I visited the St. Luke’s school on two occasions and was spellbound by the oasis of learning I found hidden from public view. The school’s environment is learning-provoking; the teachers’ classrooms are teeming with learning supporting activities, much more than any other school I visited, and the students appeared to be on task and learning in their fun environment.

In fact, when I went home, I couldn’t stop talking about the school and told my gf, whenever, we have a child of primary-school age, we are sending that child to St. Luke’s Primary-no question asked and cost doesn’t matter. If we have to become Catholics for my child to enter that school, we will. That’s the impact the school had on me as an educator. So, Sister Anita, you and your teachers deserve all your accolades. It’s visionaries like you that can create such an pasture of learning.

Congrats to the MOE for the this activity to recognise teachers. But some of us do havr to advertise our friendship with collegues or people whilst speaking. I heard the man giving the vote of thanks thanking people and even saying “so and name………my friend” in r professional capacity it do have dat. If you are in a position you have to be fair and transparent no friend there

NOT A SINGLE SUSPENSION IN A TERM. when we think of the news. that is something.

I enjoyed everything in this article until I read the last two words “School environment” in the last paragraph, which almost caused me to vomit.

How could the ministry of education award schools for good environment and they allowed the Prime Minister to put the children of Thibaud in this kind of environment? Do you expect them to compete with other schools mr. PM?

The Prime minister, who is the palrep, placed the children of Thibaud in a fowl cage for over two years now, where the environment is not conducive to learning, good health, and happiness all in the name of politics. The two classrooms are no bigger than 10×10 with about 15 students per room plus desks.
The ministry of heath should be ashamed of themselves for awarding schools for environment, when they know that through their politics they have defeated other schools out of competion.

If I do not pay my children school fees in the U.S, the school sends notice of suspension. It would be unfair for the other students who pay their dues. You want your child to go to a good school then you have to pay, except you get a sponsor. I am not sure for D/ca but the fees we pay covers the teachers salary, books etc.

sister antina should have never gotten that award…how can a principle get best priniciple of the year, when she dont have a good relationship with her staff, she is bias toward the less fortunate in the school, the acardemic standered has drop dramastical and so have the number of students attending there now from the time she came….she dont have a good relationship with most of the parents…so how can this happen. to give a someone principle of the year u have to look at that…when skerrit said that u should not send a child hope even if the child cannot pay the school fee… she is one of them that has to take note and remember why the school was built in the fist place….the nuns that built the school maybe turning in there grave because of her, cause she turn everything upside down in the school and right now is not cateering for the childlen of the parish of st.luck..

    • St. Luke Parent
      October 5, 2012

You must be an idiot….I recently transferred my son to St. Luke’s and it is the best thing I’ve done. Have you been to St. Luke’s or talk to the teachers? I go there twice a day to drop off my son and pick him up and the school environment is the best. All because of Sister Anita.

I was a father’s meeting last week at the school and Sister Anita is trying her best to get the fathers involved and she explained how hard it is to even get mothers involved….some don’t want to pay the school fees…gov’t pays the teachers but the school have to pay for everything else, from electricity to water to maintenance. And she is trying her best to get the money to do that.

So I get really angry when I read your ignorant comment. I am sure you must be one of the parents who do not want to pay your school fee and expect everything free.

St. Luke’s is the best…my son is learning so much.

Thanks God for Sister Anita. Hope she stays there as long as possible.

“Anomynous” Shame on you – pay your child school fees first before the BB and flat screen. The PM said not to send all you home – but who will pay the fees – I hope is not Government. We must let paretns take up their reponsiblities and stop looking for hand out to do everything.

If all you eh pay school fees how will the school run. So stop that ignorance – Stop hating the nun and pay your child fees for Christ sake.
PM please take that back – parents will not want to pay school fees – its not policy so that should be ignored.

You seem to have something with Sister she is an excellent Principal, she know you inside out and you do like that. Pay your child school fess and stop that.

All pure sour grapes. Blame your self for being transferred. Is people like you that was trying to put problem in the school, village etc. You playing nice with them when you in the school and then as they turn their backs you stabbing them. You were not doing your work now you running your jaw. Shame on the PM to make such a statement so when the parents dont pay the school fees how the school going to maintain itself. You disgust me. I hope you do a better job where you are.

Be quiet…. I don’t know where you get your info from. Sr Anita is well loved by staff, parents students,,, Is people like you who are always negative. The school doesn’t run on air. Those who claim to be poor find money for everything except their childrens’ education. Sell the BB and pay tour school fee.I bet you don’t participate in any functions at school..Look at all the various new programs which Sr Anita implemented at the school. Bravo Sister Anita. Miss Lavinier, this came as no surprise, maybe a bit late, but better late than never. And Miss Laurent, old faithful, it was time.

For those who question the St Luke’s school; all your questions will be answered if you take a visit to the school. It’s indeed a model school.
As for CHS, the school of my alma mater; indeed “EFFORT CONQUERS ALL!

Work with your children, teachers and your school so that they will shine and stand out next time.

I would like to throw out a challenge to DNO. Consider it DNO’s contribution to the recognition of these outstanding individuals. Do a story on these outstanding principals and another on the teachers. Go to thier schools and/or class rooms and share with the world what makes them outstanding. Share thier efforts with us so we can really see why they deserve special recognition.

I went to the CHS under the leadership of Mrs. Leevy but was taught by Mrs. Dublin and as a teacher she was excellent. Through my work i have visited the St. Luke’s Primary school and trust me anyone visiting the school after being their for 10 minutes with only a small fraction of that being in the presence of Sr. Anita would understand why she is deserving of such an award.

