Acting Chief Youth Development Officer John Roach has told Dominican youth that creativity, passion and participation are critical elements of strong leadership.

His comments came when he addressed the recent inauguration ceremony of the 2013-2015 Executive of the National Youth Council (NYC).

Roach shared with his audience, his vision for the National Youth Council and its role in the socio economic development of Dominica.

He noted that since the resurgence of the National Youth Council in 1996, young people of Dominica have been representing themselves and have made tremendous contributions to the political, social, educational and economic development of Dominica and the region.

“This is evident today in the number of young people who serve on the village councils and the city councils across the island. Many NYC Executive members have transitioned to the political arena and some currently serve as members of parliament, “he said.

Roach spoke of the need for youth to be creative.

“As young leaders you must not let social ills dictate the changes in your society, instead you must be creative and introduce the changes you wish to see. Young people with your talent and innovation are natural agents of change, “he noted.

Roach admonished the island’s youth to be passionate about their goals.

“Passion allows you to see opportunities and find ways to conquer situations. When you are passionate about your work, others see that passion and are drawn to it. This allows you to develop a network with people who believe in you and are willing to advocate for youth development,” he pointed out.

On the subject of participation, he said that youth participation allows creativity and passion to come into play to successfully address youth issues and development.

He continued, “Young people need to have the opportunity to have their voices heard and to be included in the decision making process.”

He said that with the changing environment, Dominica’s youth must lead the way in Caribbean development.

“We must position our youth leaders in Dominica to be change agents in the Caribbean,” The Chief Youth Development officer advised.

The National Youth Council’s inauguration ceremony was held under the theme: “Youth empowerment for sustainable development.”

The Chief Youth Development Officer has said it all and excellently.
I could add, youths are the future adults who, one day will assume their rightful place in society. Therefore, it is necessary that they concern themselves with these important facets.
Ensure that you do not get caught up with consistent negativity and criticisms which could be a set back to moving forward and achieving your goals to make Dominica a good, peaceful and safe place to live.
Think of the future, your future, your hope and aspirations. You can be what you want to be. The expectation is that you will be diligent in your studies, your future progress and success. The future is yours. Good luck and God bless you in all the good that you undertake to do.
