Jah Cure should be replaced as WCMF headliner – Cabral Douglas

Jah Cure spent 8 years in jail after being convicted of rape
Jah Cure spent 8 years in jail after being convicted of rape

Independent candidate for the Portsmouth constituency, Cabral Douglas, is making a case for Reggae star Jah Cure, one of the headline acts for the 18th edition of the World Creole Music Festival, to be replaced.

Douglas is arguing that Jah Cure whose real name is Siccature Alcock of Jamaica should not be among the acts for Dominica’s signature event as he was convicted in 1999 on two counts of rape, weapons possession and armed robbery and served 8 of his 15 year sentence in a Jamaican prison.

“It is indeed insensitive and a slap in the face quite frankly to all rape victims to provide a platform here in Dominica to a man who has been denied entry into most countries, who are serious about protecting their woman from convicted sexual predators,” Douglas opined.

“I would therefore like to call on first of all the Festivals Commission to review their decision, and find a more suitable artist and secondly, I would like to call on all interested parties to let their voices be heard,” he said.

He pointed out that the artist has been banned from the United States of America, United Kingdom and boycotted in Canada by women’s rights groups and is calling on advocates on behalf of the rights of women and the evangelical churches to speak out.

He said he is in solidarity with all women in Dominica, the Caribbean and the world who have suffered the “humilation, indignity and dehumanizing effects of rape”  and stated “I Cabral Douglas, would like to oppose the selection of a convicted rapist to headline our Annual World Creole Music Festival 2014.”

Douglas said the fact that it is a government sponsored event makes it all the more insulting and pointed out that one of the objectives of the WCMF was to promote Dominican music and culture.

“I therefore fail to see how inviting a foreign rapist to headline the World Creole Music Festival contributes to achieving that objective…”

Jah Cure has been in recent times popular with hit after hit namely true reflections album and the Universal cure however he has still firmly maintained his innocence.

Douglas is even going a step further and is questioning local music industry leaders such as Triple Kay Manager Emile Depooter who just last week was also in the media speaking about an alleged rapist on the loose trailing a family member of his.

“In his impassioned plea, he made several demands of the Police Department, the Court System, and the community at large to be extra vigilant in an effort to protect our young girls from sexual predators. I would therefore like to say to Emile – here is his chance to put his money where his mouth is,” Douglas said.

“Will you send your daughters to gyrate behind a convicted rapist just because there is a pay cheque in it for you at the end of it or will you refuse to allow (Triple Kay) on the same stage as a convicted rapist?” Douglas queried.

Attempts by Dominica News Online to contact DFC boss Colin Piper, Tourism Minister Ian Douglas and Emile Depooter have so far been unsuccessful.

I thought that the World Creole Music Festival was supposed to showcase our heritage of creole music. I cannot support a foreign reggae artist headlining my very own, until i see Midnight Groovers headlining Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica. Its time to get real support your own

We are so fake and false that it kills me sometimes. This same religious community was silent when Glenworth Emmanuel’s home was fire-bombed. They’re silent when murders walk free. They’re silent on all matters of reason, except homosexuality and selective morality. What a pack of bible-preaching hypocrites.
They Called Tommy the Demon and now they’re silent again on the convicted rapist.
    Lord help us.

Are you kidding and to exalt this man before a crowd? Do you organizers know what you are doing? This man will be residing in the best of hotels in Dominica and treated as if he is a king, an innocent person. He does not deserve this – not in Dominica.
Why bring the worst of lots to Dominica? You organizers are mad people. Do you not have basic common sense to invite and allow a convicted rapist to perform in Dominica? Has Dominica and some Dominicans as these organizers gone down the drain in class and dignity? Who in their right mind would want to listen to someone who was convicted of rape and was imprisoned for this crime? Can you not do better than that?
Has he said he is rehabilitated? So what that he spent some time in prison and paid the price. He has not yet paid the price of what he has done and by no means where God is concerned.
The saying, “What you do not know will not hurt.” Consider what you do know. I would not attend such a function if a man as he will be performing. He should not be allowed in Dominica. Keep him out! Find some other person who was not convicted and of rape. Also, not a drug addict.

