Tommy Lee Sparta taken into custody

Tommy Lee (in bus) after he was arrested at the Melville Hall Airport on Sunday

Controversial Jamaican dancehall artiste, Tommy Lee Sparta, who was set to perform in Portsmouth last night,  has been arrested after he was denied entry into Dominica on Sunday evening.

The artiste and at least three members of his entourage are presently at the Marigot Police Station,  DNO was reliably informed.

DNO’s source indicates they were arrested after they refused to return to the jet they had landed on.

The artiste’s jet is presently on the tarmac at the Melville Hall Airport.

Main organizer of the concert, Cabral Douglas, has confirmed to DNO that the artiste has been denied entry.

Attorney, Tehani Behanzin, who is trying to assist in the matter has been denied access to him, according to Douglas.

It is unknown why Tommy Lee was denied entry.

Tommy Lee’s performance in Dominica has been harshly criticized by members of the religious fraternity who allege that his music promotes violence.

The Dominica Association of Evangelical Churches (DAEC) has been called for a boycott of the concert featuring Sparta, who, it claims glorifies Satan during his performances.

DNO is continuing to follow this unfolding story and will publish more information as it becomes available.

Dominica have the right to refuse him. Other countries would do the same if they think that the person is a threat of if it’s just unsafe for its citizens. He is not the only artist that have been refused. He was arrested because he refuse to leave the country. Before some people defend him, get the story straight. Authorities have the right to refuse anyone.

At this point i’m still not certain as to why Tommy Lee Sparta was denied entry into Dominica and subsequently detained. However, i listened to a few individuals who spoke about the artiste’s right to free speech whether not he’s promoting satanic or demonic worship. We must be guided by the fact that one of the pillars of our nation is that we recognise the supremacy of God and as such , we can’t allow individuals free reign to advocate the worshipping of Satan or any other being who stands opposed to the teaching of the Bible or other books by which we live.

The music he sings is spoiling the youths of the country. Well tell you what, why don’t we just censor the internet like the Chinese and the rest of the police states do.

Come on people. We are quick to judge other and yet call ourselves God fearing.

This would have been my 3r straight year at Dominica carnival but I am boycotting it. It’s not like the man landed wid a plane load of Jamaican weed. That’s the man’s way of earning a living. Thumbs down to the Dominican authorities.

As a Jamaican I am really shocked and appalled at the actions of the Dominican Officials. I am inclined to believe that the only reason he was denied entry into the country to perform is because so many of the citizens are critically of his music and the image that he portrays. I didn’t know that that was reason enough to deny a Caribbean national entry into another CARICOM country. Did they think that he was going to overstay his time in Dominica? Or commit a crime while he was there? SMH

Furthermore, the controversial issue regarding the concert has been playing out in the media for months now. Therefore someone must have known that they were thinking about or have decided that they would not grant him entry into the country when he arrives. Why not write to the promoter of the show and inform him of their decision so that he can cancel the event?

The other thing that is most puzzling is the reason why he was arrested? And also why is he denied access to an attorney? Come on now Dominicans, even the most hardened of criminals have the right to legal representation. Such a move was rather ill-advised and imprudent.

I’m not trying to be insolent but Dominica had more to gain from this event that Tommy Lee because of the simple fact that Jamaican artists do not have to perform in Dominica. Dominica is a very tiny island. The revenues that they will make there is nothing compared to what they make when they go on North American and European tours. It is not even comparable to what they make while performing in Jamaica because they are 2.7 million people in Jamaica. And in case you haven’t noticed we love and support all our artists and that is why they do well locally and internationally. If this is the way that they are going to be treated when they come there then I am sure that their managers will think twice before accepting an invitation to perform there.

This behavior from Dominica is downright shameful! DO NOT JUDGE A MAN BECAUSE HE SINS DIFFERENTLY FROM YOU. Some of you are talking that his music is of the devil. Is BOUYON music and Carnival of God? It is full time people start taking responsibility for their own actions and stop blaming others. We all have choices. Tommy Lee has a choice to sing whatever he wants and we have a choice to support his music or not to support it. Even God himself gives us the choice to serve him or not to serve him. He could have killed everyone who is not Christian.

