Whitchurch 100 Year Essay Competition recognizes top writers

In recognition of their Centenary Year, H.H.V. Whitchurch & Co. Ltd. sponsored an Essay Competition targeted at the School Network in Dominica.  Chaired by a Panel of three Judges, not affiliated nor associated with Whitchurch, the Essay Competition targeted three Age Groups – 10-12, 13-15 and 16-19.  All schools on island were contacted and asked to encourage their students to participate.

The topic for the Essay was “The Contribution of H.H.V. Whitchurch & Co. Ltd., as a business, to the Dominican community over the last one hundred years (1910 – 2010).”  Specifications on the entries and judging criteria were put in place by the Panel of Judges and decisions on same were given to the Whitchurch Centenary Celebrations Committee.

In the 10-12 Age Group, Rubina John of the Dominica Community High School was awarded the winning prize.  A Special Mention in this Age Group was awarded to Juvaan Sabaroche of St. Mary’s Primary.  In the 13-15 Age Group, April Jules of Convent High School was awarded the winning prize.  Disappointingly, there were no entrants in the 16-19 Age Group.

A personal presentation was made to the Essay Winners and the Special Mention awarded at the Main Offices of H.H.V. Whitchurch & Co. Ltd. by Managing Director, Gerry Aird, accompanied by the Human Resources Administrator, Mavis Christian and the Communications & Training Manager, Kira Thompson-Aird.  Each of the Awardees received a plaque commemorating their achievement in recognition of Whitchurch’s Centenary Year, along with a National Bank of Dominica Wise Start Account Gift Certificate.

H.H.V. Whitchurch & Co. Ltd. would like to thank all of the young persons who participated in the Essay Competition for the efforts in submitting timely and interesting essays for the competition and would like to encourage young persons to keep developing their literary skills to further their knowledge and abilities in same.

Whitchurch would also like to express their appreciation to the Panel of Judges – Dorothy Leevy, Claudia Henderson and Verieux Mourillon – for their time, input and professionalism throughout the Essay Competition.
