The National Youth Council (NYC) of Dominica now has a new office.
The new office located on Kennedy Avenue in Roseau is being described as a more ideal environment to conduct the work of the NYC.
“Coming in to the NYC Executive in July 2013 the executive was of the view that the present office was not conducive to exercising the mandate of the council and as such they felt that it was necessary to move forward towards to what would be a more ideal environment to conduct of the work of the NYC,” President of the NYC, Jahisiah Benoit said while addressing the official office opening ceremony held at the new office on Wednesday.
Benoit continued, “Back in 2013 the NYC, the Dominica Youth Business Trust and the Junior Achievement Program were searching feverishly for a place that we can call home and looking beyond which is the standard procedure where persons go individually we were looking to pull our resources to come together and have a joint office.”
He revealed that the Dominica Youth Business Trust will soon will be relocated, “just one floor above us so that we can continue to work in close partnership with them.”
Benoit further revealed that the Executive of the NYC is moving forward quickly in entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Junior Achievement Dominica so it could conduct and execute it services from the office of the NYC.
He stated further that the opening ceremony has been a very touching moment for him.
“This is a touching moment even for me because we have worked so hard,” he said.
According to him, the NYC will stand committed to continue to do the work to the best of their ability with the limited resources that is available.
Minister of Culture, Youth, Sports and Constituency Development, Justina Charles who delivered the feature address at the function, said the President of the NYC sent a document to establish partnership with the central government and there were three main activities that he wanted to accomplish, with the first being the relocation of the NYC’s office.
“And so we are happy that today we are realizing the achievements of that relocation.” she explained. “So this is government’s first commitment to the three ideas that you forwarded it us and definitely we will remain committed to all. We are committed to assisting with payment of the office and As I said to Mr. Benoit as the Minister responsible I will follow through to ensure that payments are made for the office space.”
Charles stated that she is impressed with the activities and involvement of the young people in Dominica.
“There are many more positive activities among our young people than the few that are promoted or highlighted or that get the sensation that is usually given,” she stated. “But I want to commend the young people for the level of work that you are doing in all spheres of our development.”
Charles went on to say that the NYC has also been instrumental in developing leaders, “And we are seeing the present National Youth Council within that body that we can identify leaders and so your president was made Senator and has a voice on your behalf in Parliament.”
She also commended the staff and President of the NYC for the tremendous work that they have been doing over the past years.
The NYCD also launched its new website today to reach out to the youth in Dominica.

Another rented office? Its the second time on Kennedy Avenue for the NYC. At least the present President should lobby his Government to Give the Youth a piece of land and fund a project where the NYC can own its office. The building could be multi-purpose; with training facility dormitories, recreation etc.
Skerro if you really love the youth……..
The NYC does in fact have plans to ask the government for land but towards an agricultural/ horticultural enterprise. The NYC stands for sustainable development, so creating continuous income is the goal. While owning office space may indeed be a good idea, it isn’t a top priority for now.
The National Youth Council is quickly being transformed into the Youth Arm of the Dominica Labour Party and this is shameful. Jaisaih Benoit cannot be the president of the NYC and at the same time be a Labour Party Senator. It is morally and ethically wrong.
The NYC has to represent the interest of all young people and Benoit’s allegiance to the ruling party compromises the impartiality of the NYC and is clearly a conflict of interest.
Yes NYC will get all the perks from government but at the expense of its independence. Benoit should move to lead the LYO and allow non political animals take charge of the NYC.
I hope that the independent youth will mobilize to get him out in the next election if he does not do so voluntarily. It’s shameful and NYC does not deserve any compliments for being used by the government in such a nasty political game. Stand up young people and take back your organization from these political pimps. This is nothing less than pimping the youth.
I’m…
Where is this located??????
Kennedy Avenue. The old Jays book store building
The youth arm of the DLP and the CPC, the communist party of China. For “moulding” our children while they are still young and impressionable. If my eyes do not deceive me I see a couple of red shirts on the verandah already. Who is paying for running that office?
oh lord! now persons can’t wear red shirts. i think Mr. Benoit is continuing to prove his loyalty to the youth of Dominica. we are talented individuals and with proper motivation i believe we can become not only what society would want us to be but what we aspire for ourselves
isn’t red still just a colour. papa let me stop wear red and blue clothes eh!
Don’t be naive brother. Try and wear a blue shirt at your next labour rally and tell them that it is nothing, it is your personal choice, that blue is your favourite colour. Everything has a symbol and a meaning, makes a statement and creates an impression. Try to go to church next time and wear a swimsuit and tell them it is only a garment and that God created people naked after all!