The reason why he was invited there to perform is because somebody in Dominica is listening to his music and like it and I am certain that it wasn’t just one person. If you think that his music is so influential that it will cause the youths to do evil things if he performs there, well guess what, after he is released and goes back to his country his music will live on and the youths will still have access to his songs on the internet and other means. It won’t influence them to do evil then?? SMH

So thoroughly put not a detail speared!! N those same religious individuals will still get drunk creole festival listening to music from people sometimes they can barely understand because they like the beat. This is why country’s have wars because it takes one loud lone tired sheep to rally all sheep if they are tired of the leaders to just run him down. All those so called Christians indulge in acts of sin like fauna cation which holds the same penalty as worshiping the devil. Sin is sin. But big up Tommy Lee every ghetto yute need a way out even by the means of worshiping the devil. Life is short so from the moment you decided to want to live it to the fullest with no regrets who can speak about it cause they need to live thiers too. Gowan do your ting man Tommy!!

MS it is very unfortunate that our government treated a fellow Caribbean man with such disdain and blatant disregard for human rights. Please understand that the people of Dominica are not happy with the action of the government.
We know that this government has no moral authority to judge anybody on ethics or even socio economic behavior when the members of the Dominica government have been involved in all kind of racketeering to include the wanton selling of passports and diplomatic positions to all kind of crooks and criminals.
There are ministers of government who had been accused of attempted rape and the matter was swept into the ocean. The ministers of government have become wealthy while the people are swimming in poverty.
MS we hope that as a people we can look past the evil of our government in Dominica and focus on the willingness of the people to welcome Sparta and any other Jamaican artist to our island.

i am truly againsthow dominicans are treating tommy lee. if he comes to perform for couple hours hows that affecting the youth. even if it didnt had a tommy lee show, they still listen to these types of music home or even in public. free he aint thtommy lee!!!!! He worst artist in the world and his song aint the worst at all. we have some rude and worst song here in dominica and we aint do nothing like that song bullet through your head by kkk. is that even positive? did they do anything about that song especially when it was played in public. i say free tommy lee for he has done nothing wrong to be treated like a dog. all the hypocrete christians that keep running their mouth. yall shouldnt say nothing because if you are a true man of God then you shouldnt judge a book by its cover. only the lord can judge and not humans. when the gay ship came to dominica, nothing was being done about this. as dominicans we shouldnt treat our own caribbean people like animals especially a jamaican artiste because think about how we always send for them to perform at our festivals and how dominicans always go to their country to perform. would you like if they treat us dominicans like we are not welcome. have a heart and free the man. let him perform for it is not exposed to the public but it is exposed to who ever want to attend the show. dominicans have a serious issue that needs to be delt with. if we are a country of love then im not seeing it but im seeing dominicans judging him by his cover. and arresting an innocent man who did nothing wrong in dominica or the people. have a heart and free the man. tommy lee i say!!!!!

My question is are we on the verge of seeing the church and state uniting? This is dangerous, because when some kind of religious leader decides that one group of persons are not willing to accept their teachings or beliefs then these individuals may be treated as heretics. Then we will see people being burn to the stake like in the dark ages.
I am a believer in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the only mediator between God and man. But I will say to those individuals how are supporting this move by the so called defenders of Christ and the police, that is action in no way will make our beloved country a Holier nation.
First and foremost let me say I have never listen to the music this artist(or if you all choose to call him one) sings. I don’t get myself cut up in this type of music in the first place. My question to the members of DAEC is do you all listen to his music? Ok it is all well and good if you believe is not good and it incites violence. But you same people from this DAEC, I hope you all are not permitting you all’s CHILDREN to listen to this guy’s music? And if they do you all should call in the police for them. A lot of the churches on island want to play worldly music in their services and justifying it by saying it speaking about Jesus. But I will say to you all that devil music is devil music no matter words you put to it. What is the problem, are you all afraid that all you so called members will go to the show? Go run a campaign so that MARPIN and SAT stop putting violent music videos and heavy loaded SEX content and the violent movie which you all call action pack which are rotting the mind of our society. Benny Hinn you all’s famous televangelist was cut on tape giving a man heroin at a party at his place and man died that same night from a drug overdose. But you all will pay big money to go see him in T&T. Please tell me what is the difference between the Jamaican singer and Benny Hinn. Benny Hinn uses hypnosis on people and that is a trick straight from the pits of hell. He was being interviewed by the BBC and he did not confirm it but didn’t denied it either. So let me ask the followers of Benny Hinn in Dominica which sin is worse, hypnosis(working for devil) or singing the devil’s music?
Let us remove the mote in our eyes before we can see to clean someone else’s eyes.
Remember I said I don’t know the guy song and I am not interested to know either. But taking the guy into custody is that going to stop Dominicans from killing each other? The answer is No.

Everybody here acting like this is the first that someone has been denied entry, its not the first and it surely will not be the last. Dominica and any other country have the right to deny anyone no matter what the reason is.And yes there will not be a backlash, Tommy Lee has been denied entry in other countries before so this aint that serious. Until Tommy Lee stop signing those kinda lyric in his sounds which aint acceptable in a christian community trust me he will be denied entry from alot more countries, so my advice is don’t go beating no drums and defending him. Until you understand a governments responsibility for its people when it comes to protecting its people don’t go defending him.

