Sagicor General Somerset of St. Joseph, Dominica’s longest surviving Sports Club has broadened its Community Outreach Program to include children in the Community.

According to a release the Club hosted a party at its Club House for children, nine years and under, on January 3rd , 2016.

“It was an occasion marked with lots of fun and excitement where the kids were treated with an abundance of snacks including local juices, played games and danced to the tune of popular Caribbean music,” the release states. “Very importantly, every child who attended the party (about 23 in number) walked out with a Christmas gift, while a few received on behalf of close relatives who could not attend.”

The gifts were provided courtesy the St. Vincent De Paul Society of the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church which in turn received a donation from a kind benefactor from St. Joseph now resident in the USA.

The release stated further that on Christmas Day, the Club found it fitting to provide a hot Christmas day meal to 14 economically disadvantaged young men and women in the community.

Somerset, the first Club to receive a Meritorious Service Award (1998) for its contribution to Cricket and Community related projects and which also made a small contribution following the passage of Tropical Storm Ericka, contends that it is most gratifying to demonstrate its inclusion in social programs in the community of St. Joseph and beyond.

The Club takes this opportunity to express gratitude to all individuals and or organisations, corporate entities, members past and present who contributed to what may be considered a successful year of operations in 2015.

Special mention must be made of current sponsors Sagicor General Insurance and local agent H H V Whitchurch and Co. Ltd.

Congratulations to Somerset on reaching out to the children and needy adults in the community. I would certainly like to contribute to this effort next year if it becomes an annual event.
