Twelve calypsonians have avoided elimination and are now headed for the quarter final of the 2014 calypso competition.
The elimination round of Dominica’s biggest carnival event was held at Krazy Kokonuts on Saturday night.
The twelve are: Young Bull, Wave, Trendsetter, Triumph, Chris B, Leona, Observer, Checko, Booplé, Beetle J, Man Himself and Lugars.
Wave is the only newcomer among them. They will go on to meet last year’s twenty semi finalists in the quarter final which is carded for February 1.
Three reserves have been chosen: JD, Sugar S and Alisha. It is expected that one of them will replace 2013 finalist, Karessa, who will not be competing this year as he will soon be leaving for Australia to study.
65 calypsonians participated in the eliminations.
The calypso semi final is set for February 15 and the grand final will be on the 1st of March.

When a man can cheat at a calypso competition, proven with pics and all, and is then voted to run the Calypso association, I don’t calypso going anywhere. what values are we teaching young people….shame on all the calysonians who never condemned this.
Wrong is wrong….and should never be rewarded, as in this case to even lead the association.

Why didn’t BOPPLE didn’t sing the much talked about WHO DID DAT TO GOATIE ? Everybody in Roseau South looking forward to this hot number. Some people saw the lyrics and he pretending as if he doesn’t know nothing about that great potential crown and road match song.

If they doh put crap in the quarters its going to be even harder for the judges to get it right to get some quality in the semi’s so well cut a few good guys put in crap so you have some crap to chop to get the best shit for the semi’s. Most of the Calypsos were rubbish. Quality has really gone down over the years.
I see that so far the grand calypso review heard all over the world last year was just a sham.

More “reservists” from last year than actual successful candidates this year going into the quarterfinal.
Yes, there was an AGM, but where was the audited account? I haven’t heard of it or seen it.
I’ve concluded that there can never be change in our calypso affairs in Dominica.
Norman Letang said in that “sham” last year that it was ridiculous to play for that many calypsonians on one night at Eliminatins, and that others do it but he wouldn’t.

You people thing calypso is a singing contest! its an art of social and political commentary in a creative musical form containing lyrics mainly in a masked way with a melody to suit the words with emphasis on presentation and not voice.
Name the famous calypsonians who could not sing or play an instrument. Mask or no mask, sing the melody.

With all sixty eight competitors, I think they should have pre elimination shows until there is twenty left, so by the elimination date they would be more prepared and ready to battle the bigger guns, and we would have a better show and the association will make more money.
think the best calypso was from hardline with good voice but something went wrong was disappointed. keep strong don’t give up.calypso is my cure to.

Instead of twelve there should be 15 selected. 12 by the judges and three (wild cards) by the audience.
It was too many and too difficult for the judges to get it right.
Ther should also be one or two wild cards fo the quarters and the semies.
We can never please all the people all the time. No matter who was picked someone else would most likely believe someone else should have been picked instead. Did the calypsoian singing Part Payment make it?

Most ridiculous thing. How do you cut to twelve from sixty five? Why not 65 to 45….45 to25…..25 to15 then proceed to finals. In other words the competition gets tighter and the calypsonians can sing their way to a higher standard. This is a waste as it is currently set up. The entire thing in it’s current format is a rush. Stop compromising standards and killing calypsonians’ dreams.

I agree! The competition starts with way too many calypsonians to be cut down to a mere 12; a number of sensible good quality songs are likely to be sacrificed in the process. Perhaps the elimination could be done in stages or groups…something to think about.

I agree with you but I fear they will never be. Every year they wáiting for the last minute to get the same writers to give them a song and thorn there is no musicians with really good arranging skills.
