Government has granted 81 full scholarships to students in 2011 to pursue studies, Minister for Education Petter Saint Jean has disclosed.
In his Christmas message he said that students’ performance has increased with “roughly 80 percent reading at the grade levels”, and a higher number of students obtaining passes in exams.
Government assistance in the education of hundreds of Dominicans is part of the success in education development throughout 2011, Saint Jean noted.
In his message Saint Jean also took the time out to point out to development taking place in Dominica saying the island “has been spared the worst” throughout 2011, and has called on nationals to recognize the blessings.
“Amid the gloomiest of reports by analysts the world over, we have witnessed the commencement and/or continuation of major capital projects ranging from the launch of exploratory drilling at one of our geothermal sites, to the construction of the Roseau/Portsmouth highway and the life transforming west coast water project,” he stated.
He also pointed to the collapse of Matthieu dam in Layou, floods and landslide on the east and west coasts as challenges that confronted Dominica this year.
“Yet here we are today, basking in the joys of Christmas,” Saint Jean concluded.