I see what Mr. Douglas is aiming at with this, and from previous comments you all just proved him right! Mr. Douglas organised the Tommy Lee Sparta show which was denied after an uproar from religious groups and government officials further more arrested the artist on arrival, simply because the artist was claimed to be demon possessed and they claimed it would have had a negative impact on our society. That being said, it shows the level of hypocrisy on us Dominicans who are now crying down mr douglas remarks on Jah Cure whis IS a convicted rapist. If we are standing against immorality and consider ourselves a christian nation then we should NOT pick and choose artist we love and slander those we hate. They both have faults that affect us so NONE should perform in dominica. stop being hypocrites!

He can get all the bread he wants …. just not mine… and why? because I choose to give that bread to someone who does not have a history of raping women at gun point. And don’t give me any of that ”in the past’ goat manure! when he makes some personal atonement for his evil , I’ll start to listen. When he acknowledges the never ending nightmare he has inflicted on this woman .. I will rethink. . Yes the beam might be big in my eyes but be under no illusions.. rape aint no mole. And if we as a community are going to learn and grow from the incidents that saw two women killed , a female student raped .. a young child molested at the behest of her own family (lest we forget),LAST YEAR ALONE.. It includes taking a stance against people like Jah Cure , who for all his current status and lyrics have the responsibility to work towards the elimination of this scourge. and until then has no right to be headlining our major cultural event.

Jah Cure was innocent my brother. Did you not hear it in Morgan Heritage’s song “Tell me how come, Jah Cure there inna Jail and the prosecutor know he’s innocent and shouldn’t be there” Get Over your Tommy Lee issues and crawl back into the hole you was hiding all these years. Sex offenders can’t be rehabilitated….. They are predators and will always be that way…. The most that they are able to do is suppress their urges…. Rape is about control and not sex…… Being successful and talented doesn’t mean that you are not a rapist….. Studies show that many rapists are successful…. Intelligent men.

This story on DNO is as confusing as Cabral himself. Whereas the headline states, “Cure to be replaced”, the opening para states, “Cabral is making a case for ” not against] one of the headline act.
But what is Cabral really up to? Has he learnt anything from the unfortunate Tommy Lee saga or is Cabral just seeking public attention and sympathy as a result of a miserably failing, selfish, self-centered and fake alternative DLP candidature in the Portsmouth area?
Whereas Cabral is right that the criminal acts for which the artist was convicted ought not be glorified, which is not the case here nor is the music of the artist glorifying rape and violence as that of Tommy Lee glorification of the devil, the more important point here is one highlighted by a contributor below (Chalk and Cheese) that the artist is a rehabilitated offender who has gone on to be extremely successful and very productive in society compared to a “repeated offender, nut-job, represented by Cabral -who to date cannot seem to or does not appear to want to control himself”
Cabral seems to be exercising bad judgment in picking his battles, which is not a good sign for a political candidate.

    Respectfully

So wait…u mean to tell me that Dominica is so backwards that you all need to bring down a Jamaican rapist to headline your own music festival???You mean you all cannot even produce a single Dominican who can pull a crowd to headline your flagship event??? Are you all so desperate to pull a crowd that you need to bring in someone who can not even travel to the US, UK or Canada??? It no wonder that Dominica is recognised as the poorest and most backwards country in the OECS…

Besides Triple Kay, Midnight Groovers, and Ecstasy none of which are headline acts, there is not one other Dominican act performing at the (WCMF) which is a three day CREOLE festival??? Just about all of the performs are foreigners. In other countries like they invite foreigners to make special guest appearances, but since Dominica is so backwards you all invite all foreigners and have your own just there in the background, which is a sad state of affairs for Dominica….Not only are you dependant of foreigners to draw a crown, but you have resorted to foreign reject like Jah Cure, who will never get a visa to travel to the US, UK or Canada…

