Six Dominicans earlier this week walked away with a diploma in Holistic Massage with Anatomy and Physiology after completing a nine month International Therapists Examination Council (ITEC).

ITECH is one of the world’s leading and most successful awarding bodies specializing in beauty and therapy, fitness and hairdressing sectors and has been awarding high quality and respected qualifications since 1947.

The students received training in anatomy, physiology, professionalism and ethics.

President of Dominica Spa Health and Wellness Association (DSHWA), Martha Cuffy, told the students that they are helping to shape the health and wellness economy in Dominica.

“Through you people will be raving about their experiences, they will recommend you to other people who will want to explore more of Dominica because they know that they will want to come back and be in recovery under your caring, healing hands,” Cuffy said.

She encouraged them to take their training and use it to break paradigms on what people think wellness is.

The students were trained through both online and on-site classes over the nine months. They also completed a three hour written exam and a practical examination in June 2013.

One student, Reisha Felix earned an overall distinction.

Quality Assurance Officer of Discover Dominica Authority, Samantha Letang, remarked that programs such as these ensure that the cadre of persons that are employed in the sector are trained to offer the services being advertised.

Gemma Clarke, Gizelle Laville, Reisha Felix, Valencia Webb, Kripa deFreitas and Roney Serrant received their certificates from the Minister of Tourism Ian Douglas.

The course was the initiative of a D-SHWA member, Terri Henry, who coordinated and kept the students motivated during their most challenging times. She is also behind the many of the Health and Wellness Expos that took place in Dominica for the past five years.
