Registration is now open for carnival bands as Real Mas’ 2012 has been launched.
The Bouyon/Fanatik Show on February 11 is among new additions to the carnival celebration, Events Director of the Dominica Festivals Committee, Natalie Clarke-Meade, announced at the launching ceremony for carnival at Fort Young Hotel on Thursday.
The Sensay Festival on February 8, Miss Dominica Pageant on February 17, Teenage Pageant on February 12, and Calypso competitions are the other activities.
Mini Carnival Borde La Mer is set for Sunday February 19. J’ouvert will run from 4 am to 10 am, followed by the T-Shirt Band street jump-up on Monday February 20; the costume band parade is set for February 21.
The Teway Vaval celebration will conclude Carnival 2012 on February 22.
Clarke-Meade pointed out that adjustments could be made to the carnival schedule. “But we pray that there will not be too many,” she said.
Hi, Miss Clarke-Meade I read your article buit I did not see anything honoring Mr Joseph. He was a very well known entertainer and I think we should name this year festival in his honor. Anyway I am coming to Dominica for the carnival and I hope to have a good time. Also I would love to play mass with a Tee Shirt Band and a Costume Band but I have not seen any advertisement on DNO. I need names and contact numbers to make plans.(Love from NYC).
Tshirt band should really be on tuesday.. i experienced carnival for the first time last year and though i had a wonderful time, it would have been better if tshirt band was on tuesday and the costume parade on monday afternoon, i was toooo tired to take my kids to costume parade on tuesday…

HERE WE GO AGAIN bouyon/fanatik show . We must have at least the basic respect for Dominicans intelligence. I dont wish to be destructively critical but there is a local band named FANATIK and its founder/leader happens to be one of the creators of Bouyon music. What signal are we sending bt namimg such a so called innovative event after a known band ? Oh yes the usual bragg AN OVER SIGHT. I DONT AGREE AT ALL !

I believe that the DFC have lost its way and a separate committee is needed to run carnival. SO mucf of our time, effort and tak payers money is being spent on the important WCMF and our carnival is suffering. Its no wonder that the DFC is secretly pushing for a change in carnival date to give them more time to plan for carnival. I dont care what people say but carnival is of much greater significance and cultural scope than any WCMF and hence it is in dire need of greater attention. I wander whether everyone in the DFC will be spending their time in DA for the carnival celebrations ? WE WILL BE WATCHING…..So there are so many reasons why some people may just have other interests in CHANGING THE STATUSQUO.
The DFC cannot tell us what they have done with all of those recommendations that have been submitted over the years for POST MORTEM of carnival. However some so called CULTURAL ICONS ( MY FOOT ) really want to get a taste of the TRINI MASS ( which is now cpot cat of the nakedness of BRAZIL ).
So thats my piece for the time being. I think that we have to return to the vintage cultural experssions found in our traditional mass. The NATIONAL CARNIVAL PARADE is basically flawed in so many ways. The gaps persist every year. Its not representative of EVERY area. I think that at least two bands from very rural district shoule be on parade; in addition to what we are accustomed of having. The floats are not decently decorated and some of the pageant contestants seemed lost and are not shown proper respect. There is a clear lack of serious PRIVATE-PUBLIC SECTOR COLLABORATION. And the MEDIA coverage is substandard–bad English is the order of the day; while the world is listening ! More time needs to be spent on the DAME MARY EUGENIA CHARLES BOULEVARD during the parade. This will enhance a much better VIDEO DOCUMENTATION and Coverage IMAGERY of the parade. Roseau needs a face lift ( I HOPE YOU GOT THE PICTURE ).

This tear was BUNJI GARLIN I guess next year it will be another Trini. Who dont the DFC get some serious human resource to be involved in some workshop in custume building and pan playing/tuning/making in Dominica…thet would be money spent. Why cannot the DFC enter into some partnership with the authorities in Trinidad so that we can have in Trinidad a BOUYON CADENCE INVASION in collaboration with the SOCA people. That will be a big way to push our culture and promote our BOUYON/CADENCE and the WCMF.

will somebody breathe some sense into these people and put costume bands on Monday and T-Shirt on Tuesday. i think it has been tried and proven that it does not make practical sense. If they have J’ouvert till 10.00 why can’t costumes bands be from 1.00pm. enough of this nonsense already.
