UWI Open Campus Dominica to recognize Class of 2010

The University of the West Indies Open Campus Dominica is pleased to announce the staging of its Recognition of Graduates Ceremony for some 54 graduates of the Class of 2010 of the UWI Open Campus who studied via online, mixed-modes, blended learning and face-to-face methods, as well as graduates who read programmes from the Mona Campus and the Cave Hill School of Business via the UWI Open Campus Dominica Site.

The ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 28, 2011 commencing at 10:00 a.m. at the Ball Room, Fort Young Hotel.

Deputy Principal of the University of the West Indies Open Campus, Professor Vivienne Roberts will preside at the ceremony while Head of the UWI Open Campus Dominica, Dr. Francis O. Severin will chair the formal procedure. A unique highlight at this year’s ceremony is that the feature address will be delivered by the Open Campus’s Class of 2010 Valedictorian, Mr. Daren Pinard. Mr. Pinard, a Dominican and employee of the National Bank of Dominica Limited, emerged as the 2010 Class valedictorian of the entire Open Campus, an extraordinary achievement and proud one for Dominica.

At the ceremony, 54 graduates (13 males, 41 females) will be presented as follows: the Master of Education; the Bachelor of Science (Social Sciences); the Bachelor in Education; the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Post RN); Executive Diploma in Management; and the Certificate in Early Childhood Education (ECCE) for Administrators.

Of special note is the fact that the first cohort of the Certificate in Early Childhood Education (ECCE) for Administrators (launched in the Academic Year 2009/2010) will graduate, a deep source of pride for the Head, staff and tutors as it is a local programme approved by the UWI Board for Undergraduate Studies (BUS).

The decision by the UWI Open Campus Dominica in 2007 to hold an annual local Recognition of Graduates Ceremony has provided graduates who were unable to travel to the four major graduation ceremonies at Cave Hill, Mona, St. Augustine, or Grenada in October 2010 (the location of the formal Graduation Ceremony of the Open Campus), the opportunity and satisfaction of taking part in a recognition ceremony in full view of family and friends, and thanks to the media, the wider Dominican public.

The first of the annual local events was held in 2007 when the Class of 2006 was presented. The graduates in the forthcoming event – the fifth successive ceremony of its kind – are from the Class of 2010.

Among the highlights of the ceremony will be two musical interludes which will feature a former Calypso Monarch of Dominica, King Karessah (Mr. Gregory Riviere), and Ms. Tarina Simon, one of Dominica’s recognized talented musical artists.

Mr. Daryl Bobb, Public Relations Officer of the UWI Alumni Association, will lead the National Anthem. Ms Macina Bethel and Ms. Denise Riley, both first class honours’ graduates, will deliver the address on behalf of graduates and vote of thanks respectively. Vice President of the UWI Alumni Association, Mr. Nelson Pierre, will formally welcome the new alumni to the Alumni Association and the Dominica Chapter.

His Excellency the President Dr. Nicholas J. O. Liverpool and Mrs. Liverpool will be in attendance.

Invited guests should be seated by 9:30 a.m.

The government and the university should enourage more people to enroll in this open campus. They would still get a great education at a fraction of the cost of attending a foreign university.
    Great job guys.

At the ceremony, 54 graduates (13 males, 41 females) will be presented as follows’.

What are up with our males? We needs early child-(boys)-hood programs to turn this around otherwise the boys will keep on faltering. We need them in order to have a productive society.
