Black Diamond is crowd favourite at Testing The Best

Black Diamond, with the help of the many calypso fans who attended the Testing The Best calypso show at Harlem Plaza on Saturday , was adjudged the overall winner of the event.

Testing The Best, which has been held annually for the past several years, pits the finalists of the national calypso competition against each other in pairs, to see who can better perform each other’s song.

Patrons are then asked to choose an overall winner.

It was clear from the tremendous response that the young, popular calypsonian received when he and Electra performed each other’s songs, that Black Diamond was  poised to leave Harlem Plaza as the overall crowd favourite.

In the other encounters of the evening the crowd response was follows:

Soul Puss vs De Rose – winner, De Rose

Checker vs Web – winner, Checker

Ras Kelly vs Daddy Chess – winner, Daddy Chess

Ghetto Prince vs Karessa – winner, Ghetto Prince

    • crix is it
      June 2, 2013

what wrong with crix, let a hunger take you in town and is $5 you have. A crix and red quenchi coming down we. Jah Know.

      • DUH
        June 4, 2013

the sponsors will always try to promote their products; hence the crix and red cap which I think (correct me if I am wrong) is from Springfield Trading???? so if Whitchurch was sponsoring the gift you would have probably seen a six pack of Carib beer or something like that in it. ok. This is marketing lesson 101.

    • WOI!!!
      June 3, 2013

      Probably the sponsors…lol

Please look at ‘pits’ in paragraph two (second line) of the story. It seems to be a problem / typo…if it isn’t, please disregard.

    Peace

    • June 3, 2013

      Alex Bruno June 2, 2013

It seem as the word should be “puts” as in “puts the finalists of the national calypso competition against each other in pairs”. But this typing error can happen very easily with “u” and “I” being right next to the each other.

    • Mango Bab
      June 3, 2013

Alex, I am ASSUMING that the person who typed the story hit the I key instead of the U key (these two keys are side-by-side on the keyboard. I am assuming that the person wanted to type “…pUts the finalists…” instead of “pits the finalists…” What damage a big I can cause, instead of a little U (pun intended)

    • Programmer
      June 3, 2013

To “pit” one person against the other is a proper, grammatical word. Go check you all’s dictionaries. After all, man Alex, a journalist or radio personality like you with so much lapawol – after all your aka is “Pawol”, should know that.

      • Ltd vocabulary
        June 4, 2013

Programmer you like many others assume that journalists/radio personalities of today are of a certain level of intelligience and do not possess a limited vocabulary. This is a comment that I always make, some of the media people do not educate themselves or improve their vocabulary, and as a result there is a proliferation or poor english perpetuated in the media. Then we blame the youth who speak the same when this is what they are learning from the media. Not to put down Mr Bruno, but as a journalist if he is confused by the use of the word in the paragraph he should simply type the word ‘pit’ in microsoft and click lookup and he would find there are almost 12 meanings of the word ‘pit’.

On thing I can say is that DNO certainly brings to light the illeteracy of our people. Maybe that will make us look closer at our education system and our need to better educate ourselves ( and I do not mean getting a degree) simply read some more.

Yeah right Limited vocabulary, the word is illiteracy. Learn to spell!

    • ???UWP ? MARK???
      June 3, 2013

You are questioning whether it was an error without making the pre-requisite research on the matter before advancing an unsure comment. The word PITS is definitely not an error. There is such a thing as a Dictionary . We are too quick to jump to conclusions with the lack of employment of any though logical process. Bad English on or off the stage is intolerable. I am happy, that in the spirit of Democracy that DNO had elected to publish your comment.
Congratulations to BLACK DIAMOND ; not even that the Alex could say.

    • Grmmr
      June 3, 2013

“Pits” is an appropriate word to use in this case. It means to put up against (as they calypsonians competed against each other.)

    • It matters
      June 3, 2013

The use here is absolutely correct – as verb ” to set in opposition or combat, as one against another.” Check your dictionary. In other words… To compete against another performer.

This young man is going places. He has alot of potential. He will definitely be a future king. The judges need to pay more attention to lyrics, rendition and delivery, and less on crowd response. In my opinion, judges are forced to make a decision based on crowd influence, rather than focus on judging criteria. That must be addressed in order for a worthy king to be crowned. I was at the 2013 Calypso competition and i must say that i am extremely disappointed with the results. Black Diamond , all the best in 2014.

    • Derryck
      June 3, 2013

Are you implying that the seven or eight judges throw the criteria out of the window and base their scores on crowd response? I personally give the judges more credit than that.

      • DC
        June 3, 2013

Derryck, you have misinterpreted my post. Scores are definitely not based solely on crowd response, however, i am convinced that much too much emphasis is placed on crowd response when determining who wears the crown.