I have also met a few of the other distinguished award reciepients and i think it would be an excellent idea to give Dominicans and indeed your viewing audience a clearer picture on what makes these individuals worthy of the recognition they received.

Show us in pictures, share the views of thier students and peers….

we congratulate the Convent High School and St. Luke’s School for work well done. They have been consistent over the years. However we need to recognise the schools that have been working hard such as the Goodwill Primary School. We need to bear in mind the enabling environment for such schools. This school is over six hundred in population. It cannot be compared with a school such as Dosdane with less than 100 children as well as Roseau Primary. What are we really at? A Principal without a Secretary cannot be put in such bracket. Schools such as ST.Martins school, St. Mary’s Primary cannot be judged as those small schools. the magnitude of a big school is far different than a school school. While we feel that management of any institutition is based on leadership you cannot compare Astaphans with Flossie. Therefore i am as asking the Ministry of education to re-categorise the juding category. Congrats to the Ministry of Education for recognising excellent teachers of excellence but do this using the correct mechanism. As an aside, you need to work in your Government Schools to perform at the apex. Why are the Catholic Schools performing so well? They run their own business. Give your Government schools autonomy and you will get results. You should feel ashame that after paying the staff for these public schools you are always behind. check your Learning Advisors, Education Officers and m.O.E advisors. We have the potential to make the Government schools the best on island. Let’s do it because we can. The next time around it’s all the way with the Government schools.

You are so right. the Goodwill Primary School is doing very well. It provides for a holistic student. Why did Grandfond get the award for Sports. For the past 11 years this school has dominated the athletics. It has P.E as a time table subject. It has won the Football events over the past five years in either first or second place, beat most of the schools in athletic events for the past eleven years. The school offers table and lawn tennis, cricket, netball and basketball as part of its P.E curriculum as well as dominoes. Which school in Dominica has so much to offer? Please go back to the drawing board. Goodwill Primary has the most organised P.E Program in the Primary Schools. Please think again. GrandFond?????

Congrats to the winners but truly the principal of last year is DGS A. Jean jacques she was able to stand firm and demonstrate superb leadership amidst some staff inciting a revolution, student gross misbehaviour, lack of MOE support to aleviate her challenges but rather seekn a scape goat, planning a way forward for the institution without the need for two principals. And two sections and most importantly rally staff and students over (250) to attenpt cxc at the peak of USE no setting or streaming equal opportunity for all. Death of a dear teacher lack of enough counsellors and who can forget manage more students than there are people in most dominican communities on less than 2 acres of space and who can 4get the enormous media and police presence so she is the one and still was able to put an excellent graduation at which i received my pass into dgs hall of fame

It’s interesting how she managed to remain well compossed and dug her heels in the sand, ensuring that the best interest of the students stays at centre stage.

She is one of VERY FEW principals who has sought outside/expert assistence when students exibited gross antisocial behaviours characterised by violence and substance abuse. Through her persistence the ministry of education undertook a comprehensive school review exercise at the DGS. Many would have burried their heads in the sand wishing the problems away so as to give the false impression that all is well at their respective institutions, but NOT Alicia. Once something is wrong is she’s willing to confront the issue/s and explore solutions. She is very professional and motherly in her approach to leadership. On top of that this precious lady has NOT missed one day of work! Mam may the good Lord honour you for you excellent service as school principal.

Just as in building a house the foundation must be strong, so also is education. Early childhood Education is a structure thereby students, while learning, are given the opportunity to know and explore their environment. One may be wondering where this is coming from, so let me state that this stems from my being a past student of St.Luke’s School. It was that opportunity which was given to me which made me what I am today. The curiosity, the learning, the caring, the nurturing all helped in making me a recipient of A Master;s Degree in Early Childhood Eduction from a top College in New York. Thanks St.Luke’s School, for allowing me to now give back to students the way it was given to me. Way to go St. Luke’s School. Keep up the great work.

To the person questioning the Ministry of Education regarding St Luke’s School, I would like to inform you that there is no favour nothing going on between the St Luke’s School and the Ministry of Education

Out teachers at the St Luke’s School put student first, I have to inform you that I am what I am today and who I am today, with a well paid job, tax payers etc, because of my education I received at the St Luke’s School many years ago, before migrating to Canada

Yes I upgraded my Education, something everyone coming to Canada have to do, needless to say the pillar of my Education and my success today is due to the St Luke’s School

Well Ministry of Education please tell us what is going on in St Lukes Primary because this is the second straight year that their principal is receiving this award.

It’s not what is going on in the school but rather, what is this principal doing that is way above what the others are doing? Maybe the other principals should take a leaf from Sr. Anita or as articulated by Mrs. Alma John Cools-Lartigue, the featured speaker this morning.

Clearly you need to go back to school yourself if you cannot understand what has happened. To clarify – what is going on is excellence at school – developing the WHOLE child and not just the academic side. This results in well grounded, well adjusted, socially competent and above all very HAPPY children who will go a long way in life. Yes, take a long hard look – paying top dollar for long days stuck in a classroom does NOT mean you are getting top quality education that’s a definite. Way to go St Luke’s – you deserve it and more. Well done to Sr Annita, all her staff and all those in the community that give their support. Here’s to the 2013 awards!

The Ministry of education ha no autonomy over the St.Luke’s School. She gets funding for her school from outside source. She knows people that know people, that know people. Tell the M.O.E to put their money where their mouth is. Stop making the Government schools look ugly.
