NYCD tackles improper garbage disposal

Construction of garbage receptacles has commenced in Salisbury and two other locations on the west coast in a project spearheaded by the National Youth Council of Dominica (NYCD) as part of efforts to curb improper garbage disposal in Dominica.

The NYCD says the aim of the project dubbed “Youth: We Keep It Clean” is to construct some 50 garbage receptacles around the island.

“These will serve as proper storage for garbage until collected by the relevant authorities on stipulated days, as well as to deter motorists and residents alike from wantonly dumping garbage, particularly along the island’s highways,” the NYCD said.

On Saturday, April 13th, 2013, the NYCD along with the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation, Salisbury Enhancement Committee, Coulibistrie Youth Group, Salisbury Young Achievers and the Parliamentary Representative for Salisbury, Hector John, gathered to tackle the unsightly garbage and to lay the foundation for the first two receptacles.

The NYCD is now calling on residents to be mindful of the way garbage is disposed and its impact on the environment. “The National Youth Council of Dominica urges all concerned to therefore make proper use of these garbage receptacles and to practice proper garbage disposal,” the council stated in a release.

In the coming months, the NYCD is expected to begin construction of more receptacles in the communities of Silver Lake and Soufriere/Scotts Head.

“We invite business houses and residents concerned to lend support when the “Youth: We Keep It Clean” initiative comes to your respective communities,” the NYCD said.

This is just going to encourage rats and more bugs, and we will have a big problem with Leptospirosis. This is also some form of nastiness, with no self pride to their property or some one else.

The should search the garbage and it they find some evidence of the culprit or culprits, charge them a fine. This is not acceptable. Remember we want tourists to come to Dominica. Lets be clean.

NYCD, you are doing great guys. Such small things help to transform Dominica into better place. If you do such project constantly you will sooner or later indoctrinate into brains of all Dominicans that only dirty pigs can drop their litter everywhere. I believe that such small things are much more effective and practical than non-sense / pseudo-intelligent demagogic of public officials etc…Believe or not but proper garbage disposal will help tourism much better than putting some ugly stall into supermarket in Martinique and later publish stupid articles about Dominica tourism development…Respect, guys!

We understand that it is difficult to access Castle Bruce right now because of the road collapse near Ponr Casse. Please, be patient and meanwhile help by limiting the amount of trash for disposal

Then follow the initiative of the NYCD and organise a garbage receptacle the same until the garbage truck comes. We have to help ourselves sometimes you know. Remember when we use to make compost heaps at school and even the back of our house? Once upon a time we use to separate the garbage before this idea was introduced to us a new thing? I remember my mom using the milk tins as flower pots. The plastic bags she would use to store meat in the fridge or use when selling provisions or charcoal to people. She would use the empty clorox bottle to carry water to wet the plants. These days we call the same thing reduce, re-use, recycle. Burn old clothes that can’t be donated or store some of them for when the heavy rains come and she don’t want us to dirty her modern mat with mud. So much we can to keep things simple and smelling good in our environment we suddenly become dependent on the $20 rubbish collection truck. TRY SOME OF THE PASSED METHODS AND SEE HOW WE CAN SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT. AGREED