That looks like a payback for refusing uncle demon in the country; in as much that he wants the Government to take a stance, I pray that he encourages them too to create a public website attached to the police department that all sex offenders/paedophile must register as part of the constitution/law once they are charged and that their pictures are made public so all are aware of who they are. THAT I BELIEVE IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Let us start cleaning our backyard, our country making full awareness of these issues and then we can try to clean up someone else’s

Also, besides, this is not his first time performing, so Cabral everybody is going to look at it that you are just trying to find justification in what they did when they refuse entry for your uncle demon artist.

Let me state here I was a victim of attempted rape as a minor and it’s the most traumatic experience, so I can’t even wrap my mind around what those who have had to endure the brunt of it are going through. All rapists should be castrated, they are unfit for society… however even I know if as a teenager me and my teenage man get caught having sex, and my law enforcement father demand he serves time I can’t exactly call it rape, can I? yes he was told to stay away from me, but what we felt was bigger than parental rule!!

Conpeh Cabaral you have a serious issue of confusion. If Jah Cure is a convicted rapist and shouldn’t play in Dominica because suddenly Dominican women are of great importance to you, then how is that you are leading the charge for Uncle Demon aka Tommy Lee Sparta, nee Leroy Russell to sue Dominica’s government and by extension it’s people who include women? Oh once you don’t serve time for a criminal act against UNDERAGE MINORS IN UNIFORM because in depraved neighbourhoods it’s almost a ritual to pick them up and serve them to the beast it’s not a crime? You are a hypocrite, attention seeker and only using Jah Cure as a scapegoat to get your name out in the press again. You are sick, and using such a hurtful experience for your own selfish gain. You are still not going to win that seat because all your issues are self-serving and desperate.

What Jah Cure did almost 2 decades ago was a despicable act against a woman. From what I can recall of the case he met a girl on the streets and they struck up a conversation. During the conversation she agreed to visit him at his house later that night. When she arrived at his house they engaged in consensual sex. After they were through, he called over his friends, who were also present at the time he met the girl, and they raped her.

No good man would commit such a crime against a woman. The fact that he called over his friends suggested that the act was premeditated. He was convicted and sentence to 15 years but was released on parole after 8 years. I can recall too that his first couple of parole applications were denied because he continued to maintain his innocence. He was of the opinion that he did not rape her, his friends did, therefore he was innocent. Wrong!!!!! He eventually admitted that he was wrong and apologized to the victim.

I believe many in the music industry and else where has long since forgiven him because he has had much success in his career since his release. He has also gotten married and had a beautiful baby girl. I can’t in good conscience though say that everyone else should forgive and forget because it is a very sensitive issue that might hit home closer for some people than others. While he is enjoying a great life I am pretty certain that the victim is still haunted by the experience.

Do I think he is a sexual predator, absolutely not. What I would love for the Dominican government to do is to decide early whether or not they are going to grant him entry in the country and let the promoters of the event know so that they can act accordingly. It would be sad to see him get turned away at the airport.

Also, Cabral, are you not aware that there are convicted rapist who are Dominican and who perform and sing right here in Dominica? What say you then? There have been days dedicated to the observance of issues affecting women, Cabral – you know I never once hear from you? DNO has had articles/court bulletins related to that topic – silence. Why now? Is this your moment to “get back” at folks because you do not come across as genuine.

I am by no means poo-pooing domestic violence or abuse of women. I want tougher laws and better awareness of the ills of abuse. But Cabral, don’t use this topic in the hopes of scoring political points. Get out there! Work and speak out the plight of your community. Peace

But for real I want to hear the Evangelicals on this one because like Tommy Lee, Jah Cure is also a Satanist and now, wow, a Rapist. Madam Speaker what are your views on this one, and, UWP and DLP its election season so tell us your views too…

Well, I have a problem with him coming also but its for the reason he spoilt Dominica’s name..The last time he performed here at the WCMF he accused Dominicans of stealing his ROLEX watch. Let’s wait to see if his chain goes missing this time…supposedly….

