PM urges parents to pay attention to children’s education

Skerrit said education is available to all

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has urged parents to make their children’s education a priority since access to it has been made easier by his administration.

Speaking in Atkinson over the weekend, Skerrit stated the Universal Secondary Education (USE) program has made education accessible to all students.

“Since 2005 every single child in Atkinson has a space at a secondary school,” he said. “We are also assisting with the transportation of the students, free transportation paid for by the government of Dominica and in many instances we provide uniform allowances and books to the students.”

He added that the onus is on parents to pay closer attention to the education of their children.

“That is one sure way of we helping families get out of poverty,” he stated. “We should not look for a second chance if we have opportunities now. If something was to happen to us and we need a second chance, then that’s fine but we should not be casual about our future, not pay attention to it and look for a second chance.”

The Prime Minister also called on parents to make education the centre of family life.

Well Mister PM since its only YOU the people listen to, it would be fitting that you publicly ask all parents to try their utmost to provide a safe environment for their children. Too many children are eating ABUSE in the land. Yes Education is key to getting them out of many situations, however, if ABUSE is part of their daily lives then education will be secondary or mean nothing to them if they cannot sit and concentrate beyond the ABUSE.

There is so much more to life than eduation, our PM knows that, our basic quality of life is key in every aspect of our growing up.

PROTECT OUR CHILDREN, THEY ARE THE COUNTRY’S TOMORROW.

……..in addition the biggest ABUSE is the red clinic a total disrespect to the many mothers, fathers, children of Dominica. The Abuse of public funds buying votes and giving cheap toilets.

Skerrit is in no position to talk about decency, rights of children and education of children.

Clean your house of abuse and then exit the government you and your government are a serious ability to Dominica`s families and their children . Poor role model

Poor Skeritt…even if you provide free education, create jobs for all, buy each an SUV, a boat, an airplane, provide free cell phone, free internet, free cable, free electricity, free groceries and build each a mansion on the hill…people will still call you greedy
I walk in the tarrish without shoes, with a half pencil, half book in plastic bag…..I did not learn because I spent more time eating bush food…coco chesh, guava, pacpoke, cashew, pwadoo, and playing hoop seway,( nuts La Baw) marble hole, skip, pickup, and hopscotch/morals…..

If someone advise people to educate their children is that a crime? ….

Try to keep your children away from d lawie and away from homme sue playing domino….

The only means available to make a living in Dominica today is the Red Clinic. You can tell children go to school, but they are aware that all they need to make a living under Labour is to play RED and learn how to beg.

One baby (his) was born in America but BOTH of Lennox Linton’s was born there as well and no one cares. Besides, hundreds of Dominican babies are born there each year of parents who claim to be “100% Dominican and proud, so what’s the hoopla about? Magway sa. Paix Bouche zor tan.

@Dominican in NY Get a grip and take your blow hole out of the sand! You trying to imply that you are in NY is not helping your argument. When was Lennox elected nah? Is he the prime-minister of Dominica? A serving, elected prime minister or president should show the highest level of patriotism, which means he should promote his country and show utmost confidence it’s flag and medical and education system. If its below par he needs to do something about it. Also, having his child being a born citizen of another country tells me (educated Dominican) clearly that the Dominican flag means very little to him. Straight up betrayal. If he does not want his child to be Dominican, then he needs to step down! Slap in all Dominicans face!
        There!

It was the UWP government that laid the foundation for universal secondary education by construction the Grand Bay Secondary School, Castle Bruce Secondary School, North East Comprehensive, Portsmouth school expansion and the first wing of the Dominica Grammar School. With the record of this government in construction activity with corruption and poor project management, those projects would never have finished. UWP will return to complete the development work they stated.

Mr. PM I support you 100 percent. I wish you also inform the Ministry of Education that they should make it better for teachers by appointing them too.

Mr. PM, while it is good to encourage parents to help their children get an education, it is also true that when we send our children to school we expect them to be safe and not be sexually abused by neither teachers, ministers, or any one who is supposed to be an adult. I am surprised that you and your government claim to care for our children but you all say nothing to address sexual abuse amongst our young children, which is so common these days. As PM, and minister for everything, we are calling on you to empower the welfare division to manage government welfare programs so that our young children will not have to go to ministers for assistance only to be used by them.

This another attempt by the prime minister to soften his image and to make him appear as a caring and responsible leader.
To some, this is too little, too late.
If he really wants to soften his image the prime minister should address the thorny issue of corruption and issue a “mea culpa”, to acknowledge his contribution to the problem of widespread corruption since he is seen as most responsible for this deteriorating menace.
He can begin by answering the questions the IPo commission put to him regarding his ownership of the Blair Court property. And after doing so, he should apologize to to the nation for the corrupt practices of his regime.
It’s only after he has come clean can the prime minister attempt to soften his image. Anything else he does prior to an open confession will be seen as rank hypocrisy which shall fall on death ears.
Having done so, he will then have the moral authority to talk about, honesty, integrity, playing by the rules, and all the other good stuff that good citizenship is made of. Nothing less will suffice.

sadly dominicans don’t discuss and vote on issues because they lack the ability to reason…

That’s a lie. UWP gave free text books. Parents are now struggling to buy books for their kids and when they can’t they resort to allowing their girls selling their bodies in exchange.

    • hmmm
      March 27, 2014

It always amazes me that parents complain that they cannot buy books but these are the same parents who send their children to America every summer, pay $400 for a carnival costume, pay $300 for Creole Festival tickets each year, and their kids all have tablets, iphones and kindle.

Please….everything in life is a choice.

Skerro i think when i speak i speak for all Dominicans when i say being prime minister of Dominica does not give you the authority to tell Dominicans how to live, what to wear, what music to listen to or remain silent?
Purpose of Govt is not to guide people it is to make people life better by enacting policies that will enhance there life by way of the economy. You can start by eliminating the 15% Vat, it would help alot, and you can continue by looking at repealing most of our laws, u see the less a Government intervenes in the daily lives of people the better the country, i can imagine toneee and alic not informing you on how a Govt should act afterall apart from Switzerland we have few Govt that operate this way. To much tyrannical Govt running our world.
    Thank you

I DO NOT EVEN LISTEN TO SKERRIT. I would just like him in all his fear to DO HIMSELF A FAVOUR AND TO call the election. He is already sued, this compounds all the other nightmares and diarrhoea that he is already having.

    • March 26, 2014

I know that their are those who will object but I agree with you as the PM of D’ica so he must take responsibility for the mess we are in today and it’s up to him to make sure that things are moving in a direction where all our peoples can benifit
A mind is a terrible thing to waste therefore we all are responsible for all of our children and not just a few .
