The finals of the 2013 DBS Radio/Courts Sponsored Reading Competition is slated for Friday 12th July, 2013 and according to coordinator Felix Henderson the competition has been meeting its objective which is encourage students to read.

“Children want to read more because they want to be a part of the competition,” he told DNO “We try to get attractive prizes to motivate them to want to read. Also they want to be there because it is a challenge for them and it encourages parents to read with their children and to support their children.”

He noted that very often the students who participate in the competition go on to succeed academically.

Henderson drew reference to the 2013 Island Scholar, Louis Riviere, who was once a participant of the DBS Reading Competition.

Henderson added that this year a few changes were made to ensure that the competition remains exciting.

“We are planting seeds for the good of the country …. so this competition is definitely one that will last since reading is so important,” Henderson stated. “Through this competition we have assisted the boys in Dominica and encouraged them to read and enjoy reading.”

This year’s finalists are Hananel Valerie of Christian Union Primary, Merkayla John Baptiste of Convent Prep, Mallet Marie Pioneer Prep, Celine Lewis St. Luke’s Primary, Sherdina Antoine Petite Savanne Primary, Mia Bruno St. Joseph Primary School, Shanda Francis Lighthouse Christian Academy, Tia Letang Ebenezer SDA Primary, Grace Vidal Coulibistrie Primary, and Annicia Coipel St. Martin’s Primary.

The final round is expected to begin at 2:30 pm at the Arawak House of Culture.
