SMA student among top 2013 CSEC performers

O'niel Leblanc
O’niel LeBlanc

A student of the St. Mary’s Academy has received the highest number of grade ones at this year’s CSEC examination.

O’neil Le Blanc netted 11 grade ones.

He is closely followed by Convent High School student, Alex Maree Roberts, who received 10 grade ones and a grade two.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Chief Education Officer, Melina Fontaine, revealed that a total of 1,040 students wrote the exams in 2013 from secondary schools across the island and the students were examined in 31 different subject areas.

It was also recorded that 42 students obtained six grade ones, a better performance compared to 35 in 2012.

Amongst the top performers are Elisha Zareith Titre from the Pierre Charles Secondary School with 10 ones and one grade two, Jade Alexander of the Convent High School received 10 grade ones and Lizette Ellyn Eli of the Pierre Charles Secondary School obtained 9 grade ones and 2 grade twos. Daislyn Vidal of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School received 9 grade ones, and 1 grade two and Juanita Michelle Corbette of the Portsmouth Secondary School obtained nine grade ones.

This year Dominica recorded the highest number of grades 1 to 3, since recording began.

It is also the second highest year for students obtaining grades 1-3 in Mathematics and third highest for English A.

The overall success rate is  74.7 percent in the May/June 2013 CSEC Examinations which indicates a significant improvement in the performance of students.

In 2012, the island recorded a pass rate of 67.5 percent.

O’neil, Alex, Elisha, Jade, Lizette, Isaiah, Juanita congratulations on conquering these cruelling exams. I am truely happy you were able to persevere and make your families proud. In an effort to acknowledge your hard work I wish to reward you monetarily but I have none of your contacts. If anyone sees and reads this message please ask these individuals to contact me. Congrats to all students who passed their subjects. However Titre and Elie deserve the highlight for showing that humble and poor households are able to excel. Thanks to you girls for being a shinning star in the south. Thanks for being the positive role models that our youths need. Am so proud of you guys. Excuse me Writer… why is Oneal CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY Anna Maree Roberts and not by Elisha Titre? As far as your reporting goes they have the same grades 10 0nes and 1 two….. so why the distinction? Is it a matter of class prejudice. Please fix that statement.

Schools are listed in order of codes. CHS Centre code is o70001 while PCSS IS 070013. This has to do with the establishment of schools. Take for example Castle Bruce, established after PCSS, It’s code is 070016 and so as the list unfold it starts with 01.
This has nothing to do with preference, let’s just celebrate the excellence of all.

Us Dominicans need to honour our people when they do well. I don’t dispute Antigua and Guyana’s result, which is phenominal, however we are looking at the number of subjects done in Dominica. Who knows? maybe if we did Twenty subjects at one time in Da a student could have done well and receive 20 ones. So give our young people their flowers and praise our educators and students for a job well done. On another note, those who were not successful, don’t give up, its not over you still have another opportunity to do your subjects over and succeed. There are many people who ,including myself, did not do well in exams but with determination went on to do the exams over and has been employed permanently with govt for years now.

Can someone tell me what is the difference between 10 ones and a two and ten ones and another two, or are we elevating some while pressing some.

please clear this thing whoever can!!!!!!!

Don’t forget there are profiles within each subject, so Alex Marie’s profile may have been higher… just a thought. I know that claiming bias is a much easier thing to do, but those of us who teach CSEC know that having the same grade does not mean the same performance.

      August 15, 2013

There is the QUALITY of grade ones to consider; her ten grade ones could have been of better quality than the other students, maybe even to the point where someone with nine grade ones could have performed better. It has happened before.

Congratulations to all students who have done well at the examinations. Good role models for those who are still at school and entering secondary school this September. Teachers and parents who have worked hard with the students must also be congratulated. Let us all encourage the young people to continue to perform at a very high standard when they enter the halls of ‘higher education”. They must believe in themselves, stay away from distractors, spend more time on their studies so that they do not fall by the wayside. The sky’s the limit. Continue to shine. CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!!

I have NEVER understood why a student would want to do 16 subjects anyway. And what exactly are you saying, that our kids don’t deserve praise because they did not do 16 subjects? Shame on you! How many ones did you get?

    • August 14, 2013

No matter what, some folks will never be satisfied and you just proved it. Where are your grades?

    • Raisin in the Sun
      August 14, 2013

Why did you feel the need to bring this in? Did you contribute in any way, shape, or form to these students’ successes? Have you considered the tremendous stress it puts on a student to achieve this feat? Why then try to rain on their parade? I don’t get it. What have you gained by trying to dim their light? Dimming someone’s light will not make yours shine any brighter.

Congratulations to O’Niel and all the others who excelled, even if your name was not mentioned. To all those who may not have been included in the tops, but you did your best, congratulations as well. To those who were not successful try again, and don’t give up. To the families, well wishers and educators who worked tirelessly to help them succeed take a bow. You are a part of the success as well. It would not have been possible without you.

Congratulations to all is unquestionably merited!!! I am, non-the-less, SERIOUSLY concerned about the performance of students of the North East Comprehensive Secondary; the fact they were not mentioned means their performance was unsatisfactory? On another note, though praises are due to those who excelled, I am still concerned with the performance of the 998 (1040 – 42) who DID NOT obtain six grades one and above. Are they destined for the prisons as suggested recently by Dr. Morella Joseph of CARICOM? Have we paid sufficient attention to the fact that ONLY a SMALL percentage of the cohort can be considered to have done well?

    • hmmph
      August 14, 2013

DNO – It would be helpful if you suggest to those submitting articles to you, that acronyms used in these articles be clarified by the writers. When articles are being written, we should first take into consideration our audience. Articles which are published are not only read by people who live in Dominica but around the globe.A perfect example is “CSEC” as used in this article. What does this mean?. This has been my observation of a great number of articles posted on your forum.

Congrats to Oneal Leblanc on attaining 11 ones in CXC. Congrats Jessie and Tony, you’re all are really role model parents who put interest in your kids well being. Anna was first, now is Oneal. God is Good all the time. Continue the good work Jessi and Tony.

Admin, Miss Daniel specifically said that CXC determines the ‘Top” student after assessing the profiles of the students. The SMA student is not necessarily the top student until CXC tell us that he is.

Rather, it would be more appropriate to say, SMA students obtains 11 grade ones at CSEC, because that is what it is.
