents asking what to do with their children, what would you do with your child who had a high fever? Do the same with them in this emergency. Think about your children safety. Would you send your child to school if the child got up one morning covered with chicken pox?
As working parents we know it is sometimes difficult making alternate arrangements but we cannot put that on the backs of Government? Maybe we should be friends with our neighbours and not allow politics to interfere with our relationships with families and friends, so we can be there for each other when the need arrives. Something to think about.
Schools are not for babysitting purposes. I know we are happy when our child is old enough to go to school and we have free time on our hands but that is not how we should be looking at our schools.
The government is doing its part, parents must do theirs. Remember to give Thanks to The Lord for sparing us?
Yes schools are. That is why the majority of them who send their children to public schools are uninvolved. Feed them…maybe, clothe them….not properly and send them…….school is a cresh for some of them…not a learning institution
Sound decision. We have to err on the side of caution in situations like this. I applaud the government for the proactive way in dealing with the situation. Nuff respect!!
Amen Pm very pro active
Sure that all safe and dandy… but what about the parents eh.. who will watch the kids? and if we leave them home alone allu will call welfare.. hmm
So when your children on school holidays and you have to go work, do you have someone looking after the children. Then what is the difference now.
well bring dem work with you sacweh sot. everything for all you is politics.when teachers go for their pay who staying home with them?way to go prime minister
It is your responsibility to work that part out; i acknowledge it poses an inconvenience but one needs to just try their best.

Leave them with the same person you does leave them with when you going carnival, creole fest, creole in the park, titiwi fest, pork fest, triple kay jam and all d rest. lol Really can’t please everybody. smh