    • Anonymous
      February 24, 2014

It’s not the fact that he was denied. It’s the manner in which it was done. Would u like someone to strip search in public? Would u like after they detain u to deny u to be represented. Don’t u have rights? the government does have the right but I’m sure they could have handled it better, but people in authority often think they are above the law and think they can do as they please.

I’ve read your comments and perhaps I can share a testimony with you.

A few years back there was a young man in my neighbourhood who was a truant, he was rather a bully, a thief just name it and that was the young man. He was turned away by many and perhaps society casted him out for what they thought he was. One day this young man got into an altercation with my son and he was so disturbed by the fact that my son had given him a bad beaten he was out for revenge at any cost. he came to the house that we rented at the time and tried to break down the door to regain his manhood by trying to do (damage control) finish my son off. Ofcourse the police was called, he went into hiding. Every day for about three months I went to where he lived to find him to no avail. I was told whenever he see’s me or the cops he’d run away. One day coming home late from work guess who I ran into. Yes you guess right that same young man. I advise him not to run I just wanted to talk to him. he obliged, we spoke for more than an hour. This young man was barely 15 years of age and when I sat down and listened to him, I as a human being was literally crying on the inside, and he was in tears. This was a young man who was emotionally disturbed, treated like trash by his own mother. Had nothing to eat at home and so he had to do what he had to do to survive. I told him that I had forgiven him, the door was already repaired and his debt was already paid in full. From this day onwards I could see the changes in him. I’d help him with what little I had. He now respected my son and whenever I’d come home with groceries, five gallon bottles of water guess who would be waiting outside to help me? You guessed right again.

I say this to say, To all of us who call ourselves Christians how and what are we going to do to impact this young man’s life? are we just going to do like everyone else and shy him away with insults and slurs? or we going to invite him and show him the love of God. This is an opportunity for we as Christian to treasure this moment, take this chance to converse with Mr Tommy Lee Sparta regarding the love of God. this might have just been the one in a million chance that we get to transform a man of the world into a man of the gospel of Christ. I wish everyone of you love, peace and God’s richest blessings. remember THOUSAND OF CANDLES CAN BE LIGHTED FROM ONE SINGLE CANDLE, AND THE LIFE OF THAT CANDLE WILL NOT BE SHORTENED. HAPPINESS NEVER DECREASES BY BEING SHARED.SO PLEASE SPREAD THE LIGHT BY BEING THE CANDLE OR THE MIRROR THAT REFLECTS IT.

This a pretty dicy case here. The Church is not the state and the state is not the church. Do they have a legal right to stop the Caricom national entry in Dominica. The Artiste has a constitutional right to his religion, whether it is demon of God. Then you can’t arrest the man on the premise that his song promotes violence. He must first be allowed to sing and if you have evidence that his song promotes violence, then you may be able to arrest and press charges. I am afraid that this is going to be a big legal battle.

We need to wise up a bit.. too many reckless comments… Governments from all over the world prevent individuals from entering the countries for one reason or the other. Cartoonist, singers, comedians, writers etc. Sizzla can’t perform in certain European because of his stance on Homosexuality, that doesn’t make those countries backward in anyway. We can’t deny his plane entry into our airspace or prevent it from landing but he can be denied from going thru immigration. The guy should have just gotten back onto his plane and respect our right as an independent nation to allow him or not.

He not bigger than the law of the land. If he is denied entry and asked to get back to his Jet and leave, that is what he should do. Whether the Police are right in law or not.

He should then seek redress for refusal of entry into Dominica or whatever if he felt that his rights as a CARICOM citizen were violated. But by disobeying the police order he has committed an offence, and rightfully so is arrested and will be charged. (He lucky he didn’t get some “fatigue” from the police).

I went to google the man and youtube. I am sure most youths and everyone with internet access did.. So tell me, who won and who lost?

And if demon arise from his music, well we already all catch it.

Stupid people. Ban Carnival. Ban the Be Belle dance (its demonic) ban the Va Valle events in the carib territory (its evil)

Ban Calypso, ban Soca music. Band Cigarette.. band Alcohol.. why not christian people? Youths all u protecting right>? so ban everything..

What makes Vaval Satanic? No one in the band or crowd invokes Satan or any of his demons. No one dresses or uses any Satanic costumes. The “burial” of vaval is not a burial. It is a “burning” ritual which symbolizes the “burial or putting to rest” of the “spirit of carnival” until the next Carnival season. Be educated and stop your crap and Shut up!!!

