Teachers from around the island are benefitting from a two-day induction workshop, which will run from August 30 to 31, 2016.
According to Assistant Chief Education Officer (ACEO), Dr. Jeffrey Blaize, the workshop aims to contribute to teachers’ professional advancement and overall competence.
“It’s really to sensitize teachers on the pertinent issues relating to their professional growth and development, but at the same time, hone their professional skills, and sharpen their delivery competence, to ensure that we achieve the type of quality of education that we desire as a system,” he said, at the opening ceremony of the event, held at the Newtown primary School, on Tuesday.
Blaize highlighted the importance of a positive attitude in teaching, regardless of whether or not teachers plan to remain in the profession.
“You have to grow into the profession. You have to give yourself an opportunity to develop,” he advised. “You cannot come with a negative attitude.”
He also spoke the need for planning and preparation among teachers, mentally and otherwise.
“It speaks to planning, preparation, and not only lesson planning and unit planning, but your psychological state. You have to be ready to teach…” Blaize remarked. “With limited preparation, you will do a limited job; with good preparation, you will do an excellent job.”
Blaize described a teacher as “someone who is willing to make the sacrifice, someone who is adequately motivated to deliver, irrespective of the challenges in the context in which they work.” He pointed out that in order to achieve the Ministry of Education’s objective of having every child succeed, teachers must be made competent enough to deliver quality education.
The ACEO stressed that teachers must strive for constant professional development.
“The most important asset of a professional is continuous professional development,” Blaize concluded. “Education is not static—it’s a dynamic entity.”
The workshop is tailored to teachers of both primary and secondary schools, and will feature presenters from several facets of education.
The ACEO stressed that teachers must strive for constant professional development…….. it would be nice however, that the political games stop and assistance be given to deserved teachers , those who are willing and able to teach.
We need salary increase. That’s why you don’t find boys going into this teaching business. Increase our salary and give us our appointment. We are on our knees begging the government for that for a number of years now. Ahlas.
Alas , teachers are really begging for their appointment. No one on rallying on behalf of teachers. What a wicked place..
Cbarryb do you have factual evidence or proof to back up what you are accusing these people of? We need to understand the parameters of the law. Are you aware that these individuals can take you to court for such allegations and become rich on you? It is comments like these that D.N.O should remove from here. Defaming peoples name and character. What is it to you cbarryb? How does this benefit u? How does this make you a better person. My advice to you is you work on making yourself a better individual. Pray for people instead of coming out here and accusing them. Lets try to make Dominica a better place. Have a bless day.
Wow!!!
Are they going to get a raise? I saw an article yesterday where the govt. Announced that .money was not a problem
St.Jean….I suport you 1000%. The they want teachers to bend over and kill themselves to teachers people’s children on that miserable salary and then the ministry of education and their official will take all the praise.
