Astelle Lockhart says training is important to RCP

A two-day joint training workshop for Roving Caregivers aimed at giving stakeholders more training took off on Thursday morning.

The workshop is being funded by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).

Roving Caregivers Project(RCP) Manager, Austelle Lockhart, said the workshop is in response  to caregivers who requested additional training.

According to him a PAHO consultant has recommended that the training of nurses and Rovers should focus on child development and actions have to be agreed upon if a developmental delay is detected in a child.

“Training has remained one of the most important functions of the RCP. It is costly but it has remained as the foundation of the Roving Caregivers Program,” Lockhart pointed out. “Supervisors are trained, rovers are trained, parents are trained. Continued training and education leads to improved skills and research has shown that children who receive care from highly trained professionals and caregivers are more likely to flourish and have greater opportunities for learning.”

Lockhart indicated that the workshop will be facilitated by various professionals in their respective fields.

National Director of Childfund Caribbean, Duval Martinez, told participants that early childhood stimulation is important.

“Early stimulation is the door to a better life.  The RCP is important, it will help children who are deprived of many things it will help break the basic rules of poverty by providing skills to these children who otherwise would not have. It is important that we as the practitioners are working directly with the parents to make them aware of the importance,” he stated.

PAHO Country program Specialist Shirley Augustine noted that children’s health is important to RCP. She encouraged participants to listen attentively and participate fully in the workshop. Augustine also reminded the participants to put what they learn into practice.

The Roving Caregivers Program is an early childhood development initiative and is implemented in about 20 communities in Dominica.

It would be interesting to know when this project ends. A project has a start date and end date. He should be a programme officer not a Project Manger.
