A local bookstore is making the academic life of six students a bit easier by offering them full scholarships to attend primary and secondary school.

Jays Book Store Ltd on Thursday morning officially handed over the scholarships to Nyah Carlisle of Fond Cole, Keanna Dorsette of Marigot, Payne Henry and Ariel Addi Rogers of Mahaut and Kerrie Alexander of Pichelin to attend secondary school.

Nathan Victor of Soufriere who attends the Convent Preparatory School, is the only primary school recipient.

Proprietor of Jays Book Store John Lewis, said the establishment is pleased to assist the students in their educational career.

“We take great pleasure in doing that because we recognize that not all of us are able to afford to go to school,” he said. “This year we are awarding six scholarships; five at the secondary school level and one at the primary school.”

He explained that the scholarships are awarded based on needs and he hopes the students will make good use of the opportunity, urging them to be ‘men and women of great professions.’

Lewis further stated that the company feels ‘gratified’ that it is able to give a helping hand.

Kerrie Alexander, 11, of Pichelin who will be attending the Dominica Grammar School said there are no words to express how she feels.

“Really I feel excited to have the scholarship … it will help me through my school … without it I don’t know what really I would do or my mummy would do,” she told DNO. “She would try to help me but it would not reach everything. I would need to go to school. I am thankful for what Jays gave me, my books everything … there is really no words to express the way I feel.”

Ariel Addi Rogers 12 of Mahaut who aims to become a medical doctor said the the scholarship means a lot to her and to her family.

“It means better opportunities to go to high school, less expense for my parents, less stress for my parents,” she said.

Nyah Carlisle, who comes from a family of seven, said she will be attending the Goodwill Secondary School and plans to be a businesswoman in the future.

“It means a lot to me it helping me out … I am grateful for that, so I have to try to work as hard as I can…” she stated in reaction to the scholarship.

Jays have at present four continuing scholarships at secondary schools, two which provide supplementary assistance to bursars, and two primary school continuing scholarships.

The company has been assisting students for at least 20 years.

Well done Mr Lewis  I wish some more merchants would come on board. They are making enough money in Dominica to give back in the way of scholarships.
I would also like to see scholarships/assistance given to the primary school children. After all this is where the formal begins. Many students in the primary schools suffer because of lack of text books and other school materials.
Let’s hope the recipients don’t waste it

Hats off to you Mr. Lewis for giving back. I know for a fact that this isn’t the first time that Jays has supported students in this way. It may not always be publicized but Mr. Lewis has been doing this for years. God will certainly continue to bless you for your generosity.
