UWI Recognition of Graduates Ceremony set for next Tuesday

PRESS RELEASE: The University of the West Indies Open Campus Dominica is pleased to announce the staging of its Recognition of Graduates Ceremony for graduates of the UWI Open Campus who studied via online, mixed-modes and blended learning methods, as well as graduates who read programmes from the Mona Campus, Cave Hill School of Business, and the St. Augustine Campus via the Dominica Site.

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 commencing at 10:00 am at the Ball Room, Fort Young Hotel. The theme of the event is: Demonstrating Positive Leadership Standards in our Society.

Head of the Open Campus at the Pine, Barbados, Dr. Ian Austin, will represent the Director at the ceremony. Head of the UWI Open Campus Dominica, Dr. Francis O. Severin will chair the ceremony while Sir Brian Alleyne, former Acting Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, will deliver the feature address.

At the ceremony, 21 graduates (16 females and 5 males) will be presented as follows: the Master of Science, Counselling; the Master in Business Administration; Executive Diploma in Management; the Bachelor of Science in Management Studies; the Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management; the Bachelor of Education in Educational Administration; and the Bachelor of Education in Literacy Studies.

Although the UWI Open Campus Dominica (formerly the School of Continuing Studies) has previously held occasional graduation ceremonies, notably an interfaith service/ceremony in 1998, the decision was taken in 2007 to hold an annual local ceremony which provided graduates who were unable to travel – for various personal reasons – to Cave Hill, Mona, St. Augustine, or St. Lucia in October 2009 (the location of the inaugural formal Graduation Ceremony of the Open Campus) the opportunity and satisfaction of taking part in a recognition ceremony in full view of family and friends, and thanks to the media, the wider Dominican public.

The first of these events was held in 2007 when the Class of 2006 was presented. The graduates in the forthcoming event are from the Class of 2009.

Among the highlights of the ceremony will be two musical interludes which will feature reigning Calypso Monarch of Dominica, King Karessah (Mr. Gregory Riviere), a student of the Open Campus Dominica; and Mr. Daryl Bobb who is a graduate of the University of the West Indies. Treasurer of the UWI Alumni Association Mrs. Yvanette Baron George will formally welcome the new alumni to the Alumni Association and the Dominica Chapter. His Excellency the President Dr. Nicholas J. O. Liverpool and Mrs. Liverpool will be in attendance.

I appreciate your efforts in showing recognition to the grauates. Studying is not an easy task and it feels good to be recognized even when you feel motivated internally.