This is definitely not the way to deal with someone who have influence over the mind of our young people.
As a born again believer. I believe the Dominican evangelical Christian organization should have welcome this Artist to Dominica, and invite him to have a special session with them after the concert, witness to him, pray for him, and allow God to do the rest.
The only thing that make us different from this man is the Grace of God. Some of us need to go back to the basic of Christianity to understand the counseling methods Jesus used to win souls to Christ. Christ came for sinners to repentance. You do not fight a battle for God. The Bible said let your light shine before men that they may see your good work, and that they may glorify the Father in heaven. Remember Jesus by the well.
The Artist gave a superb explanation about his character, changes in his life. and his intention. He could be an ambassador for Christ. The Bible said that we should use wisdom in everything that we do. I just pray to God that we believer understand what Grace, and Mercy have done for us, so that we understand how to deal with those that do not know better.

You all are just making it harder for us DA Musicians. Our industry already so weak and thats wat u all doing to another artiste? U all think our music will ever be accepted by others out there is that wat u all doing to others..this man says way he says in his songs, but he commands no one to do wat he says. Even in DA we sing songs stating the woman can put their butts in the air, should we stop these bands from playing these songs too. I think that we have bigger problems to deal with in this country. Mr. PM if u are only listening to the church now then i think it too late. all the violence in this place is a direct result of ur incompetence and failed leadership. U preach just as must violence. allot more than tommy lee would. he performs for only 2 to 3 hours. u have been preachin violence for years and years. all u all had to do was ask the artiste not to perform some songs or have then censored. This is wrong and i have that feeling that we in the entertainment arena will be th eone feelin this in the long run. He has several signed contractual agreements to perform in many countries months and even a year before he was arrested. The authorities in Jamaica knows this and that is why they did not ask him to surrender his travel documents. This is the man’s lively hood. He cannot be denied the right to make a living when he has not been tried and proven guilty of a crime.

And you right, there is NO wisdom here,
When God break chains he never ask us to rob it in people face cause they didn’t get their way . Instead you should have a different approach. keep your mouth shut until you can have a good discussion with somebody who needs to hear about God. It is not to come on here with your baseless foolery calling God name in it . God don’t need man credit for the man being held illegally (most likely ) He glorious on his own. Stop making the christian community go through more struggles than it already has.
Now if there is something Demonic about the man and there is stopping to be done i don’t believe God would ask us to do it in a illegal, chaotic, negative way.
do you know what a testimony is. If i wasn’t a christian I would dismiss all of you . an there is no way I would want to hear a christian today or for days to come. Rethink your praise, who really getting praise from it . who you really hurting.

The amount of miracles and thing of the olden days God did through Christ you ever see him robbing in people face. He tell you to go in your closet and pray. and not be like the Pharisees and hypocrites .stop doing damage. cause I actually need the opportunity to share reasoning and testimony and Gospel to someone who might be outraged .
And when you pray today, pray for discernment. so you right…. NO wisdom in what most of you doing.

I believe in prayer, that God answers prayer and that it is the responsibility of Christians to keep a nation in check . The Bible says that God will reward a righteous nation.
While a lot of RELIGIOUS persons are happy, please understand that God is not a God of chaos and the Bible also requests that we respect the ‘law of the land’ .
So please let us wait to be sure that this arrest was done legit, that he was a threat against the law before we start claiming that God would want us to rejoice and be posting comments that break peace and bring controversy.
Blessed are the peace makers. We are pushing away souls instead of creating a testimony. Think before you post, Christians !

As a fellow christian I must commend this point. I too have very little knowledge about this artist. I read up about him to educate myself before I made any contribution to the discussion. AS Christians we need to remember how Christ ministered when he walked this earth. He sat with the prostitutes, the thieves, adulterers etc. He came to save “THE LOST”. Church is not for perfect people it is a place that the broken and the wounded go to get mended. Personally I believe that arresting him has cost him an opportunity to see God’s people at work. A march of God’s children around the venue of this event would have sent a stronger message; that the people of God are alive and praying for this country. Actions speak louder than words. I am so fed up of my brothers and sisters who forget how the Lord has renewed us and we fast to pass judgement on others instead of fulfilling our purpose which …. saving souls for Christ.

However, I think that the matter in relation to his arrival should have been dealt with prior to him incurring expenses – traveling to Dominica, etc. It is just a matter of respect. While we don’t know if any other expenses will be incurred, what is sure is that Dominican will have to pay for the jet, pilot and entourage stay in Dominica over night. No matter where we are from, what religion we belong to, or who we are we have to give respect to gain respect. LOVE

Non-Dominicans do not have the right to land in D/ca. It is a privilege granted to them which can be revoked at an instant just as in any other part of the world. It includes anyone who is not born in the country.

