Thirteen students of the Dominica Sate College (DSC) who are recipients of a scholarship from BB Trust Inc. are being urged to maintain an average of 2.5 GPA and to give back to their country upon completion of their studies.
That advice came from the treasurer of the BB Trust Felix Wilson during a ceremony at the Prevost Cinemal on Tuesday.
“When those scholarships are issued to the students attending the Dominica State College what would very much be appreciated is that you would return to Dominica when you complete all your studies after the college and you may continue to go to university or other colleges that you return to Dominica to give back,” he said.
Wilson urged the students to maintain a good grade.
“Make sure you maintain an average of 2.5 throughout your stay at the State college you have to work hard. Failure to do so the scholarship will be taken away from you …we don’t want to have to do that,” he stated.
Wilson also warned them to use the financial aid received for the express purpose that it was intended for.
President of the DSC Dr. Donald Peters told the recipients that they should not be ashamed of receiving assistance for futhering their education.
“You shouldn’t be ashamed of getting aid … 85 percent of all students who’s going to school in the United States are on some form of financial aid to study,” he said. “In Western Europe the numbers are the same the reason is because higher education is extremely expensive”.
He urged them to be a master of their field of study and aim for a 3.9 or 4.0 GPA.
One of the recipients Chris Jolly, a tourism major, said he is grateful for the opportunity and will ensure that the other 12 will make the best use of the scholarship.
About $1,800 will be allocated for each recipient on a yearly basis and totaling over $43,000.
The scholarship will cover books, tuition and transportation fees.
11 scholarships are for a duration of two years and two for one year.
Four scholarships are for studies in agriculture, four in tourism and hospitality and one in natural resource
They include: Rosette Germain, Rachel Thomas, Ranita Laudat, Nelissa Coipel, Hannah Lee, Geron Sharplis, Dwiyte Senhouse, Dustan Joseph, Chris Jolly, Daren Delsol, Shayne Bruney, Sagesse Charles and Rubina John.
The trust has given over 100 scholarships over the years.
The original benefactors of the trust are Mme Nicole Buchet and Monsieur Thiery Boyer of France.
The BB Trust Inc. is a non profit company dedicated to assisting needy students.
3.0 sounds good. but 2.5 with the ability to demonstrate tht one has mastered beyond the subject area is wonderful
“Maintain a 2.5 GPA”? That’s a joke Scholarship. What’s wrong with a 3.0 GPA? And with that 2.5 you can graduate and be a Doctor? no wonder so many unnecessary fatalities at some hospitals. The bar is set real real low.
Congrats!!! but 2.5 is too low. 3.0 and up would be appropriate.
Congrats to all and thanks to the BB trust for helping out these young minds.
I did not know the college had a programme in Natural Resources. That must be the College’s best kept secret!
Wilson la en toute sauce.
