The Youth Development Division says a recently published study, conducted yearly, has recorded a 69.4 percent employment success rate from its programs for 2010-2012.
Chief Youth Development Officer, John Roach, said the trace study allows the division to make an ‘informed assessment’ with regard to the situation of the youth that have been trained in various modules.
“This is one of the instruments which guide our service delivery. It informs us in direct terms about the impact of the program as it relates to the needs of young people, particularly the unemployment situation in Dominica,” he said during the 40th Skills Training Program Graduation for 171 participants on Wednesday afternoon.
He said the findings on those traced between 2010-2012 have been recently published.
“A total of 311 graduates were traced representing those who had completed 10 training modules all over the island,” he explained. “Four of the 10 modules combined registered 69.4 percent employment success.”
They include computer maintenance, 10 percent, building maintenance, 76 percent, home appliance repair 2.5 percent, and Hospitality Arts 52.2 percent.
He said that 48 percent of those who had found jobs had them because they were “directly related to the module they had completed.”
“And as we look back on the three decades of the skills training program we take great pride in knowing that about 7,000 young people have been afforded entry level skills which has transformed their social, economic circumstances,” Roach stated.
The following numbers represent those who completed the computer literacy module: Roseau 37, Portsmouth 22, Wesley 17, Castle Bruce 16, Grand Fond 12, and Grand Bay 17.
Seven completed in computer maintenance at the Roseau Youth Enterprise Center, 10 in Building Maintenance at Marigot, nine in arc welding at Gimmit, and 10 in furniture repair at the State Prison.