I certainly do not suppourt Cabral with his nonsense because like most people here in this forum I beleive persons should be given second chances. However that being said, no one seems to be remembering that the last time Jah Cure was here He in his infinite wisdom decided to acuse Dominicans employed at Fort Young of stealing his Rolex watch. Please stupes I personally for no other reason but that would not bring this clown back to Dominica. It is a despicable slap in the face to all hard working employees at fort young for us to bring him back here…….NO TO JAH CURE!!!!!!

I won’t hold a man’s past against his today , however my objection is based on his poor performance on the stage last time he played at WCMF and secondly his later painting my competent staff at fort young as thieves for what he claimed he lost which he never had . Apology first and then consideration for 2015 .

Sir, where is your voice with all the drugs and killing in Portsmouth? Matter fact Dominica as a whole?

This happened since 1999 though… a good 15 yrs ago… What happened to giving people a second chance? it’s nonsense like this that holds people back. The man has probably changed for the better married and just wants to move on.

However, I do agree with the changing him…because no one likes him anymore

the convicted crime was alleged, and was never properly proven. read the facts surrounding the case. there is a reason why he never did his full time.

Cabral just want to appear to be relevant in the eyes of the public.

The man has served his penalty Cabral. What do you want again? Don’t you believe people change and deserve a second chance? Hasn’t he performed in Dominica prior to this WCMF?

Totally ridiculous statement the man served his time and changed his life which in itself is a story of inspiration to persons who are imprisoned or in situations that lead to crime. Has the man been conicted of similar offences since his release from jail? By your standard best criminals jus stay in jail wi wen they tell them time up #stoneheart #theyknownotlove

YA carbal has a point– BUT i suspect its payback for refusing TLS from performing couple months ago. AND my view on JAH CURE is that he should not be allowed to perform because of the accusation he made on the certain hotel where he was a guest after his last wcmf performance. made DOMINICANS felt ashamed. REPLACE him with NASIO. STOP PRESSING NASIO DOWN instead of promoting a convicted rapist. yes i said CONVICTED because thats what he was found guilty of. WE NA WANT MR IN OUR FETE.

    • CIA on the Watch
      July 16, 2014

Its Funny how so many Dominicans are suffering from memory loss, this is a man who after his performance last year almost place a dent in DA tourism arrival because of his wild accusation of stolen watch

    • immigration
      July 16, 2014

BRING NASIO FOUNTAINE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at least we know that Jah Cure is a “rapist” how about those who go around and play under all little girls skirts and no one reports it? and eve when it is reported no one goes to jail for it. This issue is a big one, but lets not speak out of our ears, eyes and asses but rather have a healthy discussuion that can benefit all especially our young ladies. BRING NASIO FONTAINE PLEASE!!!!!

    • Hero Worship
      July 17, 2014

I just don’t understand why Nasio isn’t part of the line-up. Last time Nasio performed in WCMF, I had a great great time.

Oh please Cabral. How do you compare a rehabilitated offender who has gone on to be extremely successful and very productive in society to a repeat offending nut-job who cannot seem to or does not appear to want to control himself?

Yes Jah Cure has been convicted of these indiscretions but who has not made mistakes as a youth. Some of us have gone too far and I will admit that Jah Cure was a bit extreme but he has moved on from that, married a very beautiful young lady, started a family and has been very instrumental in the upliftment of society. Can you really compare that man’s life to Shabba? A man who for over a decade has terrorized females all over the country, has been involved in all sorts of other illegal activities and is absolutely un-remorseful for his actions?

If you can consider equating these 2 individuals then your mind as well needs evaluation.
