The United Workers Party (UWP) has said that it will contest the upcoming general election without electoral reform.
With the recent announcement by Prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit that the election date will be December 6, 2019, it has become clear that the prime minister does not intend to implement the electoral reforms which the Opposition United Workers’ Party (UWP), the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) and other civic groups have been campaigning for. One of the slogans of the campaign was “no election without electoral reform.”
But UWP leader, Lennox Linton, speaking at a public meeting last week, indicated that the party had reconsidered that strategy and would now contest the election without electoral reform.
“While we were saying no elections without electoral reform in order to pressure Christian people who we thought had a good conscience to do the right thing for Dominica, he [Skerrit] was seeing for him, an opportunity to stay in government,” Linton told a large gathering at a public meeting on Independence Street. “Because if we say no elections without electoral reform and he doesn’t give us electoral reform, and we don’t contest the elections, then the dictator has his dictatorship on a platter and we are not going down that road with him.”
He pointed out that it is the only way that “we will make this the last election in Dominica that we will contest, or we will have without electoral reform.”
He said his party will continue to insist that reform is put in place, “but we are contesting the elections…and we are going to win the elections.”
Linton argued that Skerrit has a plan to stay in office regardless of whether Dominicans wants him there or not.
“But once Roosevelt Skerrit remains in charge, there may never be electoral reform,” he said. “For the simple reasons, we didn’t have it in 2009…we didn’t have it in 2014 and he is telling us now as far as he’s concerned, we are not going to have it in 2019.”
Linton said his party will do what’s necessary to ensure that regardless of what the DLp tries, the UWP will be victorious in this election.
“This means ladies and gentlemen that there is a lot of work for you do to do; there is a lot of work for us to do,” Linton stated. “The power in people is greater than the people in power and now the people in power want to tell us, those who have the power, what to do.”
He added, “We, the people who have the power, will ensure that they do not steal this election.”
He is already a dictator.
If he wins again it only proves that the Dominicans are prepared to ruin this country permanently.
It is hard to comprehend how people think that this man is good for the country. Dominica is worst off than she was under the freedom party. There are no real revenue streams other than tourism and selling of passports. The streets are filthy everywhere you go.. the young people feel hopeless, majority of the skilled labor reside abroad. 2 families run Dominica, bleeding her dry, every policy made on island benefits them one way or another. Dominica is doomed under dlp.
I left Dominica the day labor got into power, I have witnessed for myself how things have gotten worse and worse. The airport and sea port are the same, no change no improvement, long lines and disorder at points of entry.
The bridges and other infrastructure remain damaged or not maintained. Schools same as they were before I left. The hospital papamete! A new building wont change…
So what if you loose sir?

This is the best opportunity to force the presidents hand into changing the election date until there is electoral reform.

We love the progress our developing Dominica has made thus far. I have not voted the last 2 elections. If that is the case, and the labour party doesn’t give us an international airport in the next 5 years in power, the UWP will get my vote.
Knowing what we do know about Skerritt and his disregard for decency, morality and precedent how can the leader of the UWP be so confident that his party will form the next government? There are all manner of shenanigans going on by Skerritt to improve his chances of winning and is the UWP just going to give him a free hand to continue. Resistance doesn’t have to be violence. Look at Hong Kong. The violence is coming mostly from the police. I’m disappointed in the stance of the UWP but I’ll wait to hear the results of the election.

I understand the uwp strategy and it’s some what similar to the one Rossie Dauglas and labour had in 2000 which is use corruption. The plan is get the people onboard that corruption is taking place but the twist is that the election is not going to be free and fair but still contest. Now the difference is that labour had lots of money back then to bring people from overseas down to vote just as uwp did . The uwp don’t have the money this time around as to bring people to vote so they are going to say if they loose it was stolen. How else can one explain it ? I mentioned before, that the PM recognizes that he can force UWP to choose or lose. By making the bold statment No Reform, No Election, UWP was forced to decide which battle is paramount at this juncture. And contesting the election is the right decision. The voters will do the electoral reform at the polls, by voting out DLP; this will be the best electoral reform ever in Dominica. No electoral reform, no return to office for DLP. Just say No and Skerrit have to Go.
We, the people, depend too much on politicians to lead the fight. The people’s collective strength and influence is much more powerful than those in power. Look around the world, it’s the power of the people that is ridding their country of their corrupt governments. All right thinking people and true patriots of Dominica should boot Skerrit and his namby pamby government from office. I agree with contesting electrons but i still think that should be when all else is lost. There should be demonstration every day forcing the president to act since he is currently in charge of the country. He has power to delay election until reforms are done.
