The Roseau South Central District Youth Council will host Poetry Under the Moon, at Peebles Park, on Tuesday, January 26, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
The event, showcasing youths’ talent, is meant to raise awareness of violence against women, children, and the elderly, according to member of the council, Malissa Jno Lewis.
“People should expect a wide variation of talents from young people because basically, it’s an event to raise the awareness to eliminate violence against women, children, and elderly… And we have young people going to express that theme through poetry, singing, maybe dancing, and other forms of talent,” she explained.
Although there will be planned performances from artistes such as Delroy Williams, Prisca Julien, Michelle Belle, Yakima Cuffy, Sting Ray, and Shawna Johnson, impromptu performances are both accepted and encouraged.
“Come to support the young people, and to take part as well— anybody that wants to take part,” Jno Lewis stated.
She also asked that patrons who plan to attend to wear orange (the colour used in the campaign against Gender-Based Violence) in support of the event.
“We want people to come and support us, and they should wear something orange if they can,” she stated.
The event, originally carded for Monday, January 25, was moved to the aforementioned date to allow for more employed persons to attend, and will also mark the two-year anniversary of the organization.
“On the 25th of every month, Orange Day is celebrated, so we have it on the 26th… because I think the 25th is Monday, and then people leave work at 5:00[pm]; so we wanted to do it the Tuesday,” Jno Lewis explained. “The Monday is our second anniversary, like, for the council—the 25th of January. So, we are celebrating Orange Day, and we are also celebrating our anniversary as well.”
