‘Bumper’ weekend of activities for carnival lovers

Carnival lovers have been told to anticipate a ‘bumper’ weekend of activities.

Chairman of the Carnival Development Committee Alwyn Bully told a press conference Wednesday that there has been tremendous participation from patrons for all carnival events so far and they should expect some more great events before the climax on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

He said that one major event the “Big Truck Jam” which was scheduled for Sunday has been canceled since it clashed with other events. Kiddies Carnival will be held on that day as well as Carnival Bod La Mer on the Bayfront.

Bully urged persons and bands to have a zero tolerance policy for violence.

“Increased violence does not mean it is acceptable. We are asking bands to stop music if there is a fight. Allow the crowd to calm down… Cooperating with the police is going to be key,” Bully said.

Among major events coming up, on Friday Night the Dominica Festivals Committee will host the Miss Dominica Pageant while Saturday will see the finals of the Calypso Monarch. Both events will be staged at Carnival City.

According to Bully, Carnival begins at 4 a.m. on Monday with J’ouvert and ends at 10 p.m. on that night.

He noted that the time allotted for J’ouvert has been extended and will now take place from 4 a.m. -6 a.m. During that period there will be strictly Lapo Kabwit and steel pan music. Musical bands will run from then until 10 p.m.

This will be followed by the Parade of Traditional Costumes and from two o’clock the t-shirt bands will take to the streets.  Carnival Tuesday will begin at 10 a.m. and will end at 10 p.m., with ‘last lap’ beginning at 5 p.m.

Bully advised bands to wind down their music a few minutes before the end time in order not to leave patrons too hyped after the event has culminated. He said that when Carnival is ended abruptly patrons tend to gather in the streets and at their bus stops and sometimes end up in scuffles.

Tonight the Showdown Mas Camp will come to an end with the crowning of a Champ of The Camp. That event will be held at the Harlem Plaza.

People of dominica, you are blessed with natural beauty and the peace of God. Carnival is a time of celebrating and releasing the garbage of our human minds at least for the 3 days. Have fun with much peace and go home with thanks to God for freedom of Life.

Appreciate the plan of Alwin Bully, who wants to consider all Dominicans young and old.

Enjoy yourself this weekend. I write this from my apartment in Toronto. And my message of peace goes out especially to my people of Giraudel. Namely the Xavier families and their families.

This is funny, for Alwyn to be asking the band to wind down the music before the end of the end time. So what kind of music are they supposed to play? Jim Reeves?
