Twelve-year-old takes on adult challenges

A-twelve-year old who reports taking on adult challenges in an effort to make a difference, says she is getting ready to present a theatrical performance dubbed “A Tale of Slavery”.

Young Gizelle Pierre-Toussaint has an organization known as the LIBRA Foundation aimed at helping her community and others around the island.

The twelve-year-old, who says her commitment is to assist the needy, less fortunate and elderly, reports that her Foundation has already undertaken a variety of projects in various parts of the island, including the refurbishing of a classroom “to encourage enjoyment of the learning environment for students of the Petit Soufriere Pre-school”.

She says the Clifton Primary School has also benefited from her efforts.

“A significant donation of a large table and 33 chairs were also given to the school, to assist the students and teachers there, with their school feeding programme,” a release from the Foundation states.

According to the LIBRA Foundation, it is now ready to embark on its next endeavor, a didactic theatrical performance, entitled “ A Tale Of Slavery “ written by Gizelle Pierre-Toussaint.

The play is scheduled to be staged at the Arawak House of Culture, early March 2012 .

“This production depicts the ambitious attempts of a brother and sister, to heroically  reunite their family after being sold to separate plantations,” the Foundation release explains.

It says for a deeper and clearer understanding of the subject matter, LIBRA Foundation has also put together an exhibition of several artifacts, a full array of African Inventors in the Americas, and a  pictorial collection of Civil Rights Leaders in the Americas including several parts of the Caribbean.

The exhibition will run for one week, post performance .

THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION SHOULD NOT ONLY HOLD UP THIS YOUNG LADY AS A ROLE MODEL, BUT SHOULD ARRANGE SCHEDULES AND PROVIDE THE NECESSARY TRANSPORTATION TO FACILITATE HER VISIT TO SCHOOLS WHERE SHE CAN SHARE HER STORY WITH STUDENTS IN AN EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO SET POSITIVE GOALS FOR THEMSELVES.

It is a hopeful and wonderful sign when young people become involved in community development.

I salute Ms. Toussaint and the LIBRA foundation for their initiative and efforts in contributing to our history and development.

I extend well wishes to Ms Toussaint and the foundation in the staging of their upcoming production. I trust that the production will be successful and that it would be a platform for the growth of the foundation.