That is pure rubbish and the immigration people cannot just deny access and detain him for that, his plane sure as hell must have gotten clearance to land. So why cant he come to Dominica? The authorities should have seeked legal advice before detaining the individual or even denying him access to our lovely country. So we as Dominicans are so ignorant that we would subject an individual, who is simply making a dollar, from coming to our shores. Why aren’t we stopping the con men, and other persons escaping prosecution who are enters our island?

But to ill treat him in such a manner like this is embarrassing and shameful. people need to be more open minded and respect other people’s opinions. people have a right to listen to whatever they want, its there choice. Why dont these churches have their protest when its carnival time ? since its considered “evil” for them. You know what they need to do is let him perform and see if there is a direct relation between his performance and an increase in crime and violence in Dominica because the way some people are acting, is like his performance is going to cause soo much violent and corruption of the youth in Dominica whilst carnival which is coming up has soo much fights and violence in it, why are they not protest or preventing the bouyon bands from playing.

Some of you do not think. Everything for you is a legal implication and sue. There are always exceptions, free movement of people who are eligible to legally enter a country; not the reverse.
The immigration authorities did not ill treat them. They simply informed that they are not welcomed in Dominica and to return to their jet. They refused as if they are D/cans and also own D/ca.
A country has a right to deny entry to those who do not qualify for entry. It is as simple as that.
The onus is on the organizers/promoters, the head who was stubborn enough not to cancel this concert amidst the objections of the majority of Dominicans.
There is a morality issue here which you read about. Do not pretend that you are blind and deaf to it. Read the first article and the second one on DNO.

A Religous leader openly advocated and supported Lennox Lawrence’s concept of drone violence against government opposition and many of us just simply accepted such violent utterance and now the same people want to crucify the Sparta guy for expressing himself as an artist.

Praise The Lord, they keep him out. Whatever it is immigration, you all do well tonight. And what lawsuit? If he sue, all DA will do if put his name at the back of the pile. Even if is before judgment day, we’ll see if we can pay him by 25-cent installments.

He must have been paid before entering the country. It should have been part of his contract. Basically, he has nothing to lose so why is he forcing. But knowing Jamaicans, they full of pride. I was married to one I know. They can display attitudes of being wrong and strong and thinking they above the law. I call on immigration to expel from this country all Jamaicans known to be committing crimes and scamming Dominicans out of their money. They cannot earn the amount of money they earn here doing shows for a population of 60,000 and they come from a bigger population of 3,000,000.

I hope Tommy Sparta sues the organizers for every penny they own. With immediate effect all Jamaican and other Caribbean Artists should no longer perform in Dominica. Rosie must be turning in his grave, to see the manner his family is being treated by the Skeritt Labor Administration. I am not surprised at what is happening to the Douglas boys, remember the famous conversation Ian had with a gentleman over the telephone, “if you turn your back to get a glass of cold water, the man would say bad things about you.” Skeritt who is Minister of Police and Security might forgive, but he never forgets.

The are other Caribbean islands who have not only denied entry to some of these dancehall artists, some have been banned from entering period. “An airport that looking like a fowl cage?” Then be a good citizen and write to your government, do a signature drive, do something to get the government to build one like they have in Jamaica. Why is he being denied entry onto the island? If they were planning on doing that they should not have wasted the man’s time and money. He had to leave his homeland and come all the way over here. I am not a fan but I am yet to see why this is necessary. Don’t let the Shanique Myrie case repeat itself here.

But Dominicans know where Jamaica is. Just ask the many Dominicans who are studying in Jamaica or planning to move to Jamaica to study. Jae you’re an idiot….park urself!

    • Judge
      February 23, 2014

Besides an education, Jamaica has nothing to offer. Many people suffer in poverty. There are no jobs and Jamaicans generally have a bad reputation for scamming and committing all sorts of crimes wherever they go. They deport them often enough. The crime rate is so high. Some of the people have no regard for human life. They don’t want to be in Jamaica because of the misery that exists so why do we Dominicans want to be. I was there six months ago and I saw the struggle of my ex-husband’s family. I love my country and we shouldn’t let anyone come to corrupt it any further for us. From experience, I know they can be good for nothings and should be kept away from our innocent people here, especially our young people.

The man performed in Grenada last year was it, and the concert was good, you can youtube it. The problem however was that he was caught with marijuana in his possession at the airport while going through screening on his way home.
